Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes :(
You really need to go to your doctor for this. We can give support for your ketogenic diet, but what you need is qualified medical service.
If you don’t know if you have type 1 or 2 diabetes you should seek medical attention immediately to determine which you have. I think you will need to manage either one first before you start changing your diet.
If you don’t know, than you’re type 2. If you were a type 1 you’d be dependent on insulin and would know the difference. 70 isn’t low, but it’s probably low for you which is why you feel like crap. What were your typical blood sugar reading before going keto… or were you checking then?
I agree but without knowing anything on a timeline I wouldn’t make any assumptions. Every Type 1 diabetic didn’t know they were Type 1…until they did.
Surely the doctor that diagnosed you will have told you? This isn’t something anyone on a forum can advise you on.
Hi Nada
I had… type 1. Blood sugar levels would be 40-60 around 2 and 3pm. Caused heart rhythm difficulties, and high bp. Put me in hospital 2yrs ago May. Since 1yr ago. When I started keto. It has normalized. Regular blood sugar ranges from 70 to 100 now. Its different for each individual. Before had a real hard time keeping it above 59. My dr was ready to start me on metformin. Glad I didn’t have to go on meds. Just keep track of it. When it would start getting too low. I would snack on cheese and like 5 blueberries. It finally straightened out. And no longer have a problem. Hope this helps. Unfortunately, it runs in my family. No advise just my personal experience.
Sorry to hear this, @nadalu.
I’d strongly recommend talking to your doctor to clarify things, especially where it concerns medication - because type 1 and type 2 are treated very differently.
Here’s a link you might find useful: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/difference-between-type1-and-type2-diabetes.html
For type 1 you need insulin injections. Type 2 is more like the pankreas getting overwhelmed and tired and initially it can be managed with pills and diet- only later on you might need injections. You cannot manage type 1 with pills and could fall into a coma. So it sounds to me like you would sooner have type 2. What did your doctor tell you? Are you overweight? Type 2s are overweight. Type 1 is hereditary and type 2 is more like a result of bad eating habits.
You mean you had type 2? You don’t come back from type 1 and you would have absolutely been on insulin.
Yeah type 2? Sorry for the confusion. Hypoglycemia? I am just glad it has resolved itself with Keto. Although it was not a quick fix. And I still have to watch for signs. I guess they call Hypoglycemia pre-diabetes. While Hypoglycemia in a non diabetic is also from low blood glucose it is also known to be caused by the over production of insulin. Which may lead to diabetes by either or both beta cell burnout or insulin resistance.
That’s the opposite of a diabetic, arguably it can be worse. At least if you go high you have way more wiggle room than when you go low. My mother is hypoglycemic. Carries around junk food with her just in case, I’ve always tried to get her to just keep glucose tablets since they hit you faster but candy tastes better! Luckily you caught it. Seems to happen to her less since going keto-ish though, makes sense, less spiking less crashing.
Yes ever since I was a kid I had problems. My sister and I would call it a sick attack, would usually get symptoms right before lunch at school. My sister still carrie’s a bag of snacks. She has to stay on top of it. I just tried to ignore the problem. I was hitting 220# and it just got out of hand, snacking on the wrong snacks. And to say the least landed me in the hospital. Since Keto, started last April. I have been able to stabilize my sugar levels. And loose 45#! Still have to watch for signs. And still carry glucose tablets in my purse.
For Just in case.
There is a test for T1. Many T1s are misdiagnosed as T2. You need your doctor to refer you for the appropriate tests.
This isn’t a universal truth, many are overweight but there’s plenty of thin T2 diabetics. Read about TOFI. There’s a growing number of thin people developing diabetes.
Wow. The body must have thinner arms and legs and a round abdomen. But I think it must also be more rare. Most type 2 will be obese. Just imagine how bad the foods are which are sold to us. They showed a program about all the sugars added to our foods on german TV last night. Sadly they focussed more on soft drinks than on the products on the shelf. I think more and more people are becoming aware.
It’s definitely possible to live a reasonably normal life for several years with mild type 1 until your limited beta cell capacity finally becomes too little for you to maintain even a poor semblance of glycemic homeostasis.
The difference between a type 1 and a type 2 is that a type 1 will loose muscle mass really fast other than frequent urination after consuming carbohydrates.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by a virus inserting it’s genetic material into pancreatic beta cells. So unless you were sick with a pain in your pancreas. It’s doubtful you have type 1 but I agree with others that a type 1 antibody test is required to be certain.
Like others have said. 70 is normal. Especially when starting keto as gluconeogenesis begins.
