Urine burns during urinating and no UTI

(LUIS) #1

Hi all! I have been doing keto for 2 months now. lost 24 lbs and feeling great… only one issue… my urine started burning really bad … I am a male … went to the Doc. no urinary tract infection… I have been reading and it says it happens when your urine is too acidic… which happens with certain foods. Has it happened to any of you and how can I fix it . I have been eating a lot more greens which then to be alkalinic but I still have it. The temporary fix is baking soda but it only lasts a few hours with relief and then it’s back

How is your protein intake? I had issues early on which I’ve since come to believe were protein related. That was before I knew keto was actually a thing so was eating higher protein.

It might be related to keto rash. I’d try two things. First drink much more water throughout the day to start. If this will work it should work within a day so it’s a quick test. If it doesn’t I’d try the cure Meghan Ramos recommends for keto rash which is to temporarily increase your carbs with 1/2 cup of berries taken twice daily (strawberries or raspberries, or blackberries). Again, you should start getting relief rather quickly. If that works, you can then slowly reduce the berries as you get more adapted.

When you have your salads, are you adding vinegar based salad dressing? Or adding lemon juice? That could do it.
Aside:, although it sounds keto related, did they check for other things like tiny amounts of blood in urine?

I’m eating around 20% protein …70% fats

(LUIS) #6

yes I am adding vinegar to all my salads but that’s not new… I always had

(Allie) #7

What’s that in grams?

(LUIS) #8

65 grams

Are you overexercising?

(LUIS) #11

no… twice a week mild exercise

(Omar) #12

yes

It happened to me .

But please note that I am not recommending by any means that your burning sensation is the same as mine.

The doctor said no infliction. I made the decision to quit keto. Actually you will find many posts here me asking about the burning sensation, kidney pain, even testicles pain.

I took antibiotic any way. I know it is not a good practice to take antibiotic without doctor prescription, but the testicles pain and the burning sensation was bad I I had to do something.

I think what happened is that I had some kind of prostate infection and the antibiotic killed it.

The burning sensation went away almost immediately while the testicles pain gradualy reduced over three months.

It took me 3 months to decide to take antibiotic. And if I wait for doctor appointments and lab results and all that crap, the infliction of the prostate is extremely difficult to fight as the amount of blood there is little.

The truth I do not know what was with me but I know that the antibiotic fixed me

I thought people would perhaps make more educated guesses, less stabs in the dark. Considering this is a real health problem you are going through.

Anyways, I’ve looked at some studies. The only ones on the ketogenic diet concern epileptic children (go figure), but a common side effect of putting them on this diet was acidic urine. I mean, when you are in ketosis, the ketones produced are acidic, and thus make your blood acidic. This is then dealt with by your kidneys, which filter out those acidic compounds from your blood into your urine. If I were you I’d consider a diet change, because this is a precursor to stone formation… Which, ouch. This may sound quite hippy, but seriously consider eating more alkaline foods such as vegetables.

Look after yourself!

according to the article in the link, ketagonic diet does not make the blood acidic. It is a misconception.

There unfortunately have been many cases of diabetics developing ketoacidosis (acidic blood) when ketosis goes too far. Nevertheless, even if not experiencing ketoacidosis, ketones are still filtered from the blood into the urine, causing acidic urine.

interesting do you have the data about the ketosis causing ketoacidosis?

(Ron) #17

Yes, please show me the science. Or at least some documented cases supporting your statement.

To make my urine less acidic, I put a squeeze of lemon in my water. I also drink carbonated spring water.

so far I am drinking a ton of water and the burning has improved significantly. It is not completely gone. I also started eating slightly higher carbs and making kale smoothies. I am not concerned about kidney injury. Keto does not damage the kidneys. I have a list of acidic and alkalinic foods… unfortunately cheese and most protein is acidic… Apple cider… lemon… limes are actually alkalinic not acidic. Taking antibiotics is not the solution.

I am guessing your doctor did a urinalysis in addition to testing specifically for an infection. A urine pH is a standard part of a urinalysis, so maybe just as a way to ascertain the pH is what’s causing the problem (and not some other medical issue), ask your doctor what it was.
