What causes stall in weight loss

(Katie) #1

I recently started keto, this being my fourth week. The first two weeks I lost a total of 5 pounds, but week three I gained one pound back and so far this week I haven’t lost anything.
I track everything I eat in my fitness pal, focusing on macros which usually end up around 72% fat, 23% protein, and 5% carbs and eat 1600 calories a day. Any tips on what I may be causing a stall in weight loss?

Not sure, but it’s pretty common if you read many of the threads. I’m on a stall myself. 4 weeks in I lost a little over 8 pounds. Week five I gained back 2.5. I know they say don’t follow the scale, but cloths that were starting to fit again have gotten snugger.:frowning:

There was a name for this back in the time of Adkins - Post Induction Stall Sydnrome. Yes, PISS.

Seems like it’s common enough for there to be a name for it. The answer is to Keep Calm and Keto On.

Err… weight loss stall? maybe you are losing fat yet gaining muscle.

So it is not something to be worried about.

Two weeks is not a stall. Your body needs time to adjust after the first water loss, and sort out issues that made you gain weight in the first place. KETO is not an instant results recipe, it is a long term way of eating/way of life that has great health benefits, and, maybe you’ll also lose some pounds. If you focus on health in stead of weight you’ll worry less about the scale and you’ll understand that your body needs time to heal itself. Also, if you have not so much to lose it will go slower anyway.

Keep calm and keto on. You’re on the right track!

You aren’t going to lose the same amount every week.
Women’s weight fluctuates far more than men, especially around our time of month.
Are you close to shark week?
Im on day 12, carb loaded for two of those and have lost 3kg (6.6pounds).
I am not expecting to lose anything in the next few weeks.
Your body needs to go through an adjustment period.
And if you do not have a great deal of weight to lose, then don’t expect big numbers.
Good luck

Pretty much every newbie goes through exactly what you’ve reported. My weight loss followed a consistent pattern of good loss - stall/gain/stall/gain - good loss - stall - stall -stall - good loss etc. weight loss isn’t linear. And keto isn’t a magic bullet, but it works over time.
Also your body might be busy healing rather than dropping weight, so whatever is happening don’t lose heart as there will be hidden progress. Just stick with it :+1:

Hi,

Just to add to what others are saying I have noticed a defo pattern in my weightloss.

I loose 3-5lb then I’ll gain it back on the I’ll loose 7-10lb and only gain back 3-5lb. It is slow progress and hard to stay motivated when you stall and gain. But I have noticed that after I gain following weightloss, next time I loose weight past that same amount, it stays off!!

I lost 4lb forllowing a 3day fast last week but 4 days later I have gained it all back, but I know I haven’t done anything to actually gain that much so I am
Staying strong and focused weighting to drop that weight for good.

It’s hard when you start especially if have weight to loose because you see all these images and stories of people loosing crazy amounts in matter of weeks but the reality is slow and steady. But I am 10months in and 40lb down. Just have to focus on the other benifits if keto and remember the fabel of the hare and the turtle.

Good luck & keto on.

I didn’t call it a stall until three months of no weight loss occurred. I also didn’t gain either so I wasn’t unhappy. I lowered my added fat for breakfast and lost five pounds but managed to gain it back but I was sick with a bad cold for almost three weeks. Now for fun I am getting back into running and trying to add a mile or two each week. Also planing on going back to the gym for a quick set of Nautilus during my short runs. OP where I am going with this is be patient and listen to you body. Although some can get rapid results in weight loss many don’t. This is a lot of change in the body and it takes time. Heck it took me three months to get fat adapted and I think things are still happening on a cellular level. I am 57 and I have plenty of time to work on my heath. I enjoy making small changes to see what happens but will often look at it over months instead of days. At four weeks you are not likely adapted so just keep carbs low and watch what happens. Trust me you will get there.

I have no idea what causes a stall, becauae it will be different for everybody. I was stalling for a few weeks, but loss sped up again after just one single fasting day. It may have been the digestive enzymes that I bought the day after, or having more protein snack, or pretty much any of the things I changed. I could gain weight on omad and lose on snacking, depending on all the different factors that play a role in metabolism. I mostly just try to do what I feel like which is still low carb/keto.
