Veg/Pescatarian- question re: protein

#1

Hello

This is my first post here, I’ve been lurking and learning…

So, all this talk about bacon and steaks. I don’t eat meat, but all this praise of it in Keto-world has occasionally made me question this decades-long choice, but I digress.

When I first started Keto in Jan of this year, I immediately realized I was getting too much protein, from fish primarily, especially if eaten more than once a day. For example, a 6.5 oz can of tuna fish has on average about 45 g of protein, that’s more than half my allotment for the day according to my carb manager. If I add some smoked salmon for snacks or have shrimp or fillet, it’s way over. I suspect it’s why I wasn’t losing anything.

I know about how it needs some time, especially since I’m only looking to lose 10-15 lbs etc etc etc. But, my question to you all is how can you be eating so much meat everyday and not be going over your macros?

Thanks in advance

Everyone’s needs are different. But 45 g of protein seems at the very low end. What is your actual protein goal? How tall are you? What is your lean body mass? I am 5"8’, female, aiming for between 60-80g protein a day. I eat about 4-5 ounces of meat at each of two meals a day.

I choose fatty meat rather than lean meat to hit my macro’s.

I naturally only eat once a day

The one-meal-a-day thing is something I’m striving for…

Does fatty meat have less protein? Because ‘fatty’ fish like salmon still has very high protein

My macro for protein is 85 a day, but aiming to lower that some.

Eat smaller portions of protein and increase your fats to achieve sateity. Fats are your fuel, protein is to keep your body built properly, but it’s not for fuel.

Kinda. 100g of fatty meat will have less protein and more fat than 100g of lean meat.

In the below example, Salmon and Ribeye (the fattiest cuts of fish or beef) per 100g offer more fat and less protein, therefore you can eat more.

Tuna & ham, not so much.

As @LizinLowell says, fat = fuel.

That’s my protein macro too. 2MOD is the only way I don’t go over whilst eating a satiating portion of protein. I started tracking macros again the other day and realized I was eating too much on a three meal day :face_with_hand_over_mouth::shushing_face:.

Eggs are literally a superfood. They have all the nutrients to make a chicken. IMO, they are the best single food for a human to eat. Cheese, butter, and coconut oil are also good for sources of fat.

Eggs rock! I eat between 3-5 a day.
