Hi, I’m just learning my around this forum so if you see this on another thread please forgive the multiple post…anyway, I have been on this journey to reverse my diabetes for 5+ years now and have been medication free for 2 (due to a Palio lifestyle) My numbers drastically started going up again so I started a Keto lifestyle about a month ago and have hit ketosis fairly quickly (I’m sure because I was 1/2 way there due to Palio)? I have seen incredible results (with a few keto bumps along the way) I’ve been doing some research about intermediate fasting. I really want to do this but I’m caught up with the idea of having to eat three meals a day with two snacks in between in order to keep my blood sugars stable. On keto, I’ve cut down to 3 meals no snacks because frankly I’m just not hungry. My question is, Has anybody else with type II diabetes fast and if so how is it going, could you give me some tips along the way that won’t make me so fearful of doing this? (Or even if I should) How did your blood sugars fair on IF? Thanks advanced!
Type II & IF?
Hi Inowa, I fast all the time and I’m type II on insulin. I guess the question is, are you on any medications. You do want to avoid going low. As always said here, you should consult with a doctor, and I’m not one. That being said. I do away with all meds when I do an extended fast. Typically my blood sugar does creep up when fasting. I have some theories why, but regardless, I will take a very tiny dose if I get too high. Your body will do a great job of stabilizing if you are not on meds. If you are, you risk going low and it will be impossible to maintain the fast. The real goal here is to lower your insulin levels as much as possible. One of the best ways to do that is fasting. I’m currently doing extended fasting, but when I do IF, I lower my meds. It takes some experimentation, and if you’re not comfortable with that, you should definitely talk to a IF/Keto friendly doctor. I don’t have that luxury.
Did that make any sense?
Yes, total sense… I have been off ALL of meds for 2 years now and was told by my doctor that I don’t have to worry about going hypo when Off meds but was concerned that IF could mess up blood sugars stability…I will give it a try and keep close eye. Thank you!
You bet. There is a monthly string on the fasting section where lots of people report on their fasting and ask questions. Good luck!
Hi Inowa. I’m type II and on met 500 x1 a day. I have been doing IF for the last 3 weeks so not long, but I haven’t had any issues with my glucose going too low. My sugars have improved a lot in the morning and they only get up to between 100-110 after meals. I’ve take random glucose tests and the results have been consistently stable.
