Vegetarian traveling to Australia

(Trisha Maroni) #1

Any other keto vegetarians? With advise for traveling? I’m traveling from the states to Australia and I’m going to be there for three weeks. Instead of picking a location and staying we’re going to be renting an RV and road tripping, which means I’ll have a difficult time sourcing restaurants in advance or preparing my own food. I plan on packing a lot of various types of keto bars but beyond that any advice on what I can bring with me through multiple airports?
(My friends are pretty used to my nonsense, my entire carry on last year when we went to Bora Bora (pre keto) was just food, and I bought 3 bottles of liquor at the airport, because I was not going to pay the inflated resort prices for food.)
This year I am struggling with what food options I could pack and take with me.

I travel a lot for work but not vegetarian so some of what I pack wouldn’t apply to you. Some things off the top of my head you can carry on:

Pepitas or other nuts
Powdered MCT oil

Not sure about cheese traveling internationally - might not be allowed.

You will likely have problems taking any food into Australia… they have sniffer dogs at the airport and food is not allowed in. I even had an apple confiscated at Sydney airport that was in my bag.

Have a read here.

I’m very new, what is powdered MCT Oil? Can it be a meal?

Fruit they will always take from you going to any country, even if you got on the plane. They classify produce the same as drugs or weapons. :woman_shrugging:

Not a nutritious one, basically just a good fat source from MCT’s.

I don’t even know what I could eat to make it work as a keto vegetarian. What good protein foods are there besides nuts eggs and dairy? :worried:

Most supermarkets have some form of keto bars, there is generally a vegetarian option on most menus.

There are Facebook groups that are Australian specific (Keto - the Aussie way, Keto Cafes and restaurants in Australia) and there are keto cooks if you decide to use your RV kitchen (Mad Creations, WTF). Join a few.

The major supermarket chains are Woolworths.com.au Coles.com.au - check out the keto bar options

Avocados are in season, the dairy options are plentiful, there are eggs (boil a batch and put them in the fridge). Use the Facebook pages for hints on local products you can pick up easily at the supermarket - plan a brunch feast of eggs, avocado spinach, mushrooms? Be prepared to be occasionally stumped if you’re a distance from the coast - unless you’re pescatarian and like salmon or barramundi you may not find a pub or restaurant with many vegetarian options. My default in this case would be veggies, avocado and a sneaky portion of butter (bring your own if needed).

If you end up occasionally fasting, then that’s not too bad.

We have Big Head beer (low carb)

Tofu, soy? Supposedly, you can combine certain things like rice and beans to get a “complete” protein, but that wouldn’t be keto.

@ctviggen Soy is beans, but worse than others. Outside KETO it’s easier to get protein being vegetarian but still inefficient. Plant protein sources are inferior. :cowboy_hat_face:

I recommend checking out this channel. Perhaps before you set out on your road trip, once in Australia, you can stop and stock up at a grocery store.

I would not know how a vegetarian could get B-12 naturally without a supplement (from a land animal) or actually eating dirt?

If I were a Vegetarian I would be hardcore (no holds barred) and I would be eating dirt and I’m not joking!

If I wanted natural I would not half step it?

I do take soil based probiotics so there may be B-12 in that to?

The analog B-12 vegetarians claim they are getting their B-12 from is not the real stuff like from certain species of Seaweed, Spirulina, Chlorella or any other plant based source because with analog you still end up with a B-12 deficiency?

I wonder how long it takes to drain your natural supply of B-12, maybe self-catabolism from fasting after depleting your natural supply?

Thanks that’s extremely helpful advise. It’s good to know I can at least buy some bars to get me through. I’m going to check out those grocery stores and see what I can plan in advance.
Thank you!

That channel is pretty adorable, thanks!
