What if Keto Just Doesn't Work for Everyone?

#63

Good Lord, your English is soooo much better than my French!

It’s possible to do this and still be keto - at least to some degree. I’m doing something similar though I monitor my blood sugar and breath ketones and adjust quantities of my main carb sources such as fruits, nuts and dairy to keep blood sugar stable and avoid them when my ketones are low. I typically average 40-50 g net carbs daily, quite a bit less restrictive than the standard suggested approach to keto.

Reading this , I gave a big sigh…“at least I’m not the only one”. I’m not ready to give up and will switch it up, but as hard core as I have been going for so long on this Keto journey, I know it should be making more of a difference. Reading all the success stories were making me even more disappointed in my own failures. This is at least a little comfort, knowing I am not the only one, so thanks.

But it’s not your failure! Look at it this way: if your doctor had prescribed a drug, and you took it exactly as prescribed, and it didn’t work, would you blame yourself? Of course not! You’d try a different drug, to see if it worked instead. The fact that your body didn’t respond to treament as expected is hardly your fault.

Some people do very well on a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. Perhaps you are one of those people. In any case, you just need to find a way of eating that your body will respond to.

Thank you! I edited the message like 8 times when I saw something was not well said etc…Ha!Ha! Merci, ça me fait plaisir de voir que je peux être bien comprise! Meaning it makes me happy to be understood and no too bad!

That’s great! I saw a man on a podcast talking about a “mofified keto diet”…DR. Brett Osborne. The podcast is: “Ketosis Doesn’t Matter - Keto Discussion with Dr. O - James Grage Theory #30” I tought “Hey that sounds kinda like what i’m doing!”
I don’t want to measure everything and feel stressed about it anymore, no more ketones checking and counting the content of my food…I feel more free! But I don’t know what way is THE way! A lot of reading, listening and trying on my part! Of course it helps and make it easier for me because i’m not sick. I am very impressed with all the people with sickness doing everything they can to make food their medicine! Hats off to all!

But don’t expect me to discuss nutritional science in French. I have a hard enough time figuring it out in English!

I agree with you. As much as we would like to follow the recipe and get the results, unfortunately it doesn’t always work that way. I think the solution will always be different for each person, and the quest for finding it can be long and frustrating. I too, shall continue the quest!

I scrolled quickly through the responses, so forgive me if this has been mentioned already. I am in the same boat as you… strict keto is good for maintaining for me, but to lose weight I had to do some extended fasts. Recently I began to be super unmotivated to do much fasting and was watching my weight creep up (even when being in great ketosis, exercising, low stress, good sleep). About a week ago i happened to listen to Daisy on Keto woman podcast interview with Georgia Ede who talked exactly about this issue with some women. She started having better results with carnivore/zero carb she feels due to some undiscovered food sensitivities. I went “down the rabbit hole” and then heard and read interviews and stories about Kelly Williams Hogan and Amber O’Hearn on carnivore diet. Also Dr. Ken Berry has a couple youtubes on carnivore. So… I have been zero carb for 1 week now. Feels amazing, better than the best euphoric fasting days. No more joint pain, no migraines, no hunger. I think I must have had some foods that were causing lots of inflammation. Still in ketosis, but lower levels. And started losing weight again 2 or 3 lbs this week, even with eating quite a bit. I think you should look into it.

First of all, thank you for your post! This is something that I have been wondering about myself. I have been following keto for the last year or so and I can’t say that I have really noticed much of a change in the area of weight loss per se. My weight has remained within the same 5 pounds. However, I have lost body fat but not in a way that is clearly visible to the naked eye. I know this from periodically doing the water tank body fat test. I have been frustrated with how things have been going several times and have consequently adjusted how I have been doing things, making little tweaks here and there to find out what works and doesn’t. In the end, after not seeing much change, I have decided that I am going to continue with the Keto WOE and focus more on the building of muscle less on chasing the scale. I am also not a person that necessarily needs to lose weight - I am not overweight but would just like to lose maybe 10 pounds. I am aware that if I focus more on muscle building that I could even show more weight gain on the scale!

Does Keto work for me? I don’t know, but I have had seen a change in my energy levels and exercise performance - for the better. So I must be doing something correct, right?

(taunya ruffin) #75

i am happy to read this because i feel like i am doing something wrong. I have at least 20 pounds to lose and i have been in Ketosis for 2 months with zero weight loss. Frustrating.
I am a researcher so i have tried all the things suggested- I think! I am NOT responding. What can i do? Carbs are at 20 and protein is correct.
i actually think i have more cellulite on my legs now. MAYDAY!!

(taunya ruffin) #76

also, does anyone know a specialist for Keto in Texas? Austin would be super. Maybe a nutritionist could help or a Keto doctor. Searching for answers.

#77

I’m in austin too and searching for the same thing! I’ve been looking for one since i moved here 2 years ago. I have an appointment with a functional medicine dr that seems pretty keto friendly, but it;s in october, first they had available, if it works out i’ll let you know :grinning:

#78

I haven’t read the entire thread, but how much over weight are you?

#79

The 20 pounds could be your bodies set point. Fast for 3 days. If you lose nothing at all, you’re a 1 in a trillion.

#80

Andrea, if I didn’t know you wrote this post I would’ve thought I did :joy: . I’m in the exact same boat as you, down to the body fat percentage, and the lean mass hyper responder without the leanness (well, except for your super low insulin). The only way I can make the scale move is by extended fasting, but then it will slowly creep back up until I am on the same weight i started, every time. It’s so frustrating. I also don’t experience the high energy phase while fasting that people always talk about, my longest fast was 7 days, and I felt horrible all the way through. Does the same happen to you too?

I tried the 1 meal a week carb up, with healthy carbs like sweet potatoes, butternut squash, maybe some regular potatos, lentils, etc, and it didn’t work for me, but who knows, maybe it will for you so let us know. Also the carb ups don’t make me feel like crap either, but they didn’t help with weight loss.

I’ve read many of your posts and I think we are also around the same age, I’m 35. The only time I managed to get to the weight I wanted was in my early twenties by severely restricting calories, but that only lasted a couple of years before I put it all back on, and probably also wrecked my metabolism in the process.

Basically I have nothing to offer to help you, I just wanted you to know you are not alone :muscle:t3:

(KCKO, KCFO) #81

There is a thread for finding drs. near you, several areas are covered even some international ones in there, See if anyone is near you. There is a major low carb conference that happens yearly in Austin, so there are probably at least a couple of them in Austin.

(What The Fast?!) #82

Yes - I experience the same thing.

I’ve done a lot of fasting, but it’s always come back right away. It also made my period completely disappear.

This is so interesting to me. It’s almost like…for those who felt like crap before keto and for whom keto has made a huge impact on their weight, having a carb up is disastrous. For those who felt fine before keto and for whom keto hasn’t caused weight loss, the carb ups don’t hurt. I did a carb up last night and I felt FREAKING FANTASTIC. My boyfriend even said “I like you better with carbs, you’re more yourself.” I had so much energy.

I went and did a HiiT bike ride this morning and will be lifting this afternoon.
