Water and Salt

#1

I started my first ever fast after breakfast this morning, and I will use water and salt. But i cannot find out how to practically do it? ( Ive searched and read lots of links) I dont have himalayan pink, but I have white table salt. So what I need help with is:

  1. How much salt should i supplement every day? Are we talking teaspoons or what?

  2. How do i get it down?

I read its important to supplement preventative, but these simple questions have me baffled.

Overall during Keto, 2 tsp of pink salt/day has been recommended.

I still use that amount throughout the day in my water fasts. I add it to water, usually warm, and drink it. Others have recommended periodically putting a few crystals just under your tongue and allowing it to dissolve.

Thank you. I will look for the himalayan pink on monday. As for now, I struggle a bit. I quickly put a littlr salt on my tounge and rinse it away with water, but it is very unpleasant.
I will try to drink it in warm vater today, and see if that works better.

This I can do! Two squirts of the salt in warm tea, maybe its far from a teaspoon, but its something!! :hugs:

“Edit 6 hours later: NOT a good idea, felt really sick after this tea.”

High quality sea salt and fresh black pepper in warm high-quality bone broth (with a dash of hot sauce) is pretty much the best way to end most days…

Table salt is not going to taste very good in the amounts you need to take. Celtic, Red, or Pink salt will be much easier to deal with, you let it melt in the mouth to quickly absorb it.

Happy fasting.

Table salt has additives to make it not clump whereas the rock salt types as mentioned above don’t and do not have that same bitterness. Switch salts and I think you’ll find a huge difference. Interestingly, I was just at a spa and they were serving warm water with dissolved Himalayan salt along with the usual mint teas and such. A little sign said “are you getting your electrolytes?” they of course sold the salt there and recommended a tsp a day dissolved in water. They had shooter cups, and a quick little shot of it was not unpleasant.

I use the Himalayan or Morton canning salt. The canning salt is cheaper than the Himalayan; it has no additives and is fairly fine ground, and tastes immensely better than table salt. The advantage to the Himalayan, if you can afford it and it’s available, is the other minerals it contains.

I love Canning, and hope to embark on some Keto canning!

I may be a freak, but I keep Celtic sea salt in my car as well as on my table (of course), I dip into the salt all day long when fasting and plenty during a non fast day as well. I just let it melt in my mouth and I find that I crave it. With my high water intake and all of the output, I have to keep the salt on board!

Nope not a freak, purse salt is with me at all times, fasting or not. Sometimes I just need some when I am out and about. I even keep some in my walking pack which is small but has room for a small diy packet of salt.

I have my purse salt, my car salt, and my at home salt which is also sometimes divided into 1st floor and 2nd floor salt.

I so hope himalayan will work for me, I will buy it tomorrow (monday) that will be my third fasting day. And i will be needing something aside water.

I actually think tablesalt in water is a way to make someone purge? My tea-experiment this morning almost ended that way.

Thank you for being helpful. :hugs:

I add salt to the water for tea, keep a small bowl with a teaspoon of salt on the counter and just touch my finger with a dab of salt to my tongue, add it to my water, just all throughout the day. Stopped my headaches and cramps.

Also, any sea salt will be good, and the pink salt, but regular salt will work, too.

One thing to know is that the positive sodium ion competes with other +1 ions on the tongue. This means that any acid, such as white or apple cider vinegar, or lemon or lime juice (think margaritas or tequila shots with lime and salt) will cut the relative perception of saltiness. For example, when I work out fasted I use 1/4 cup acv, 1 tsp pink salt, and 1tbsp swerve mixed up to 1L with water. This is far more palatable to me than salt water.

When I fast for multiple days, I scale that up to a gallon and carry it with me throughout the day. That’s 4 tsp of salt which is essentially isotonic.

Also salt tolerance increases. I stated above I used 1tsp in a liter, but I started with half that amount and increased it as I got used to it.

I bought the Celtics salt too. Keep it in my work truck. Need to get another one for home.

Dean and OP, Morton’s makes a sea salt that has dextrose added to it to keep it from lumping up. Be sure to watch out for some others as well. Costco’s has no additives, so I use that along with pink HSalt, and Real Salt. None of those have iodine, a mineral lacking in American diets, so make sure you get it from other sources.
