Very nausea (can it be from going in and out of Ketosis)

I recommend that you head over to Youtube and start watching Dr. Ken Berry’s videos on keto. He’s down to earth, no-nonsense, explains everything in plain English, demystifies a lot of the aspects of the diet that feel confusing, and talks a lot about how to make keto more affordable and accessible for everyone. The one linked below is specific to keto on a budget, but he is a wealth of excellent information across the board, especially for folks just starting out:

Nausea can also be a symptom of high blood pressure, have you checked your blood pressure since you stopped taking the meds?

So longevity is your primary goal. That’s a good one and adopting this way of eating, (woe) for short, certainly is a great step towards that end. Just remember, this is not a get well quick scheme. This process takes time, understanding, dedication, and work. Pump the brakes, do some reading or watch YouTube videos if that’s more your speed. As stated in another post, dr berry is a great resource on YouTube. There are also many others that have their own slant to this woe but they are more similar than different. One bit of advice for getting fed in the meantime. If you are finding yourself confused about nutrition labels, put that box/bag down and head for the outer rows of the grocery store. If you can walk out of there with very few labeled items you’re doing great. Getting rid of processed food should be at the top of the list of things to do. The only labeled foods I typically buy are oils (olive, avocado, coconut), butter, and heavy whipping cream (unsweetened).

Oh and if you haven’t had a physical in a while, get that done if you can along with a blood lipid profile. Its a good baseline.

Like others have said, throw away those pills. Simplify what you eat. Listen to podcasts. This is a good one to start with: http://2ketodudes.com/show.aspx?episode=89
The most important thing you can do is make sure you keep the carbs below 20g each day. At first, your meals should be simple. Eggs cooked in butter. Vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower can be roasted in coconut oil. Have some bacon. A nice steak, Pork belly and chicken thighs. If you are still hungry after eating a meal, then eat some more fat, put a little more butter or olive oil on your food. You should be eating enough food so you don’t feel the need to snack. Ive attached below a keto food list so you have an understanding of what you can eat. If its on the list, then its ok to eat. Stick to the foods on the list until you become fat adapted, which takes 6-8 weeks and means that your body has adapted to using fat as a source of fuel, whether its fat you eat or fat on your body. Add salt to everything and take a magnesium supplement. Just use the first 2 months of eating keto to keeping your food choices very simple and learning everything you can about the basics. Then you venture into more involved/complicated recipes. You may find that you no longer feel the need to make the replacement foods. Here is a list of almost 100 foods you can eat on keto:
Almonds (nuts, oil, butter, and unsweetened milk)
Avocado (fruit and oil)
Beef tallow
Blue cheese
Brazil nuts
Butter
Cheese (cheddar, Colby, feta, mozzarella, provolone, ricotta, Swiss, and others)

To rehash what has already been said, keep carbs under 20g a day. Eat fat when you are hungry and a moderate amount of protein. I would not say throw the pills away but I would let go of them for now until your nausea subsides. I got very nausea the first 2 weeks or so until I was fat adapted. I remember once having dinner and then going to a toy store with the kids and wanting to barf but the feeling went away. Since then I have had it once or twice during fasts but otherwise not. I tend to get a lot of motion sickness usually. I am a couple of years older and have had a lot of success with the diet and feel great. I probably should have tried more salt at the beginning but I did not know. What you ordered are either ketone salts which can cause GI distress. They may have some value but I think you should work on getting fat adapted without this and then down the road if your diet stalls that might be the time to reintroduce these pills

I wasn’t aloud to post for 24 hours…
I can not stop taking the pills or I won’t get my refund.
I have been doing this for a while now. 1st starting taking pills 8/9/18 then when nothing happened, maybe 2x’s or 3x’s after i started the low carb following KETO mostly Matt & Megha… I keep a book and try to write down everything i do, that helped me when i did weight watchers.
THE only thing i’m not doing that i know i should b doing is exercising. AND it’s because i have no energy. it takes everything i have to walk .5 to bus stop n back. i have a tread mill and my dream is to do YOGA… just have no stinking energy at all… i feel like i walk around like a slug…
I know what foods i am aloud n not, just not sure how much i’m aloud n think i overeat, that’s why i can’t lose. Knowing what it means by eating more fat when I feel like I already did.
I believe i am under the 20 carbs (way under sometimes), not the issue, more the issue is how much protein is aloud… Breakfast Lunch N Dinner??? not that i eat 3x’s, but piece of chicken in a salad w/egg and bacon… seems like a lot/too much even… plus your other meal… Oh yeah N the cheese…
LIKE this morning i had another issues w/my blood pressure…YES I said it… LET IT GO… work in progress… BUT i had a cup of tea before i realized it. then i was putting peanut butter in container for work and i licked the spatula clean. I felt better after that. Came to work, still knew i wasn’t feeling right cause of blood pressure. Ate celery w/cream cheese and peanut butter. Then I got some decaf green tea n lemon for my head. had some almonds.
Just had another stick of celery w/peanut butter cause i’m feeling funny. No energy to heat up my bacon ch burger i brought.
I now know that my lack of energy is probably due to my blood pressure more than my lack of carbs. and it may be preventing the fats to fuel my energy.
I will continue to do low carbs, not sure how strict I am going to be until i get my bp under control.
THANX everyone for your comments and thoughts.

lol…done reporting on the stupid pills… so mad i got scammed again!!!

You must realize that your health is more important than those scammy pills or some refund.

Research Keto on DietDoctor.com and do a clean Keto diet, for your health. The cravings will stop when you stop feeding them. Try to avoid keto junk food (replacements for high carb foods.) It is best to eat clean. Your body will make its own ketones, for free!

(Chrissy) #32

Donna the pills are all natural. They are not doing ANYTHING to me or for me, I think they are placebo… lmao… but in order to get my refund i have to take for at least 2 months… just more of their scam… I know, I know… I don’t have to really take them, how would they know??? well how would they know if i really lost weight either… i am hoping we r both honest…

I think one of my biggest health issues w/KETO is all the salt. I need to work on that. I did just buy a diuretic to help get rid of it… and i do drink BAI so i am getting my electrolytes… my vitamins are way more than my meds were and i like that… JUST pray i don’t have to go back on meds!!! worst nightmare…

(Running from stupidity) #33

So is cyanide. I’m not super-convinced that it’s good for you, despite being “all natural.” #provemewrong

(Ellie) #34

I’ll echo a lot of the other posts here.
Take the pills if you must, but ideally don’t. I’m not sure why you think they would be honest now when then have sold you a pill like this in the first place.
I would flush them and then try to claim the refund in a months time, but not really expect to get it.
In the meantime…
You like coffee in the morning, so try coffee with heavy whipping cream in the mornings
Then keep other food simple, don’t worry about the breads and other things, just go for bacon, eggs, meats, cheese and salads if you want.
So maybe a chicken, avocado, bacon and sour cream salad for lunch and a steak and zucchini cooked in butter with a cream and pepper sauce for dinner.
If you eat each meal until you at full, and try not to snack, you’ll find your sort it will drop naturally.

You sound pretty stressed about the whole thing. Take a breath, and keep it simple.

(Chrissy) #35

omgosh people forget the pills please
its more bout not having energy from being used to carbs I think…
but most important right now is that I was not having blood pressure issues until I started doing the KETO low carb lifestyle
thx

Actually, setting the pills aside, I thought the question in the post title was interesting: Does or can going in and out of ketosis cause nausea for some people?

I don’t know the answer to that. But over the past few days, my wife and I have done some traveling and have eaten a few meals that were less than keto. My wife ate enough carbs at supper one night to mostly likely kick her out of ketosis. She complained of nausea around bedtime but never really did get sick. It passed pretty quickly but I found it interesting that we had just eaten a higher carb meal.

I didn’t have the same nausea even though I ate more carbs, too. I seem not to be as bothered by the occasional indisgression as she is. But it was only one meal. I’m not absolutely sure I was even kicked out of ketosis, no measurements were taken. What I did notice about my indisgression was that I was very thirsty for the next 24 hours or so. Guessing those carbs were “calling for water”.

Perhaps it’s all nothing, but it is at least a bit fascinating to me how this can affect different people differently.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #37

You know you body better than I do, of course… but I’d be careful with diuretics. The reason we need more salt on a keto diet is that the kidneys work more efficiently and naturally flush out more salt.

I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time. I hope either this works for you once you get it balanced out, or that you find what does work for you. You’ve gotten a lot of good advice, especially to take the time to breathe and do your research. Your goal is a great one!

(Diane) #38

I’ve noticed this as well. When I start getting really thirsty, I suspect one of two things. That I inadvertently ate something that threw me out of ketosis (and then I’m compelled to check my blood ketone levels, if I’m at home). An increased thirst (and subsequent weight gain due to water retention) also happens when I ingest certain foods that are inflammatory for me, but don’t kick me out of ketosis. I’ve noticed this with regular mayo and Litehouse blue cheese salad dressing (I suspect this is due to the canola or soybean oil in them) and when I eat Boar’s Head smoked Gouda,(damn it)!!

Eating the Keto way should not involve purchases of special pills/scams/foods. Fat, protein, carbs… all found in the grocery store. Eating this way makes me think of how I ate as a child. We were not allowed treats or soda unless it was a special occasion. I love this eating. I love using heavy cream in my coffee, I love real butter, and never eating low fat crap again in this life time. There are no special things you have to buy to eat this way. I am sorry that you lost money though, that makes me angry with you. Thank you for sharing.

I came on here for support…forget that…you people are MEAN!!! I guess everyone is a practicing doctor and they know better…

None of u listen to me, u only made ur own judgements and changed my whole story!!!
I started the stupid pills way before I even knew about KETO LOW CARB lifestyle. I only started trying the low carb because of the pills!!! I was fine when it was just the pill, wasn’t sick just not losing weight.

I had been on blood pressure meds until May when I lost my job. I wasn’t on meds from then June till NOW September and had no issues until I started eating low carbs (a lot of fatty foods—bacon—meat—cheese).
MY OWN practicing doctor had said a year ago when I asked about my nauseous said that it was residual from smoking pot not from my BLOOD PRESSURE… she doesn’t know and neither do any of you practicing docs… so please stop being so judgmental and opinionated when U don’t know… this is a learning curve for everyone cause everyone is different and it will affect people differently than it affected U.

THX for making my quest for support turn into a nitemare that made my blood pressure worse and made me give up on this KETO lifestyle cause just like all ur different opinions, that’s all I’ve been finding on this keto since I started looking into it back in the middle August…

Ruina, I thought I knew my body until all of this… I have never been this sick. when I went to get blood pressure checked the pharmacist recommended the diuretic cause i use to take a water pill w/my blood pressure meds. i only took 1 out of the 3 a day before getting so sick i haven’t taken anything or eaten anything since. Well i tried to eat but it just came right back up. Unfortunately, i think i am going to have to go back on pharmaceuticals to get my pressure under control… :frowning:

(Chrissy) #42

reading more of the post n not all of U r mean… but u still only hear what u want too. I get everyone thinking it’s the pills but i wasn’t sick when it was just the pills.
I am sick now thou n they r thinking its all the fat… everyone is different and everyone can’t handle the same as everyone…just saying…
