What did you learn today?

I’ve written for some technical journals in my field and presented papers at a couple of conferences. I’ve tried to live by that saying. When writing for a magazine, they frequently pay by the page, but those pages are precious real estate and you’d better not go too long just for the sake getting another page.

While writing here is generally free (“memory is cheap” - says everybody), I try to only contribute worthwhile things.

Ha ha ha
I wish I could claim it was because of Keto.:wink:

I can’t remember which user it was, but someone brought to my attention recently that I was sort of mindlessly beating that ol’ “slowing metabolism” drum. We really have no idea about what leads to metabolic slowdown outside extended periods of caloric restriction or starvation and, of course, weight loss itself. If may very well be that as long as you change things up enough and don’t give your body reason to think it’s in for a long metabolic winter that metabolism won’t slow any more than what would be expected from just having less body fat.

Today I was listening to an old HVMN podcast and learned that when elite athletes are in ketosis, when they exercise, they burn twice as much fat as when they exercise and are burning carbs. I thought this was interesting, of course I am approaching elite status😉.

But seriously, no studies on other body types but I would guess it is a sliding scale.

Nice quote and it just led to a decision on something I’ve been struggling with for days. I’m going to visit family in a week and they are not keto but for the most part eat good whole foods. I’m at my goal weight so i’m just going to relax things a bit and stick to that main rule. No processed food. So no bread, or pasta, or foods with sugar. But a bit of potato, or brown rice, or fava beans for a week won’t really do any damage.

Just learned this word!!!

Well…thanks to this board, I discovered packaged pork rinds. Never knew about them before. Not that I love them, but I’ve bought them a few times in the last year as a snack option. Today to my unpleasant shock, I learned they might be made with trans fats… Really???
How could I have missed this fact? WTF???
Really disappointed…more in myself, than the product. Thus, No more packaged rinds for me.

Food for thought here I guess.

Yup. The better written it is the more chance of getting return business, anyway.

I try to only contribute worthwhile things.

I’ve considered that approach.

I worry that I do that too, for sure. Especially inside my head

We really have no idea about what leads to metabolic slowdown outside extended periods of caloric restriction or starvation and, of course, weight loss itself

Exactly.

If may very well be that as long as you change things up enough and don’t give your body reason to think it’s in for a long metabolic winter that metabolism won’t slow any more than what would be expected from just having less body fat.

Exactly 2

You are!

And weren’t surprised to discover why I like it so much, I suspect

Some are, some aren’t, as I understand it.

OTOH, I’m making my own. Just finished rendering some lard to cook them in.

Patience.

Let me elaborate. There are some truly wonderful people out there that take their jobs seriously. When my contacts did not arrive (rub, rub, the eyes) I called UPS Small Package in desperation. (I did get a 20 overnight fee refund from 1-800 contacts). This lady was so cool, and together we arrived at the fact that I wasn’t driving to Ontario in rush hour on a Friday. UPS truck broke down. What she suggested would have been so cool pre-keto (popcorn and a great movie), but my point is this was a really nice person on the other end of the phone. Wish everyone could take their phone job so seriously.

Last one for the day.

I broke keto yesterday because I had a stomach flu and everything meaty was causing pain, so I got some dry crackers.

Today however, in a better frame of mind I looked up why meat was hurting me. It turns out that some illnesses cause a slowdown in gastric emptying and as we know meat proteins are already slow to digest hence part of their wonderful satiating properties.

I then found a list of foods that are better for those with gastroparesis (slowed gastric emptying) and found two items at the top of the list that were keto friendly, eggs and peanut butter. But then I wondered: why are eggs ok but not meat? The answer came from a post by @Keto6468 on another thread. It turns out eggs have more rapidly digested proteins than any meats.

If I haven’t said it yet, I absolutely love this forum. I learn stuff here every day. But still, this thread is a great idea for bring it all together.

Glad you are feeling better!

I learned that this diet can reduce kidney stones. As a chronic kidney stone maker my pH has gone from slightly acidic (6.0) to neutral (7.0) since starting this diet. I was concerned that a keto diet (which can be acidic) on top of acidic ketones would make my situation worse. NOPE!

Some 15 years ago we had a ongoing drama with the phone company. Finally found an operator who took our poor treatment quite personally & went above & beyond to solve it - I still remember her name

That EVERY type of retail store I visited out the outlets…offer some type of processed food junk
From chips, candy, sugar covered items, crackers, cookies, and sodas
In ALL the aisles, on end caps, and at the checkouts

Obesity Epidemic
Wonder why…hummmm🤔

So much this!

Sometimes I’ll think, I bet there’s some good info in that wall of text. Too bad there’s no way of knowing.

(Running from stupidity) #239

You’re a better person than me, I never think that.

Too bad there’s no way of knowing.

Too true.
