What irritates the f&*% out of me about keto

(April Harkness) #1

One of the things that irritates me about keto becoming popular are all the keto products that are not needed and won’t work. Then people trying these products will blame KETO.

. A few years ago one of my friends (overweight but jumped onboard the mlm train )was selling body wraps for weight loss from a company called - It Works. https://iwbodywraps.com/ Did she lose some weight. Yup…but I guarantee not from those wraps. And she put it back on anyways and then some. She tried to sell me some wraps.and I told her point blank “It’s a scam”. She unfriended me on fb for a while when I called her out on it. Fastforward to now. I go past a booth at the farmers market. I see a distributor selling IT works…but this time instead of wraps they are plastering KETO on their products.
https://iwbodywraps.com/it-works-products/

UGh.
No.

Just cut your carbs. No extra BS NEEDED. NONE. NONE.

What got me irritated today? Instagram. Today I posted this on my IG- https://www.instagram.com/p/B39as9jAa_6/

And someone asked me "What program is that?

NOt a PROGRAM. I am carnivore. OMAD. I just leave out carbs and sugar. I put meat and eggs on my plate. DONE. I don’t overthink. I don’t even try to hit certain macros. I do track but it’s because like my lipid idol- Dave Feldman - I like to have DATA. Whatever my macros end up being on my plate is what the macros are. I don’t even log till I am done eating. Let them darn macros fall where they MAY!

And I use something called common sense to know that if i don’t put carbs on my plate, I’m GOOD TO GO! I like to KEEP IT SIMPLE! I know which meals are now best for max lift day for oly lifting , which make me a bit energetic in the gym for kettlebells, Which meals are fine for light lifting technique day. Which meals I need to tweak, etc. . I like having this data. so far my best combo for max day is - ground beef with pork belly, two pieces of salmon, two sausages, one duck egg. Without tracking I would not have known. Now that goes on my goto list before each max day. So yes, I track but my meal plan?

My meal plan/ program is called - “April puts whatever has no crazy carbs on her plate”

I can sell it to you for $99 along with some keto cheese wraps you can wrap around your belly for added weight loss.

Just kidding.

And yesterday someone tried to market more product to me. I mean… the kind of people that want to sell meal plans? Have they looked at my damn PICTURE? I see so many people on IG and facebook saying they are nutrition/fitness coaches and yet I only show them posting food pics. I want to see WHAT THEY look like. Not just their food. I want to see what their fitness routine is. Some people say I am a narcissist because I post so much on IG and youtube. But I sincerely like helping people for free. Keto changed my life so much I want to share. I want to shout it from the rooftops. The vegans, plant based people are extremely vocal. And WE need to be just as vocal. So yes, that’s why I put it all out on IG . That’s why I post on youtube.

(although yeah, I am an affiliate for select savory seasonings now…lol. But that’s because I like to cook.I am not ABOUT to shill a meal plan or have people pay for a workout program.)

Ok…back to work and not being angry about people who don’t even post their picture nor themselves training , wanting to sell me “their meal plan” to help me. If you aren’t an olympic lifter or into kettlebell sport- ain’t interested. Try to improve on this -

Are you selling “April’s way?” :joy:
A little humor

Ya girl I feel ya.

One of the many reasons I avoid social media completely: mass stupidity.

I wrote a blog post somewhat related to this earlier this month.

Bottom line: You can’t “supplement” your way to fitness or weight loss (or ketosis).

It depends so much more on what you subtract than what you add. I added healthy food for breakfast but it didn’t matter because lunch, dinner, and snacks were enough to maintain my body fat. The only way I was able to move my body fat down while not feeling hungry was to subtract sugar and starch.

(April Harkness) #5

Just read it. Perfect. encapsulates what I was trying to say without all my obscenities.

(Bob M) #6

Ted Naiman isn’t an Olympic lifter or kettle bell sport participant. Shawn Baker does kettle bells, but I don’t think he obsesses about it. Are you saying you would not consider their advice?

Also, not everyone can do those things. I have a repaired completely torn supraspinatus, and one completely torn supraspinatus in my other shoulder. I’ve tried to do kettle bells, but they put stress on my shoulders. Consequently, I’ve gone mainly to body weight training, a la Ted Naiman, with some HIIT thrown in.

Erm… @ctviggen she was referring to folks selling a “meal plan” by that comment.

(Steaks b4 cakes! 🥩🥂) #8

This reminds me of that one time I bought some of those It Works wraps…:speak_no_evil::hear_no_evil::speak_no_evil:

(April Harkness) #9

Exactly what Blue Violet said. @ctviggen I love Naiman and Baker but the typical “Here is my meal plan” people on IG and even on youtube…those people irritate me. Naiman and BAker are in a completely different class. I also love following Danny Vega, Goodybeats, William Shewfelt.etc. And yes some of them sell supps (i won’t buy them unless it’s an awesome cookbook, but not into meal plans as I like my own food) and I have a coach for my own training so no fitness books needed) but I take what can from many of the above and work it into my own way of eating and fitness. I won’t be following advice from some random IG chic or guy who doesn’t even show the work they do in the gym and how their way of eating benefits their training.

(April Harkness) #10

btw…shawn baker might USE kettlebells. HE isn’t a competitive kettlebell lifter. Just got to set the record straight. no disrespect to BAker…he looks awesome Using a tool versus competing is why I am obsessed and NOTHING Wrong with that. I am obsessed. You better believe that. but pleaes don’t confuse people who are into using these tools to get fit and just look awesome with competitiors. i.e. oly lifters are different than bodybuilders vs powerlifters vs rowers vs kettlebell sport COMPETITORS vs the average gym goer who just wants to be healthy. I am going off on a tangent but its triggering when someone says i am obsessive. Yes. as a competitor you HAVE TO BE. I won’t take barbell advice from someone who just lifts for aesthetics. We might use the same tool (barbell) but for a COMPLETELY different purpose. that person will be obsessed with the “look” obtained from lifting the barbel, I will be obsessed with getting on the platform to lift that barbell. there is a HUGE difference. off my soapbox now. But yes, I would totally take advice about carnivore woe from Baker and implement it in my own way , but I would NOT NEVER take kettlebell sport advice from him. No matter how great he is at carnivore. He uses it. he doesn’t COMPETE with it. Back to people selling keto meal plans who need to actually stop trying to shil their stuff to people like me.

I love this!! =)).

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

Oooh! Where do I sign up? Do you take PayPal?

Darn!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yeah, but they’re half the fun (you can always blur them!)

P.S.–Dr. Baker has the best butt! Just saying . . . (sigh)

(PJ) #13

I think it’s great. You gotta be.

(Marianne) #14

You know, why not? Better than some of this other shit out there. If she can make some money off of it, God bless.

(PJ) #15

I should repackage Fung’s message in the joke I used to make –

The Cinnamon Toothpick Diet

#16

I like this approach.

Great rant April.

(Jane) #17

I agree that I hate all the KETO products Big Food (or others trying to capitalize on) that are nowhere near keto. Do they think we are stupid and can’t read labels? Apparently so!

I believe the big anti-keto campaigns are driven by the fact that they can’t make money when we are fasting, buying real food and getting healthier. The NERVE of us!!! How DARE we erode their profits!!!

#18

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! :joy:

#19

Well said, those MLMs are such BS, always! As for keto body wraps, I want to just wrap myself in bacon. When I’m done I can eat it and leave no waste. Good for my body, good for the environment.

Oh @NinMD that’s BRILLIANT! :rofl::raised_hands::trophy:
