Weird little NSV

(Mary Kubasak) #1

So, you know those little brown spots that in the past I have heard called “age-spots” or “liver-spots” - I was starting to get them on my hands last year at age 56, following this diet and getting my fasting serum insulin down by more than half (36 -> 14 at last measurement…) they have all upped and disappeared… I guess the term “liver-spots” had something to it after all…

Mine have become more apparent 93 days in…

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

For heaven’s sake, you’re absolutely right! I never even noticed, but they are gone, most of them, and the ones that are left are much fainter.

I wasn’t sure where to put this so hope you don’t mind me adding them here.

I’ve been keto since maybe September or October. Anyway, since adopting this lifestyle I’ve noticed a few things that have been pretty cool.

  1. I had a cyst on my right hand that started shrinking, within about a month or so it was completely gone. Just gone, I’d had it for probably over two years.
  2. My skin is so much better this winter. I work outside a lot and my hands chap and my fingers split. This year it has been so much better as to be amazing. Even other areas that get painfully dry are better this year.
  3. I just feel better. I sleep better.
  4. Food tastes better, weird but it does.
  5. Come to think of it, I do believe the skin on my hands is clearer now, too.

That being said I did have a major oh shit moment late last night. I woke up in the middle of the night not feeling well, with indigestion, etc. The first thought I had was “Oh, Lord, this is it”. I had to remind myself I’d been eating a lot of chorizo and jalapenos the last couple days soooo I belched, prayed and went back to sleep. This morning all was good. Laying off the chorizo for a couple of days, I think.

Wow - same here! I didn’t notice it before, but yeah, no spots on my hands anymore. How weird! @richard - have you ever heard of this? I don’t remember this topic on any previous podcast…

The last few years I had developed old people dry crepey wrinkly skin on my hands and arms :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Now that I’m IF/EF Keto WOE its reversing

I’m 58, and have been getting a few of those spots on the back of both hands for a few years now. They come and go - I can’t really relate them to keto or not. Right now I’ve got 4 of them on my left hand and none on the right.

Never heard of those being affected. I wonder if this is similar to Acanthosis nigricans which is a sign of insulin resistance.

So this is semi related,in her later years my mother had a dark spot above her upper lip. In my 40’s I too developed the same lovely mark. I was not happy with it to say the least. Shortly thereafter I went grain free in an attempt to help with infertility. Fortunately, at least the spot went away. I believe these types of spots are AGE spots caused by glycation and mine went away when I ditched grains and the sugars that went with them. Interestingly, enough the hated spot returned when on the advice of many I upped my carbs to help my thyroid disease (I know, I know, such an idiot) but it has since disappeared again. Hoping it never returns. I do have a few spots on my hands but I’m not sure if they are freckles or something else. I have only been low carb since November and not religiously since the week after I started I was in Disney for 10 days and was no stranger to their candy shop. And then Christmas etc… :weary: so we shall see if they go away.
