Ultra Endurance Athlete Starting Out

Hi! Just wanted to swing by and say how much I’m enjoying this thread. Thanks for all your thoughts.

Exercise is a big part of my life and although I do nowhere near the volume you do most people think I do too much, it’s nice to read about someone who really does do extreme exercise

At 52 I’m super glad that I still have the energy and motivation to exercise at all.

Keep up the good work.

How’s ZC going @Nathan_Toben?

(Nathan Toben) #103

Hmm it’s going okay. I ended up fasting until dinner last night for about 28hrs. Then i ate 2lbs of ribeye which was just so satisfying. I was still slightly hungry afterwards but i think only mentally not physically. I haven’t been sleeping well since ZC and my energy is low. But my digestion and inflammation are better. I hope that i can keep getting that real deep satisfaction from good cuts of meat and Carnivore turns out to be possible for an ultra-endurance athlete. i have my doubts but i’m just so lost in the sea of food-fear that this is my path.

I hear you!

I’m not sure hpw to approach your running. I can’t get the energy too either. But there are a couple pf examples out there of people doing it. So I don’t know.

@oward12 yeah…though i do not intend to isolate myself from the rest of the community, it seems in my progress to find what works for me, my situation is developing into a very particular case :pensive::pensive::pensive:. When i feel beaten by my illnesses and disorders, sometimes i lose sight of the successes i have had and i feel out of all orbit, adrift in a morass of nutritional existentialism. It may be that i will never be able to fully integrate an effective nutritional strategy for racing ultra marathons, given my hang ups. It may be that my adaption period is just taking a longer time than others, or due to my lifestyle, i am experiencing higher than healthy cortisol levels or even Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

I just ate a 1lb ribeye with 1 lb of bacon on top of it. 3lbs of meat for the day. I could probably eat a little more too but i think i am full.

I doubt i am in ketosis due to high protein intake but i think you once said that you thought protein estimates for athletic ketonians are often underestimated. I do think that i am benefiting from as much as 300g of protein some days, like when i have a speed session in the morning and then ride 50 miles on the bike for work. Unlike some carnivores, I seem to do well keeping my fat intake still high.

Sometimes though, when my stomach is settled and i am not hungry, and i may be a bit tired, but all systems are sort of “A Go”, i am visited by a temporary confidence that says, “yes nathan, this is you. This is what works for you. You are aligned and progressing.”

Who knows though, how are you doing @oward12? Has the effects of food poisoning moved completely out? Are you still ZC or Carnivore? Back to keto? Off the wagon? I hope you are feeling more grounded these days.

Bloke! How many others here are doing what you’re doing? You are right out on the edge, and so OF COURSE your situation is going to be significantly different to most peoples. You are at the very far right edge of the bell curve with the other outliers like Shawn Baker, Zack Bitter, etc.

Doing elite things means not being “normal” in many ways. Embrace it. And keep reporting in, it’s fascinating.

@juice dang man, thanks for giving me that reminder. you’re right. this is what i’ve chosen to do and what i am passionate about. i got to embrace it and recognize that i’m destined for many more mistakes and that those mistakes are data points on the learning curve and not always notches on a leaning belt or ribbon across a finish line. Like it is said in AA, we never graduate from this plight, it is having grace in the process that counts. I haven’t had much grace of late because i’ve let pity take up residence for too long but i’m feeling the lights come back on and the stove burners simmering thick. cut. bacon.

I’m not convinced by it. I want to be. But I get serious fatigue and dry lips. My digestion is awful. Sleep is pretty rubbish. I suspect raw meat is what we’re designed for. It saves most of the minerals, enzymes and vitamins but I just can’t stomach it. I’ve tried but I just can’t. Thinking about going to an OMAD style wholefood approach. It’ll be difficult but I’ll probably feel better in the long run. I can’t work this shit out what so ever.

Do you drink coffee @Nathan_Toben?

(Nathan Toben) #111

Yes I do, about 6 cups a day.
