Water intake

Hello all,

One thing I have noticed since starting Keto is that I want to drink more water. I have never been a huge water drinker. Over these last few days I have wanted water a lot more. Is a change in water intake something that happens; like you want water more?

Also is it okay of I put lemon in my water? Silly question to ask but I thought I would ask.

P.s. I might not be able to reply because I am at my replying limit for today. I can still like stuff though.

I drink a lot more water, mainly because I cut out all soft drinks and there is only so much coffee and tea that I want in a day.

Lemon is fine, just don’t add TOO much because oddly enough, as acidic as it is, it still contains some carbs - the juice of 1 lemon is about 3g of carbs. Not a lot, but you need to keep it in mind if you are trying to closely track carbs.

I squeeze 1/2 of a fresh lemon into a 2L pitcher of water and keep it in the fridge at home. I will alternate days with lime instead of lemon for a different taste.

Since a low carb diet tends to flush out electrolytes (sodium, postassium, and magnesium) and drinking a lot of water will accelerate that, you may want to supplement with those three. Some people make a ā€œKeto-adeā€ (as in Gator-ade) made from Lite Salt (50/50 potassium chloride and sodium chloride) and magnesium citrate.

I choose to take a magnesium supplement pill and just add pink salt to my foods, though I have on occasion added 1/2 tsp Lite Salt to a glass of water.

Yes. You do get thirstier because especially in the beginning you are losing a lot of water. I drink about ten cups a day and sometimes put lemon slices in.

My ketoade is ā€œas in (drinking the) kooladeā€

Hydration has been a struggle for me. I get dehydrated quickly (even with plenty of salt) if I don’t pay close attention. Sometimes it’s evening and I start to feel kind of crappy and realize I had three glasses of water all day, which is not nearly enough, then I have to drink up so I don’t wake up feeling wiped.

I move from the bed to a chair in the middle of the night because of hip pain. I always drink at least 4 oz of water when I do. I drink a lot of water and tea during the day. Much more than before keto.

Try a herbal tea bag in a bottle of water. Or plain soda water. If I try work out dehydrated, the sweat burns my eyes!!

Water is necessary to metabolize fat. If there is lots of water leaving your body then good things are happening and it’s vital to keep replacing that water. There’a lot of good reasons to drink water, actually:

Just learned my new thing for the day! I’ve noticed, in the past, that sometimes sweat really stings my eyes but most times it doesn’t. Now I know why. Thanks Lisa.

Well I’m glad! To add to that, I remember learning in med school that babies with cystic fibrosis used to ā€œtaste saltyā€ if their parents licked them - this was a way of identifying the disorder before doctors could do genetic testing. Basically, a fault in the cells’ sodium channels led to excessive sodium being excreted in sweat, hence the salty taste. Same kind of idea with dehydration - higher salt to water ratio means more burning eyes and salty sweat!

LOL, sorry but the image this line inspires is quite comical. It never occured to me to lick my child. But I do thank you for the science behind why sweat stings sometimes.

Interesting observations, indeed. While on Keto — and in particular while extended fasting — I notice that when I shower I will sometimes notice a saltier-than-normal runoff on my face. Never had this before. Perhaps I have been a little more dehydrated than before. Will continue to monitor this effect.
