This happens to me even after 9 months on keto when I’m spilling off a lot of ketones in my urine due to being a little dehydrated. I like Bulletproof Brain Octane and Perfect Keto collagen mix in my coffee. If I drink too much of it before drinking a little water I get the burning.
Urine burns during urinating and no UTI
This could possibly be one time when keto urine strips would be useful; the darker the strip, the more acetoacetate in your urine, the more acetoacetate in your urine, the more acidic it will be, the more acidic it is, the more likely to make you uncomfortable. – I also agree that more hydration is probably key, which you’ve already discovered.
Yep, I always have dark urine strips when I get that feeling. If I only drink 1 cup of coffee with the collagen which ready contains MCT along with the stronger brain octane I’m fine. Sometimes I just don’t think about it and over indulge.
Luis, how old are you? I guess it does sound like the urine was actually too acidic, but I wonder.
And here I have been blaming my discomfort on the usual suspect from being post menopausal. Come to think of it, that symptom began after starting my very low carb diet about 2 and a half years ago. Damn. It’s always something. And I thought those ketones were my friends.
Hi everyone ! I am 37… here is my update… bought the keto urine strips and found I was all they way purple… deep into ketosis… I added a few strawberries and blueberries to my green shakes and drank plenty of water and the burning went away… Very painful at first… I am pain free and maintaining moderate ketosis instead of deep… I keep losing weight I’m down
Are you eating mushrooms or fermented foods? That can cause candida infection. Candida can mimic a UTI.
I just want to thank you to all the people posting here especially Keto4life17. I will tell my story to hopefully help others who may be experiencing the same thing.
I have done keto a few times and never had any problems. This time I added intermittent fasting. I also went militant about no sugar, starches and very little carbs. The results were amazing. My mind and body reacted very well. I was also supplementing with probiotics, a daily supplement and fish oil.
I am an athletic fairly lean person to begin with. I dropped about 10 pounds but I wanted to burn off the visceral fat. After about 2.5 months, I started feeling this weird burning that resembled a UTI. I was eating a lot of protein i.e. meat, chicken and what I thought was enough vegetables.
I could not figure out what was going on with me. I had this weird urgency to pee and burning when I peed. I immediatly thought I had a UTI. I tried to flush out with water and OTC remedies along with apple cider vinegar. This seemed to make it worse. My wife finally urged me to go to the doctors.
I went to the doc and tested and there was NO UTI. The idiot doctor looked at me and said we can explore other options. I asked what they were and she said well you might have an STD. I am a loyal husband. I have been with my wife for 8 years. She is pregnant and she kind of side eyed me like I was some phlandering husband. I told her unless my prego wife is getting some side action. this would be impossible. I was annoyed, embarassed and left.
I continued to stay on my militant keto diet and fasting not connecting this might be the problem. I upped the cranberry juice, vitamin c, etc. Little did i know I was making it worse. Two weeks later I was dying. My wife got me into see a specialist. I went in and was seen by this old school doc. He did some labs and they all came back negative. He also gave me the narliest prostate exam I have ever had. His solution was shooting me with two shots of antibiotics in the ass. I am NOT a fan of them but the pain I was feeling made me desperate.
Later that day I started feeling better. I thought well maybe I had some weird bacteria infection. Next few days I had some temp relief. I continued my strict keto and by day 4 I was back to square one. I started stressing out because I was miserable. My wife being the gem that she is started googling around. She stumbled onto this forum. I read a few other threads on kidney pain and keto as well. The light bulb went off in my head. This has to be connected to my diet.
I went deep down the rabbit hole on this. I had ordered some UTI and keto test strips and I was tesing negative for UTI. This is where i noticed my PH of my urine was at a 5. As I started to read more about my purine diet and how over time the blood becomes more acidic and the kidneys work over time to filter it out into your urine and this causes acidic urine which burns like a MOFO. I was pissing acid pee and over time I had inflamed my bladder and urethra.
I immediately drank some baking soda. 1/2 teaspoon in 8 oz of water. My PH came up from a 5 to 6.5. I then did more research and found that Potassium CItrate pulls uric acid fromt he blood and alkanizes urine. I got my hands on some pills. I also upped my carbs and ate citris fruits i.e. pineapple, oranges, strawberries as well as bananas. I was seeing results. The burning was at bay, but my system was taxed from being acidic for so long.
The next morning I woke and again my PH had dropped in the night and I was pissing fire. I immediately drank baking soda and took a potasium citrate pill and boom my PH shot back up. When my pee was alkaline around 7.0 there was no pain. I started learning about uric acid and lactic acid build up which is the perfect storm for kidney stones and gout.
I felt stupid to be honest. I caused this. I should of NOT been so militant and eaten more fruits and vegies. I decided to take a break from keto. I cut out all purine foods i.e. meats especially. I went to green juices and continued testing. Within a few days I felt back to myself. The acidc environment I created inflamed my bladder and urinary tract.
I am not selling anything but I found a few things that literally saved me. I never needed the antibiotics which really pissed me off.
-
Drinking baking soda. I hated the extra salt in it and quickly found tri-alkali by pure encapsulations. I take a scoop before bed and it keeps things akaline.
-
Green drinks i.e. juice, smoothies, etc.
-
Super Green which is another alkalinizing drink that sooths the system. 1 scoop in the morning works well.
-
Eating mainly vegetables and fruits, lentils. NO MEAT.
-
Testing your urine PH to learn how your body works and what it reacts to.
-
Ionic water - the base PH is 9.5
7 Cut out cranberry juice etc.
I will go back to keto and fasting soon. It took months for my system to become acidic like this. Next time I will not be so strict. I will also pay more attention to my ketones and PH levels. The only reason I am writing this is because this thread saved my ass and I wanted to add to it from my experience. Get yourself some test strips and pay attention to your numbers.
@Aguan I am wondering if by any chance you were perhaps sodium deficient during this process. I ask because the body regulates sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium by means of interlocking processes, so keeping one in balance tends to keep the others in line, as well. Sodium is the mineral most affected by going keto, since the kidneys speed up their excretion of it (or, more accurately, they return to the normal rate) in the absence of carbohydrate in the diet. If you weren’t working to keep your salt intake to about 2-1/2 teaspoons a day, it might explain why the sodium bicarbonate helped you.
I think it was a combination of things. I will increase my salt intake when I jump back into keto. I will also monitor my levels more closely. I “thought” I was on top of things. I am just thankful my wife stumbled upon this forum. I appreciate you feedback.
Some possibilities? Sounds more likely that it could be renal stones? If so try “stone root” or “stone breaker.”
- Does a ketogenic diet increase your risk of gout? There is a short-term increased risk of gout flares when initially entering into nutritional ketosis due to the competitive inhibition of ketones on kidney excretion of uric acid (Veech, 2004). This is transient, and once one is through the keto-adaptation process, the long-term risk of gout decreases (Hussain, 2012). - By Dr. Stephen Phinney and the Virta Team*
- Seafood: Although it is recommended that a healthy diet includes a lot of fish, people who have gout should be aware that some seafood can increase levels of uric acid in the blood, and may make gout worse. High purine content: Anchovies , codfish, haddock , herring , mackerel , mussels, sardines, scallops , trout . …More
This is really good info and one of the things I learned about when I went down the rabbit hole trying to hack my body. The acidic environment going on was the perfect storm for stones. I drank so much water that I may of passed any stones in my system. Many peeps say this can’t happen on keto. Uhm well it can. It just might not happen to you.
I do believe @PaulL is right about my salt intake. I was no way near 2.5 teaspoons. I believe it would of helped me retain more water versus just purging it all and helped retain electrolytes.
I was eating a very high protein diet of purine foods at the time. I was basically 80% carnivore. 20% Fruit, vegies and some dairy. I would then fast on top of that. This combination just adds to acidity. I was drinking a ton of water but my PH was in 5-6 range.
As soon as I was able to focus on keeping my body more alkaline the symptoms resolved. The tri alkai and super greeen have kept me at 7-8. Reading through the various stories above I concur bumping up carbs, adding more fruits and green leafy vegies and cutting out purine foods really helped.
The main take away for me in all this is that everyone’s keto experience is different. Your body might be fine where as someone else might not be on the same program. The key is pay attention to ketones, PH, blood sugar, etc. The devil is in the details.
I think you guys may have saved my sanity, health and love life all in one go! I just stumbled on this forum after googling my symptoms. I have been on keto since July 2018 and weirdly never connected my symptoms with this woe until just now.
I too have problems when peeing and although the symptoms were somewhat similar to cystitis, I knew it wasn’t that as I used to get that a lot when I was younger. This is very specific and a different sort of pain, especially when urinating, but it also means I can’t bear any sort of physical touch too, so it’s not doing my marriage any good, although my husband has been a gem.
I know I should drink more water, I also know I probably don’t eat enough salt. What you guys have mentioned above makes perfect sense.
I will try the bicarb of soda. I will also up my fruit carbs as I don’t eat fruit at all. I have plenty of green veg and perhaps too large a portion of protein, so I’ll cut back on the protein and also the chunks of cheese I snack on!
I have already lost 35lbs but I still have another 28 or so pounds to go so I think I’ll take a slower route and consider upping the healthy carbs.
I am so grateful to have stumbled onto this forum. It all makes perfect sense now. Thank you
I know this is a relatively old thread. I hope everyone who has been having acidity problems are ok now. I was wondering, Aguan, if you started gaining weight when you changed your diet to more fruit and less protein.
This helped my husband as he went to the Dr with the same ailment a week ago.
Although acidic, the synergism of digestion kombucha becomes an alkaline forming food .
