What did you learn today?

I learned that with the shorter into to the podcast it takes about 6 miles to listen to a episode.

On protein, age, and slow weight loss.

This morning I listed to a video by Stuart Philips on YouTube. He is a protein expert. I liked what he had to say and made my slower loss almost seem like a good thing. Basically the point was that as we age, we tend to both lose more muscle as well as not be able to build it back up again. And muscle loss in the elderly is one of the fastest ways to the grave. (not his words).

In another video someone else said a main reason people end up in care facilities is because they have lost so much muscle they can no longer get up out of their chairs.

Someone else once said that stronger people live longer.

So hanging on to as much muscle as possible is very important as we age. Yes, everyone knows this. Or should. But what does this have to do with slow weight loss in us old folks? When one loses weight, a certain percent of that loss is going to be muscle. Stuart said, or implied, that the faster one loses weight, the higher percent of that loss is going to be lean muscle tissue, and not only fat. He used the example of the ā€˜biggest losers’ tv, and those who lost it faster, lost more muscle tissue. And when they gained weight back eventually, they did not gain back the muscle tissue they lost, mostly just fat.

So this past year, as I’ve grumbled about losing slowly, I’m thinking/hoping that what I have lost is a higher % of fat, than if I had lost more, faster. I know my body composition has changed too and at times have gotten smaller when the scale did not change. (muscle weighs more than fat for equal volumes). And I’ve always tended to carry a lot of muscle and bone tissue, so hopefully my peasant ā€˜work-in-the-fields’ genes/body build are helping too.

He said something interesting too, that older people are not encouraged to lose weight. It was an off-handed comment and I’d like to know more. But in context of what he was discussing, it had something to do with losing too high percent of muscle when losing at advanced age. Since I am in my mid 70s :scream_cat: that is another reason for having a final goal higher than all you younger folks. Must look into this more.

Here is where one must trust their instincts. I know i am still too heavy now (195-ish), but realistically, how much more loss would be optimal. I’m thinking around 170, though I wont know till I get closer. I am not looking to lose 7 vanity pounds, or to fit into a bikini, but rather an optimal weight for my age to live the longest, high quality life. Time will tell.

Oh, and on protein and aging… eat enough of it to keep muscles up to snuff. As Bikman says, when it ketosis, don’t fear protein. Stuart was saying sort of the same thing.

I learned that Siim Land has a book coming out - I like his podcast so am looking forward to reading it :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, then, I will definitely make a point of not putting any parsely in my vagina!

Remember the first rule of Fasting Club . . .

Makes you glad for our esoteric membership, though - imagine if you hadn’t had the warning!

It sounds as much fun as the comments on YouTube, lol!

(Running from stupidity) #811

Very similar, yes

I’ve learned what the body wants to do, it does. Spent a few weeks without hunger. 111 pounds, but suddenly starving lately (and healing from the bathtub encounter). Keto food, up six pounds (117!). I’m happy with that, because my legs, arms, and face looked way too thin! Your body knows best! Trust it. Food has never tasted so good!

(Empress of the Unexpected) #813

Body: Regina - what was up with that?. We are seriously hurting here.

Sorry, can’t run and think at the same time. Especially not in bathrooms.

Body - ok, let’s have a chat. You have been seriously undereating, which would be okay if you hadn’t crashed into the bathtub. But now, I need resources.

What kind?

Body: Protein, calcium, let’s say a little rib padding? And an out of control appetite.

So… TWO porkchops and sour cream?

Body: yep, you’ll love it. I will love it. You will be amazed at the difference.

#814

I learned that @Regina’s internal dialogues make more sense than her external ones

(Empress of the Unexpected) #815

I will take that as a compliment…

#816

It’s all interesting

(Empress of the Unexpected) #817

Joking aside, I forget which day post-rib cage I’m on, but I am feeling better and suddenly starving! Don’t think that is a coincidence.

#818

Probably not - you need nutrients to heal properly.

(Running from stupidity) #819

It’s probably internal forum seven posts worth there, though

This is my favorite thread these days.

Or you can buy it from my sister’s company Tin Star Foods!! It’s available on Amazon and Whole Foods. It’s delicious, made the way our mom taught her.

I’ve been in a constant learning state of mind for 4 weeks now!! Got plugged into that ā€œthe skinny on fatā€ video series this last week and my mind is continually blown. By the way, I think you’re awesome and love the way you interact with and support people in this forum!

(Running from stupidity) #822

Why, thank you :blush::blush:

Castoreum, which is used as vanilla flavoring in candies, baked goods, etc., is actually a secretion from beaver castor sacs. Because of its close proximity to the anal glands, it is often a combination of castor gland secretions, anal gland secretions, and urine.

So if you see something with ā€œartifical vanilla flavoringā€, just say No.

(Running from stupidity) #824

LOL, I was about to post the below here…
