Weight loss, energy, spring repairs and more thoughts

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #1

Happy Saturday for those of you reading this right after I post it. I’m getting ready to remove an old deck at my house and have no worries about energy. Pre-keto I would have to pace myself and today there will be no pacing. I’m going to work until it is done.

But waking up I have been reading FB threads on fasting, this forum (so much better than FB) and tweets. I guess I am a social media junkie.

Been seeing the usual posts about I’ve lost X but it does not seem I’m losing fast enough. Oh gosh, people, it takes time. Yes, there are people who lose an amazing amount of wt fast. But for most of us, we have to overcome years of metabolic debt.

Today I hit 206lbs. This is the lowest I have been since I was 48yo and that was after chest surgery and I just did not eat for 3 months. I am doing resistance training so muscle gain counters some of my fat loss.

I wanted to check how fast I have been losing weight since going strict keto on 6/17/18. The stars are in alignment on these calculations:

( 286 days / 7 days / week ) = 41 weeks.
248 lbs - 206 = 42 lbs.

42/41 = ~ 1 lb a week. I’ve had stalls, I have had faster wt loss in a week with fasting. I’ve had no weight loss fasting. But 1 lb a week is something to celebrate. If this continues at 1 lb a week in 10 weeks I will no longer be obese. I’m warming up my happy dance. Likely I will reach 196 lbs in less than 10 weeks since EF seems to be helping me along at 1.5 to 2 lbs a week right now.

I just wanted to post this here for our newbie friends. Be patient, take care of yourself and stay true to KETO for life. KCKO.

Now to wake up my neighbor taking out a deck.

I’ve moved it into the Newbies section to increase eyeballs from the relevant audience.

Doubt it’ll help, though - the ones who read other people’s threads aren’t the ones who post that sort of thing

Great results, Eric!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful insight. :+1:

Good luck on the deck.

Great attitude and progress. The way I look at it even in a stall I am still going the right direction.

Post what “sort of thing”?

Hi Eric,

That is great news and very encouraging! It’s interesting to me to read the posts from those who have done this for a while, had their struggles and stayed with it. As someone newer to keto, it helps me remember that this is a marathon not a 5k and it takes patience and endurance.

Have fun building that deck! I hope one day I will also enjoy that kind of energy. Something to look forward to!

It took me awhile to get to this place. Someone here said all the years of metabolic abuse takes time. I’ve come to like the term metabolic debt. I have a lot. Even though I was barely pre-dibetic my insulin resistance is much greater than my wife’s who was declared T2D several years ago. She is not yet strict keto but her BG and A1C are such that she in in T2D remission.

aka whining.

Many of the people who come to these forums have been misinformed about what a well-formulated ketogenic diet is and what it can and cannot do. It’s not their fault. I see it as one of the goals of these forums to help alleviate that ignorance. In my experience, once they are properly informed, most of these people turn out to be valuable and insightful members of these forums.

I have also found that the more positive I can keep my own attitude, the better off I am. After all, the world is what it is, not what I would have it be, and a positive attitude is a great coping skill. It also keeps my cortisol from spiking, so there’s that, too.

In general people tend to be equally impatient with fitness and weight loss. They in many cases have unreal expectations of losing that 50 extra pounds and toning up this month. I kind of feel bad when at the end of April a prospective June bride is asking for help to lose X pounds in a month. I guess I can understand with the amount of commercials on the radio promoting rapid weight loss. The other day I heard one (The Health Dare) talking about how she lost 80 pounds in 90 days and is now a coach.

I think a better approach is to learn how to eat better and slowly lose or maintain weight. Just not gaining that 4 or 5 pounds a year can be a huge victory when looked at through a time span of a decade.

I personally prefer to call a spade a spade.

The only way one learns is to research & ask questions, which I am all for. There are those who post well formulated questions & put the advice given to good use… There are also those who would rather whine. I prefer not to be a sounding board for the latter.

Thankfully, I do not base my attitude or outlook on life on such matters. If someone is too ho-hum, I see myself out.

I would only ask how likely you are to hear information from someone who tells you you are whining, as opposed to someone who finds a friendlier way of presenting the information.

I apologize, I wasn’t fully clear. I think it’s perfectly normal to express when you’re discouraged & seek advice. Geez, I’m not that stoic. But, there does come a point when you can clearly tell that the advice is falling on deaf ears. I have seen it here a few times. I have seen it on other forums. I usually just bypass those type of posts altogether.

I may personally think that someone is whining but, I was also raised not to say everything that crosses my mind.

I had someone in a FB group today ask me why I was pushing to 72hr fast and said that was scary. The weird thing is they were on a 32hr dry fast. Dr, Fung never recommends dry fasts. Now that is scary.

There is a lot more lack of knowledge on FB and it is so much harder to convey the nuanced concepts that are many times needed for full understanding.

I think it was about six months ago I kept seeing negative things about facebook and felt like they were manipulating content unfairly or with bias. So I just tuned out and only use it to see pictures of the grandkids on a limited basis. I have never used FB for anything keto related.
