Using breath mints while fasting?

(Kevin) #1

This may sound like an odd question but would sugar free breath mints be ok to use while fasting? I am currently on the backside of a 48 hour fast but my breath is kinda funky so I wanted to use some breath saver mints I have in my desk but wasn’t sure if they might negate the effects of my fast, anyone know for sure?

Thanks

The sweetener wouldn’t be ideal and would cause a blood sugar reaction in some people

Peppermint tea

When I had braces, I carried around disposable toothbrushes with paste embedded in the bristles. How about keeping these in your desk:

Thats what I’m worried about. :frowning:

What about some sort of mouth wash?

I heard a good idea on a fasting podcast once: a small spray bottle with a peppermint oil and water mixture. Use it as a breath spray. I keep one in my car at all times now. It’s like a poor man’s Binaca. I’ve tried to eliminate gum both because of the artificial sweeteners messing with my hormones and because I’ve heard that fake sweeteners are bad for gut health. It’s worth trying.

Right! I love peppermint tea & spearmint.

I most likely depends upon what type of sugar free mint you are planning to take (and how many you are planning to consume).

What type are you looking at, and what are the ingredients?

Of course everyone is different but I use Breathsavers Protect Spearmint with no spike in blood sugars

I would ask if you are consuming enough water during your fast, I have read that consuming more water helps with breath.

Lots of other great ideas here in the event that water consumption isn’t the issue.

Great suggestion
Thanks

I’m going to try this

Mind sharing the brand or your recipe / ratio please?:blush:

I just discovered that Breathsavers cause my insulin to spike. My bg actually goes down when I eat them, I start getting hungry, end up eating the whole roll. Have no idea if it works this way for anyone else, but I won’t go near the sucralose/ace k sweeteners again.

Thank you for pointing this out! Far too often people associate no effect on blood glucose to no effect on insulin secretion. There is a big difference. It’s been said many times here but they are not the same thing. Protein is a good example of this, eating a big steak won’t do much to blood sugar but you can be sure that you’ll be pumping out insulin like crazy.

I use this in a small spray bottle at a ratio of probably 20:1 (water to peppermint extract). You can get the little spray bottles at the drug store in the travel section. I don’t think the ratio is crucial to be honest. Sometimes when I’m fasting I swish and spit if I’m really trying to do “water only” but I doubt that’s crucial either.
