What “healthy” foods do you miss eating?

#21

Berries, I have been craving strawberries lately which I see can be enjoyed on Keto in moderation…raspberries, blueberries, blackberries…I could have happily lived on berries and Greek yogurt pre-Keto! I read the Obesity Code book last night and found it very interesting as Dr. Fungs fasting plans in the back of the book include green apple, berries, etc…I think the problem is totally individual and solely related to how in season berries or whole foods effect your insulin and/or cravings!

I have an issue with hot peppers or similar spicy food. I get immediate allergy symptoms. So, I eat them for a little while, then stop eating them for months.

I still miss pizza and will have this a few times per year. (The real pizza, thin crust, wood or other fired.) I will also eat wild rice or even a potato at times when we go out, though I try to substitute when I can.

Other than that, I’ve developed fake foods that take the place of real. For instance, instead of pasta, I’ll have meat sauce (say, ground beef, sausage, olives, Rao’s, etc.). I don’t really miss the “pasta” part. I was never a big bread eater.

I miss watermelon and tomatoes. I have some awesome basil growing in my garden and I’d love to be able to chop up a big, juicy, heirloom tomato and mix a bunch of chopped, fresh, basil and some salt with it and feast! And I used to eat a whole watermelon about every 4 days!

I can eat carrots, berries, apples, and pears in keto level amounts, no problem.
I only have them when in season or if I froze them for winter. We also dry apples, I can eat just a slice or two of those and I’m ok. .

What I miss is fresh figs and mandarin oranges. Once I start on either of those it is eat till they are gone. As for veggies, I get to eat the ones I really love and can leave the rest. If I added back in anything it would be a roasted sweet potato now and then.

What I really miss is home made sour dough bread from my starter. But I concentrate on what I can have and I have loved learning to make low carb/ketoed breads. I like my keto crackers better than any store bought ones.

Watermelon, too many fat tomatoes from the garden, figs, sweet potato, cherries. But mostly watermelon and numerous tomatoes with salt on both. Especially now that it’s summertime.

Corn tortillas.

Me too! Apples, and the funny thing is I, unlike you, wasn’t a big apple eater to start with. I just miss them.
And porridge, with cinnamon. and cream. Only two things I have missed.

You could certainly have one on maintenance (9 net carbs) but if you couldn’t stop at one then better to avoid.

I’m new to keto but how is fruit not healthy? I understand it spikes sugars and kick someone out of keto but even esrly humans living anywhere remotely warm would have had a steady fruit filled diet. Fruits are very natural obviously as they come from the earth and have some health benefits. Would the most natural way of eating for a human to be in and out of ketosis ans food was available? Mostly eating animals as they provide the most nutrients and energy but not skimping on fruit hanging from a tree or Bush?

I understand the goal.we are all going for is no sugar and full keto but the term “heslthy” seems off to me if it doesnt include fruits and veggies in moderation. Maybe I simply dont know the facts though.

Watch Gary Fettke Is Fruit Good or Bad for you on You Tube. Sorry I cant seem to link it! Well worth a watch. I don’t think you will want to eat fruit again!

Summer fruits…the market is filled with cherries, apricots, nectarines, watermelon… I know, I know, sugar, sugar and more sugar, but damn fruit was delicious.

Granny Smith apples. Not tempted but do miss that crunch, I can imagine the turmoil Adam and Eve went through

If we actually ate off the land according to seasons like wild animals do and had to hustle for every morsel we put into our mouths then fruit would serve a great purpose. In the summer and fall we would use it as energy and to fatten up for the winter. Then we’d eat meat, what we preserved from the summer and our own fat when there wasn’t any during the winter and early spring. Now we can have fruit year round and also live in a food abundant society. Add to that the fact that fruit now isn’t the same as fruit back then, it’s bigger and sweeter. Some people who do keto eat fruit but just count it in their macros and stick to the lowest carb options.

Love this reference! Although I gather that neither of those two had a granny…!:wink::green_apple::snake:

I miss apples, too - I used to eat loads of them.

:grinning:

Chocolate. That’s “healthy” isn’t it? :joy::joy:

Not exactly, modern cultivated fruits are very different from their ancestral counterparts. The apples our ancestors are would have been about 2 bites of fruit and very tart, nothing like the meal-sized sweet ones you can buy in a grocery store today that are filled with sugar. And the same goes for all of them. You can forage in the forest for natural fruits, but there’s not much natural about what you buy in the store.

Fruits, Chocolates ( Yes it’s healthy!) Tortillas, Chips n Salsa, Captain Crunch, Cookies and Cake, Ice Cream… Ok so now you know why I am a T2D. There are some Keto friendly options of some of these but, not the same and then of course comes over indulging…next.

I think this thread may be provoking a cephalic insulin response!
Haha! Stop now with your dirty sweet talk🤫

Rice. I love rice. I even bought a fancy 300 dollarydoo rice cooker to cook it in. It’s in storage, now.

Hrm, <stammers as he weighs his response. Scrolls, and finds>

<nods to self, continues to scroll>

Aah, much better, pedant I am.

There was a transitional period where I missed the starchy vegetables, like onions or the frutetables, like tomatoes. However, I still alight at the smell of baking bread, but I’ve come up with sufficient means to compensate for what I’d fear I missed early on.

If you put a gun to my head (please don’t) I’d have to say; “Beer.” The thing is, I can have a beer, I’d have to make other carb-restricting adjustments throughout the day, and I don’t miss beer that much.
