Vitamin question - total newbie

(Auden) #1

Hi. I know to take my prescription meds every day I want to take B-complex, B12, B6, and methyl folate while fasting. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

I take B-complex, and usually continue when fasting. I take a bunch of other stuff as well. Worst for me is that my supplements occasionally give me a sour stomach when I take them without food.

While I don’t know for sure about B-complex, etc., some supplements are not absorbed as well if taken on an empty stomach. I’ll leave it to someone with more knowledge on that topic to comment on which ones to watch for.

Bs are water soluble so take with lots of water. The fat soluble ones, A, D, E, and K are truly more absorbable when taken with fat. Bs are present in animal muscle.

(Keep in mind their most bioavailable form is when you actually eat literal animal fat. Or Liver. Or eggs.)

Thanks! I eat tons of fat on keto. Have you done a lot of fasting?

I do one meal a day most days, and on the other days I’ll do 16:8. Always skip breakfast essentially and on days after a rough taekwondo class I’ll likely need a 2nd meal.

I’ve only done a couple 48 hour fasts in the past year, 14 months now. I’m pretty happy with my results on IF so I haven’t been compelled to go into the EF territory if that’s the question.

You can take vitamins on a fast. I used to. I don’t take any vitamins on a fast anymore. I still drink black coffee and tea. I’d like to get off that and just do water eventually.

No need to go crazy! Tea is good!

Only while fasting!

I take a multi-vitamin which has over 100% of the RDA on several vitamins and minerals that I show being deficient on Keto (based on my Fitday nutrition breakout). I also take Magnesium and Vitamin C.

Thanks! I assume it’s a little like starting keto with tweaking and figuring out what works for each person.

I mostly did it in the beginning because I was terrified that fasting would somehow cause a deficiency or imbalance in some place and kill me. I slowly learned that I would not die.

LOL, love this! May I learn the same!
