Weight gain?!

(Samantha J Ross) #1

Hey guys,

So I just started keto again after a successful run in the summer. The first time I tried it I lost 11 pounds in just 3 weeks. Then I went on vacation and ate delicious carby foods, celebrated my birthday and started school. It was a struggle to get back into good habits. I also got depressed and started binging so I gained all the weight back. I decided enough is enough so now I’m doing it again and have maintained ketosis. I don’t have cravings for carbs anymore. I have a ton more energy. However, the past couple of days I have gained weight. About two pounds. I have no idea why. I eat two to three meals a day with some snacks such as nuts or a low carb smoothie. The smoothie is only 100 calories/ serving and I’m not worried about the calories from nuts because everything else I eat is so low calorie. For example my breakfast is around 250 calories or less. Yesterday I worked out for two hours. I was still up in weight. Is this diet not for me or am I doing something wrong?

Any input is appreciated. Also I apologize for the formatting. I’m using my phone. Thanks guys!

Don’t look at daily weight results to tell you much aside from water gain/loss. Keep going and start tracking the trend.

Last week, I literally lost 3 lbs one day and then weighed myself before and after a warm bath and lost another pound. Then, just a few days later, I literally gained 5lbs in one day. It all depends on water retention, BM’s, what’s in your digestive track, etc.

I freaked out too! I initially lost 8lbs, then stopped. I’d been religious about the carbs:astonished:, weights, cardio… 22 days later my scale hasn’t moved from 165 ,but I went from a 38" to a 34" waist! True story. I love how I’m feeling… KCKO! As they say.:grinning:

Hey thanks for responding so quickly, guys! I feel better about it now haha. I guess I need to be more patient and trust the process. I just got worried because I had finally gotten lower than 138 pounds which is so hard for me to do. It’s been months since I was under that. Then my weight crept back up to 138. I felt frustrated because I don’t want to be at a plateau so soon. I’m making an appointment tomorrow to have my thyroid checked out which was recommended by my psychiatrist. Tbh, kinda hoping it’s under active as that would solve a lot of problems! Had to look up KCKO! It’s cute! Haha

My advice is to worry less about calories & focus more on eating enough at each meal that you don’t snack in between.

Keto works by lowering your insulin levels which allows your fat cells to release fat. Every time you eat something you spike insulin.

When I eat something a bit more carbs than expected I always gain weight and it it harder to get back into Ketosis each time. I would keep plugging along then have a whoosh and would lose a whole heap and then stopping again for a bit.

My suggestion would be to try and stick with 3 meals or less rather than meals plus snacks and only track your carbs and protein, not worrying about calories and just eat to satiety. You will find your body will eventually work it out. Somehow once I am back in ketosis I end up as if by magic eating roughly the right ratios without trying.

So I’ve never broken ketosis since I have been in it. Do you guys think I should just give up nuts altogether then? I haven’t had any in the past couple of days. I’m thinking I could be possibly not eating enough so my metabolism has slowed.
