Week Long Binge

#1

Well it happened and it all started with pizza which is my biggest weakness :disappointed_relieved: Today should be my 30th day doing Keto but I’ve hit a low and feel like a drug addict getting her fix with these carbs for the past week! Christmas cookies galore over here.

I am struggling because I am already at my goal weight (120 lbs, 5’4 height, and active) and felt that I was losing too much weight while in ketosis. I was losing 5 lbs a week and fast. I upped my carbs and calories after reading in to the advice of the forum but it eventually lead me back to the breads and sweets :frowning:

A couple questions, how do I successfully up my carbs while doing a LCHF diet without going on a bender? I noticed if my carbs were up to even 30-40g I was kicked out of ketosis. I also worry if my carbs get too high along with my fats aren’t I essentially doing a high carb high fat diet? :joy:

Don’t up your carbs. Up protein and especially fat. Don’t slide into a calorie deficit. Add lots of oils. Carbs will increase hunger and put you on a slippery slope for a cookie bender. I easily get 5000 calories a day with keto when desired

Also, fathead pizza can be better than regular when executed properly. Eat your heart out little Caesar

Bunny, congrats on hitting your goal weight! Many of us would love to be in that position.

As to falling off the wagon, since it happens to EVERY-SINGLE-ONE-OF-US… just start again tomorrow, and as you will see everywhere on this site… Keep Calm and Keto On (KCKO)

Now, to the core of your problem. Carbs should never be re-upped. Doesn’t mean you should not eat foods with carbs, but if you are insulin-resistive. i.e. your insulin doesn’t work like it should, then you should definitely do your best to avoid carbs. PS 30-40g of carbs IS NOT HIGH CARB. It is still low carb, but just higher than what your body can manage.

So, to solve your problem. Eat healthy, with the goal of Low Carb, Moderate Protein, High/Healthily fat.

In your specific case, you need to think in terms of calories. How can you get more calories so that you can maintain your weight. Since both Carbs and Protein are out… the answer is fat.

Congratulations you now get to eat as many delicious fat bombs as you want! Head over to the recipe section and start exploring the amazingly tasty options that you have. Consider doubling the amount of butter, olive oil and coconut oil in any normal recipe you cook. Look for cuts of meat that have higher fat content (i.e. avoid chicken breast, lean cuts of meet etc), and feel free to sneak as much cooked bacon as you can in to your salads or dipped in 90% chocolate, mmm.

This is why I say so many of us are going to be envious of your achievement. If only we had the same “problem” we would be dancing in the streets. You basically don’t have a problem, but an incredible opportunity.

KCKO, and let us know how you are progressing! We all need an inspiration and you can be that to everyone here.

Thank you for that and for the tips. Will definitely consider the additions of higher fat and moderate proteins while still keeping my carbs low!

There is a school of thought that believes too much protein is detrimental to optimum health. Also, there are good reasons for not being in ketosis all the time, especially if you’re healthy.

Keep in mind that all carbs are not created equal. Eating junk is not the same as eating 50g of high nutrient carbs like berries, carrots, sweet potatoes, resistant starches, etc.

Thank you, good point. Maybe getting more of the high nutrient carbs will help too?

I’m a newly diagnosed diabetic. I aim to eat zero carbs. I’m highly insulin resistant. Eating any amount of carbs shows up as a large BG spike.

Eating no carb, or more realistically <5 grams, counting foods that claim <1 gram per serving as equal to one gram.

I have heard here that you really just need to eat the right amount of protein for your Lean Body Mass. Then from there eat fat to saity. After eating the right amount of protein, just eat fat. I find myself only eating one meal a day. Not planned, just happens. I’m not hungry. When I feel a bit off, and it makes me think I need to eat, I put a pinch of salt on my tongue. Usually gets rid of that feeling for a couple of hours.

take a look at this list.

Do them all !

Would you believe I’ve been doing all 14 of those. Most of them seem to be just a by coincidence of the way I eat. Cinnamon and apple cider vinegar was the only things new that have have added in the past week. So far, cinnamon seems to raise my BG a lot. I had tried it a few times, and after having a big mug of it brewed like a tea (no sugar added) testing my BG 30 minutes later showed a large spike. About 30 points. This was about 6 hours into a fast as well.

Wonder if there is low carb versions ?

(Consensus is Politics) #12

I didn’t even think to check it. Is it a carb? I just assumed it wasn’t seeing as it’s supposed to lower insulin.

very good point.

this cinnamon has sugar. 100g of cinnamon must be alot.

Interesting article with a lot of good ideas. Also nice to get the positive reinforcement for the ones I already am doing. 100g of cinnamon is a lot, my jar from target is only 71g and I have had it a long time, still half full. 100g is 38 whole teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Might have to try apple cider vinegar, and green tea.

The brand I’m using doesn’t even have a nutrition label on it. I didn’t buy this, it’s something we’ve had around the house for quite sometime. It doesn’t even have a sell by date on it.

4dml - people seem to be eating a lit of protein, according to meal pictures. Ho do you protect your kidneys??

(Ken) #17

If you choose to eat carbs, make them periodic rather than chronic. Carbs creeping into your daily pattern defeats the whole concept of lipolysis. If fat loss is the goal, restrict them to weekends.

Healthy kidneys will be able to process the protein levels associated with LC diets or even carnivore diets. But protein activates insulin, IGF1 and mTOR which are associated with aging, cancer, and mitochondrial function. So while our kidneys can handle it, too much protein is not conducive to optimum health from a cellular perspective.
