Water Retention After Weight Training

(Athena Elliston) #1

Whenever I have a really intense workout that results in sore muscles for several days I tend to retain water and weigh anywhere from 5-8 pounds heavier.

I understand that some of this comes with the territory, but what can I do to minimize this? I don’t like that my muscles feel swollen and bloated and that I am retaining water.

stretching, foam rolling, and being properly hydrated helps…

is working out a new thing?
usually after the first 2-3 weeks the soreness should be minimal…more like a “i used these muscles” versus being sore and inflammed

I incorporate Epsom salt baths, stay well hydrated long before working out (hydration begins the day before), good stretching/massaging.

I will say, I’ve been a consistent lifter/gym-goer since 2014, and I still experience the shift in water weight. And depending on how hard I push myself, I still experience soreness. However, the soreness doesn’t last nearly as long as it used to since getting into full swing with keto.
