Ketogenic Diet and Hospital stays

Did you try to Keto during your hospital stay ?
How did it go ? Did you stay in Ketosis ?

I guess one option is to fast !
Another might be to just don’t eat the carbs.
Get your BFF to smuggle you in some fat and protein.

lame.

Any experiences ?

I found 3 “hospital experience” threads.

All are great !

(1) Glucose intravenous drips (say no to them).

(2) Hospital stay last week - food choices were terrifying

(3) Staying in a hospital

Bear Owsley maintained zero carb while in jail by trading with inmates and eventually getting assigned to working the kitchen. Obviously you won’t be in a hospital long enough to get a job there, but getting friendly with the staff wouldn’t hurt.

The Jail / Hospital analogy has alot of truth. :bacon:

This is what scares me about going to hospital in Feb to have my second child. A diabetic (non keto) friend of mine ended up on insulin during a hospital stay for a broken hip. She had always been able to control her diabetes fairly ok (as much as you can on the low fat high carb standard Australian diet). I looked at the ingredients on the front of the package of one of her meals and said no wonder - the second ingredient after water in a sauce covering the meat she was eating, was sugar. The tea ladies were also bringing around biscuits which they said we’re for diabetics (they were the see sugar laden ones I had when I was in hospital with my first child). She was on insulin the entire time and when she got home her sugars were back to her normal and she no longer needed the insulin!

Edit. Found this tonight and has some great tips for food.

Was in the hospital a month ago for 1 week on IV antibiotics for a serious wound. Here is how I managed:

-First, you must get the doctor to write up your menu as “regular” or whatever your hospital uses to denote it’s not a restricted diet, and the patient can choose whatever they want. This is vital. I told my Dr I was on the “anti-cancer ketogenic diet”. He said Hmmmmmm… we really don’t have that one on the list. But I convinced him I was competent to make the choices, so he wrote it up as “regular” and let me fill out the daily menu choices.

-Second, fasting is not very effective if you are in for very long. They get worried and will try to intervene. They “charted” everything I ate and drank, or did not eat. Found out the first day that to say “I’m just not hungry” was to cause problems (I just skipped lunch totally, which sent them into fits). They interpreted that to mean I was worse! I didn’t eat a whole ton of stuff after that, but enough to keep them off my back. And some places will not even discharge you unless they are sure the whole digestion system is working right (both in and out, ya know?).

-Third, I was totally PICKY. I ordered things like a protein, hold the carbs (croutons, buns, bread, etc). I ordered extra mayo packets, or butter or or 4 (yes four) half n halfs for my coffee. I did manage to sneak in a little container of pink himalayan salt that I was liberal with at all meals. I’d order a “real” egg omelette, hold the fries/hash browns, and order a side of sausage. All in all, I was just picky, and refused the sugar/starchy stuff. And always asked for a lemon wedge, that I put into ice water. Oh, and I’d order the “cheeseburger” sans bun, and ask for mustard and extra mayo. I always had to repeat it, since they weren’t sure they had heard right. I always chose the simple stuff, without sauces and breading.

-I drank coffee with lots of half n half; herbal tea with my stevia; lots and lots of water with lemon wedge; and for nausea did drink diet ginger ale. Yes, not the best. But infinitely better than another drug pumped into me.

-Be willing to eat mostly the same things, in case your hospital has limited choices. It’s only for a short time, no biggee. Never had a need for friends to sneak in stuff. I will admit, though, not all hospitals have as good of choices as this one had.

Hope that gives some ideas.

This is a good strategy. I was staying with my son while he recovered from surgery the other day and I was doing a 96hr fast so I didn’t eat anything. However I was ordering for him since he’s only 4 and I did note that there was plenty on there that I could eat if I chose to. You will want to bring salt as @rettakat noted because I don’t think I ever saw any (and i was looking for some, had to go to cafeteria and steal it like an addict). I do remember seeing real butter though, however I’m sure HWC wouldn’t be there.
