Hi everyone,
I’m looking for the name of the other type of drip, not with glucose, the sugar free version of a drip, for a friend who needs to know asap
I read it a few days ago and now I can’t find it in my browser history. I can’t find it with google either and this is not the first time I have searched for it. I should have bookmarked that link! I have a feeling it was in a comment to some article or video, I can’t recall it now. I’ve browsed through a couple of days of web history. Please help if you can. Thank you!
What is the name of the sugar free drip (hospital)? Asap
Anything with D5 or D10 in the name has sugar, anything without it is fine. So NS (normal saline), or LR (lactated ringers) doesn’t have it. D5 is 5% dextrose, so 50 grams in a 1000 cc bag.
That is really handy to know, thanks for info (not that I have any intention on needing one, lol).
Have you tried to Keto ..while in Hospital?
Never even considered this. I really appreciate the question.
Next time I’m under the knife I know what to ask!
I made a specific request prior to surgery that I never be given a glucose drip, only saline . They wanted me to switch to glucose when I refused to eat, but my doc backed me up and said fasting was an excellent idea to take digestion off my body’s list of things to do so I could focus instead on healing. Every time my IV bag was replaced I clarified with the nurse. Just saline? Good. No glucose for this girl.
There can be fat and protein, but not usually unless you’re malnourished.
Any reason there couldn’t be a “ketone drip”? I wonder if anyone is working on that…
I can’t get it out of my head that coma patients (TBI or otherwise) might be better served with ketone feeding rather than glucose.
Incidentally, all this “lactated ringers” talk has given me a flashback to my childhood and watching ‘Emergency!’ reruns. I’ve got “D5W TKO” permanently engraved on my memory because of that show. lol
Dang, I luv this commnity… I am having surgery in a few weeks - this info is awesome to know!!
I highly recommend fasting after surgery especially if you are taking narcotic pain meds which notoriously cause constipation. I had broth and sugar free jello in the hospital for a few days. (It keeps nurse off your back to eat.) good luck! Remember pain free rest is the best medicine!
So I had a case mgr call me today to talk to me about some post surgery concerns, basically asking if I had any…so I brought up the fact that I dont want a glucose IV drip & she said to speak the nurse about that next week when I have my presurgery testing etc, but that as far as she knew, the doctors only give glucose drip IV’s cuz I will need energy. Not sure Im going to be able to get around that, or if I should even push the issue. I will def bring it up next week to the nurse. Thoughts? Any advice?
So sorry I just now saw this!
You simply say that you do not want glucose only saline drip. It’s your body and you are on a no sugar journey. There is no reason for them to deny this. Tell them you’d be glad to drink broth for energy. No one ever questioned my decision to have saline vs glucose. Your body, your choice! Hope it goes well. Keep me posted?
I actually just had my presurg’ consult and did just that - told them I do not want a glucose drip and they said no prob but to make sure I tell the surgeon so he orders the saline drip post surgery & during surgery they will give me the LR drip.
You could also write “no glucose-saline only” in sharpie marker near your IV site!
Hope your surgery goes well. They always want me to drink juice and eat crackers before being released. I tell them I’ll drink water and broth and eat sugar free jello and they are usually fine with that. You know your body will do fine without eating. Gives the body more energy for healing.
How does not eating give the body more energy for healing? (genuinely interested)
According to my surgeon if the body doesn’t have to bother with digestion it has more energy left over for healing
