Two weeks in, no flu, am I in Ketosis?

#1

Hi guys. New here, first post.
I have been eating keto for a couple of weeks now, and it’s been really interesting. I’ve been vegetarian for 25 years, but decided to eat meat recently. I have been having really bad anxiety for last two years, and have decided to eat meat and go keto to try and help me heal from feeling so disconnected.
The meat I ate was our own homeraised chicken, grass fed on acres of fields to roam. Happiest chickens ever hehe.
Anyway. My question! Am I in Ketosis? I have no idea. No smelly breath. No flu. But I’m sure I’ve lost weight. Trousers feel looser. My teeth and skin feel nice and smooth. I’ve been drinking lots of water and salting my food. But I had leg cramp for first time ever pretty much, so I opted to eat two bananas and coconut water one day and crampy leg has gone. This is the longest I’ve ever gone without eating bananas! Lol.
I have felt quite anxious and irritable this week. Really irritable in fact. I find it really hard to track my food, it takes for ever. I’ve been eating lots of greens with fats and eggs, salmon and chicken to go with them.
Thanks for any input.

Hi @Askye, congrats on going keto! Skip the bananas (massive amount of carbs) but do drink the coconut water if it happens again. Make sure you are taking in enough sodium (5g/day), potassium, and magnesium as well. Keto WOE tends to flush out water and the sodium w/ it. Search on keto-aid in this discussion board for the recipe.

For tracking, use Cronometer or Carb Manager; they make it pretty easy. For chicken, make sure you are eating the skin (fat), and as much dark meat (leg & wings) as you can.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much as long as you’re under 20g carbs. You have to be careful about serving sizes and hidden carbs. If you’re still unsure, you can do a blood or urine test but it’s not really necessary.

Only way to truly find out is to test your blood.

You would be better off to eat an avocado over a banana, much better for you and has no sugar unlike the banana.

Solider on you will feel better over time. My anxiety has almost disappeared since I stopped eating refined carbs.

You can add some magnesium supplements to help deal with the cramping.

I wouldn’t focus to much on the macros, it’s handy at the start to get an idea. If you are eating the right foods I wouldn’t obsess to much over it. Intermittent fasting is just as important.

Thank you for the reply guys. Glad to know your anxiety improved Leigh.
Just to clarify, I know I wouldn’t be in Ketosis if I ate the banana, but I was desperate to get rid of cramp leg, and it worked!
I have been drinking coffee, but might hold off again as I think it makes my anxiety worse. 🤷

One of the best changes for me two plus weeks in is really flat belly, no bloating and perfect BMs ! After years of IBS like symptoms, this is frikkin miraculous!! :dancer:

Thank you Grinch! I guess I feel good on the whole, so that’s a good sign ,

Thank you Ann! I need to figure out how to get potassium etc up. I’ll look into your suggestions. The banana was a last resort.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #8

The irritability might be Keto flu, or more accurately, carb withdrawal. Not everyone gets it the same.

Make yourself a batch of ketoade and fix both in one shot! Some psychos just drink salty water, I do mine in crystal light lemonade, and it tastes like… Crystal light lemonade! As it was said, the bananas are pure junk food, literally. Don’t be afraid to supplement things in, it can take a while to figure out a way to do stuff with diet and even then it can have you eating all types of wacky crap. Also, I’d advise you to track your food, it’s very easy and painless with things like cronometer. Both a website and phone app. Intuitive eating is great but you’re changing a lot about how you eat and want to make sure you’re not severely over or under doing stuff. You pick up on this stuff pretty quick and will most likely be able to not track after a while unless you’re troubleshooting something but you’re changing a lot about how you eat at once.

Also, CONGRATULATIONS on going back to a diet your body is compatible with! Keto or not, vegetarianism screws up a lot of people. Got a couple friends who went veggie long term and they’re all still undoing the damage. If you haven’t started eating red meat again, don’t do what all former veggies do and cook a steak into a piece of shoe leather. That’s repulsive to people who LIKE it, let alone people slowly coming back. Go to a steak house and get something like a Filet (not our typical cut) and get it med-rare. It’ll be soft, flavorful and melt in your mouth awesomeness. Then the FOLLOWING week you can grill up that 2lb bone in ribeye

Feel free to post a day or two sample diet if you’d like us to comment/tweak. I wouldn’t overthink ketosis.

Thank you ifod :grinning: lots of really good advice. I shall take a look at the app and that drink. And I might not be ready for a steak yet! But my friend is actually an organic beef farmer, and his cows are pretty wild, so when I’m ready I’ll probably opt for that meat as they have a good life and a kind an end as possible.
It’s true, Im sure tracking is good. But I just don’t know how to go about it. I mean, today my lunch was so crazy it would take me ages to track it! I made wild mushroom soup with chicken stock and it was quite strong so I ate a romaine salad with it…there’s so many ingredients in there, I wouldn’t know where to start. But maybe if I copy some pre set meals from others it could be a better basis to go off.

I never had keto flu but blood test shows I am in ketosis. Not everyone has keto flu or ketone breath so the only way to know for sure is testing

Hahahaha!!

Try to keep your meals simple, at least to start. I find that when I throw something together, I try to measure each ingredient so I know what’s going in it, and then I know what to add to my food log. I use Carb Manager to do my logging and it is working for me so far.

Wild mushroom soup sounds quite excellent! Would love the recipe. Could add heavy cream to give it some fat.

I did : D
It was foraged horse and field mushrooms! Been eating them all week with garlic and butter.

Thank you for that idea - I should simplify stuff to start with! : )))

At this point it appears you’ve done all the right things. Spend a little bit of money and invest in a Ketomojo blood ketone monitor or something similar if you are truly interested in knowing if you are in nutritional ketosis. It’s a super simple test and allows you to be sure you are doing what is necessary. It’s not 100% necessary to be 100% certain though. If you feel good and your clothes are fitting better, know you are on the right track. It’s all priorities.

Thank you Marshall. You make a good point!
