What if Keto Just Doesn't Work for Everyone?

(taunya ruffin) #76

also, does anyone know a specialist for Keto in Texas? Austin would be super. Maybe a nutritionist could help or a Keto doctor. Searching for answers.

#77

I’m in austin too and searching for the same thing! I’ve been looking for one since i moved here 2 years ago. I have an appointment with a functional medicine dr that seems pretty keto friendly, but it;s in october, first they had available, if it works out i’ll let you know :grinning:

I haven’t read the entire thread, but how much over weight are you?

#79

The 20 pounds could be your bodies set point. Fast for 3 days. If you lose nothing at all, you’re a 1 in a trillion.

Andrea, if I didn’t know you wrote this post I would’ve thought I did :joy: . I’m in the exact same boat as you, down to the body fat percentage, and the lean mass hyper responder without the leanness (well, except for your super low insulin). The only way I can make the scale move is by extended fasting, but then it will slowly creep back up until I am on the same weight i started, every time. It’s so frustrating. I also don’t experience the high energy phase while fasting that people always talk about, my longest fast was 7 days, and I felt horrible all the way through. Does the same happen to you too?

I tried the 1 meal a week carb up, with healthy carbs like sweet potatoes, butternut squash, maybe some regular potatos, lentils, etc, and it didn’t work for me, but who knows, maybe it will for you so let us know. Also the carb ups don’t make me feel like crap either, but they didn’t help with weight loss.

I’ve read many of your posts and I think we are also around the same age, I’m 35. The only time I managed to get to the weight I wanted was in my early twenties by severely restricting calories, but that only lasted a couple of years before I put it all back on, and probably also wrecked my metabolism in the process.

Basically I have nothing to offer to help you, I just wanted you to know you are not alone :muscle:t3:

There is a thread for finding drs. near you, several areas are covered even some international ones in there, See if anyone is near you. There is a major low carb conference that happens yearly in Austin, so there are probably at least a couple of them in Austin.

(What The Fast?!) #82

Yes - I experience the same thing.

I’ve done a lot of fasting, but it’s always come back right away. It also made my period completely disappear.

This is so interesting to me. It’s almost like…for those who felt like crap before keto and for whom keto has made a huge impact on their weight, having a carb up is disastrous. For those who felt fine before keto and for whom keto hasn’t caused weight loss, the carb ups don’t hurt. I did a carb up last night and I felt FREAKING FANTASTIC. My boyfriend even said “I like you better with carbs, you’re more yourself.” I had so much energy.

I went and did a HiiT bike ride this morning and will be lifting this afternoon.

My honest opinion is, is you’re not losing weight because you don’t need to lose any. Everyone gets pockets of fat in places they’d rather not have them, and many result to surgery to shift it if they can’t live with it. You sound like you have the perfect metabolism. No need to ruin it

(What The Fast?!) #84

@Wishbone I mean, I’m 5’ 2” and weigh 148-153lbs. I EASILY have 20 lbs to lose. My LBM is 100lbs. I am not in the heathy body fat range.

I do not disagree that your numbers suggest you could easily lose 10-20 lbs but I would like to say that having seen your daily instagram posts and you do not look like you need to drop that much weight. I am the same height as you and used to weigh the same (in fact nearer the 140lb mark) and I looked nowhere near as good as you do. Seriously, I looked chunky and out of proportion. I excised a lot and weight trained, just like you.

I’m now around the 130lb mark and look so much better, it’s taken a few years of low carb and real food to get there - and consistency (I was always trying to lose weight and have been all my life). Consistency was key I think - I often got derailed after a few glasses of wine. I no longer drink, but I did manage to get to 130lb with the wine  I just stayed very consistent and like I say stuck to real food - no low carb salad dressing, no low carb breads or pancakes, no low carb cakes, no sweeteners. Meat, fish, salad, veg with olive oil. I do wonder when things are made with low carb stuff for example cake or bread if the processing is part of the problem - almond flour could be metabolised in a very different way from actual almonds (maybe) just like a boiled potato is very different from a potato chip.

Anyhoo, sorry I started rambling. Just to say, I think you look fab, but I do (really do) understand your need/want to get to a lower weight. But try to enjoy being you - your daily posts bring a little joy to my day

Yes, and the fact that she has struggled with constipation on keto for so long is also a factor saying keto perhaps is not the best for her body. I had to stop eating keto because of constipation and just started eating oranges for breakfast and continued with fish and salads in other meals like on keto. It made a big difference, not on my weight, but I am far from constipated now. My weight did not change anything. I did not even gain more water weight by the change, probably because oranges have low glycemic index.

I am 5.2, female, and when I get to 150 I will consider it my perfect weight no matter what med stats state. Why? Because I carry muscle like the hulk, and prefer curved muscular to lean ripped.

(What The Fast?!) #88

Ha! What I WANT is for my body to reflect the effort and work that I put in on a consistent basis. When I look at myself in a bikini, it surely does not. (And no, it’s not a body dysmorphia thing - I have verified this with many of my friends/family.)

@PGG That’s so sweet, thank you! I LOVE the Instagram keto community and posting there really helps to keep me motivated especially when I’m feeling frustrated with the lack of progress.

I don’t know what you look like but I suggest trying different types of exercise. You may be the type of body that builds muscle very easily but perhaps not in the places you want. When I was in high school, I ran a lot and had a completely flat stomach but I was 5’7" and 170 and looked fat because I had so much weight in my thighs. In college I started swimming a lot more which evened out my muscles and made me not so bottom-heavy. It may not be an issue with your diet but maybe you are too bulky in the wrong places and that’s why you don’t like the way you look…just a guess.

(Daniel DiDonato) #90

Ok, question, are you healthier? Do you feel better? Do your clothes fit better, is your movement and balance improved? If so, your winning! Next question, do you really need to loose that much weight? The less you have to loose, the slower it goes, also, how are you measureing your weight loss? You mite try increasing your carb intake, and make sure your eating enough. This thing is one giant experiment, to find what works for you.

(What The Fast?!) #91

Thanks - I have tried LOTS of workouts! The good news is that I LOVE working out! I am a cyclist, but I also am currently do strength training/weight lifting 5 days a week and have reduced my cycling quite a bit. I did reformer pilates for many months, but am taking a break from that for about a month while I do a 5 weeks glute/legs program. I have done bootcamps, pilates, barre, yoga, etc. I love trying new workouts!

@BrotherDiDonato Am I healthier? Depends on what you mean. I ate very clean before keto, the only thing that changed is that I took out carbs and added in fat. Do I feel better? I feel literally exactly the same as before keto. My energy and sleep have always been great, so no change there. Do my clothes fit better? No. Measurements the same too. Do I need to loose weight? Yes, 100%. At 32% body fat, I DEFINITELY do. Also, losing weight on the bike makes a HUGE difference.

Agree, totally. I’m giving keto probably one more month. If nothing changes by then, I will probably go back to a whole foods approach with more carbs and a lower fat %. I’m also working on getting in with an endocrinologist for bio-identical hormones. I have a feeling it’s more about that than anything else.

Every time I do extended fasting, my period goes missing. It’s the reason I don’t think it’s healthy (for me specifically). When the body is working correctly, your monthly cycle should be like clockwork and that’s definitely not the case right now.

(Chris) #92

You’re tracking everything. Drop your calories 10% for 2 weeks, If that doesn’t work, drop it another 10% for 2 more weeks. At some point, things will give.

(What The Fast?!) #93

I did this for 7 weeks. I slowly decreased macros (following the DeeperState Keto program that Keto Savage developed) each week for 7 weeks. At the end of 7 weeks, I had my RMR tested and it had dropped significantly. Reducing calories works for some people, but for others it causes your RMR/BMR to drop to match your intake.

At this point, everything points to hormonal problems. Even with lots of fasting, my weight drops but then comes right back.

(Chris) #94

Have you checked into a plan like the vertical diet? Either way, any diet that is going to reduce your weight past knocking off the low hanging fruit is going to require some mix of calorie restriction or caloric expenditure increase.

Sorry.
