Type II diabetic for 12 yrs, NOW I'M NOT!

Ok y’all, I’m another living proof that type II diabetes can be reversed! A year ago I started the change in my eating habits. I read Wheat Belly by WIlliam Davis MD, and by the time I got to chapter 3, I immediately gave up grains and gluten of any kind. Still ate some fruit. When I started, my blood glucose readings had been in the high 200s, and after a couple of months it had went down a whole 100 pts to the 170s range. Of course I still needed to go down another 100 points. More work to be done.

Enter Keto five months after going grain/gluten free. I learned about it from a friend at work after she heard about my efforts. I was stuck and she told me this would help. So I started to dabble in it in November 2017… wasn’t much of a change to make at that point, basically cut way down on the fruits but I still had a little fruit, and watch label ingredients more closely for vegetable oils and hidden starches. That got me down to the blood glucose readings in the 120s within a month. Woot! Then she told me about intermittent fasting. At first I was ‘no way’ I have had enough years of feeling hungry and miserable, I won’t go back to that. BUT, the 2 Keto Dudes and The Obesity Code podcasts set me straight and I had to try it. And that’s what got me into the blood glucose readings in the 70s. Hallalujah, pass the bullets! (just a saying) LOL

So, now my HgA1C is 5.4!!! It was up at 11.4 at the beginning of my efforts a year ago. I’ve dropped 6 whole points in a year’s time. It took a year. Some people get to brag that it only took them 60 days, maybe 90. So I had to be patient. It wasn’t easy, my mind wanted this to “be done already!” But I kept seeing improvements, and I realized that it would just take me longer than them, but it would happen.

So for those of you still dealing with type II diabetes, hopefully this inspires you to keep trying, keep calm and keto on folks!! You keep up with keto, and you tweak it as necessary, and you keep getting the blood labs drawn, and you will see the progress! I have only lost 30 lbs during this time. I did not have to lose the magic 50+ lbs to become non-diabetic. And trust me I am morbidly obese… I have another 80 lbs to lose. My target weight is 130. So we will see how the next couple of years goes. I estimated that because I was so unhealthy, that it may take a good 5 years to lose this weight. I hope it doesn’t take quite that long, but I am patient. This is for my health, and to hopefully prolong my life, and to have an end of life that is peaceful and not hooked up to all kinds of machines or waste away slowly as I have witnessed just about all my family do before me. It’s so heartbreaking. What’s more heartbreaking is now knowing what can help people and they can’t do it becuase they don’t believe in it, they think it’s just the next fad diet and that it’s too hard - they can’t possibly give up all their wonderful carbs (addiction). Just a year ago, I was one of them. Until I wasn’t.

I was diagnosed in September 2006. In August 2018, it is now reversed. But it only took 1 year of actual real work to fix it. And now it’s not work at all, it’s just the way, and when, I eat. :+1::grin:

Congrats, I’m sure your story will inspire others. Continued good luck on your journey.

What a great success story, Jeanne!!! My husband was “pre-diabetic” and now his doctor says he no longer is at all after only 6 months of keto. All these success stories are so inspiring for all of us!

That is SO wonderful to hear! I love hearing success stories and now he is one too!! It’s hard to believe I’d be able to inspire anyone else but if my story can help anyone at all, I’m happy to shout it from the rooftops!

This is the kind of story that keeps people motivated and overcomes the belief that diabetes is incurable. Your post just goes to show it isn’t! My first official A1C test is in 2 weeks. Can’t wait.

Awesome, I know you’ll see improvements. You can’t not have them on keto. Just remember it is a journey.

Congrats!

I’m also a T2. I used to use insulin and other medications. I no longer use any of them, and my A1c has dropped from 7.3 to 5.2.

However, I wouldn’t say I’ve reversed my diabetes. I’m successfully treating it with a keto WOE. A more effective treatment than drugs ever were. But if I stopped my keto WOE, I would show the symptoms of T2 diabetes again.

Actually, I find it sad, because almost every medication for T2 says something like, “…when used with diet and exercise…”. So what is the medication doing? :frowning:

I understand the reluctance to say cured, because that means even if you eat ‘poorly’ again it wouldn’t come back. That is why I say reversed and not cured. It’s not necessarily a permanent condition because I can re-trigger it if I start consuming a lot of carbs again.

And yeah, besides Metformin, I don’t think the diabetes medicines are all that good for us.
