Trouble Getting / Staying in Kestosis

HELP!!! I’ve done low carb in the past and had fantastic results. Several years ago I lost 60 lbs. as life happened, I got busy and fell off the diet gaining most of the weight back. Over the last year I’ve tried several times for long stretches to get into ketosis with no success.

Since January I’ve stayed extremely positive. I haven’t lost weight, but I haven’t let that get to me. I’ve just tried to keep my head up and work to make tweaks to what I was doing based on research.

FINALLY this past Monday, I was in a good solid state of ketosis. I participate in a workout class on mondays during lunch where I burn anywhere from 800-1000 calories. I ate moderately that day, but ultimately fell 1000 calories short of my goal. I did eat a BK King (I know) without the bun that day. To my dismay Tuesday morning I was no longer in ketosis (using test). I’m thinking it was either the BK or the calorie issue. The only other change made was that was different from last week was that I drank a ton of sparkling water. The water is 0 carb with only 3 ingredients- water, CO2, and natural flavors.

Any insight would be appreciated

Jason

What kind of test did you use?

It was a urine test. I know there are mixed opinions on those. It was a clear result though which I started to see on Saturday and completely went away on Tuesday.

That is your issue. The urine tests are useless if you are keto. Your body may not be ecreting enough to be read by the stick because you are USING them as energy instead. You need to use a blood meter or breath meter.

Shouldn’t I then in theory see some weight loss? I actually gained a little weight Monday going into Tuesday.

Just want to make sure I stay on the right track…

I don’t know your weight or body composition to know that. You could be changing body composition and gaining weight. Or you could be holding onto water. Or your body is at the weight it needs to be. I don’t know. I can say that urine strips are not good detectors of longterm ketosis. It may work for some, but it is not reliable for most. Invest in a blood meter and then see.

Thanks for your help!!! I’ll research for a good blood meter!

I have both the Keto Mojo and Precision Xtra and like them both.

In a perfect world, you should see weight loss if you restrict carbs and focus on high fat and moderate protein. However, there are many variables that can prevent or delay results on the scale.

Stress, how much healing your hormones require, how much body fat you have, medication, age, sex, eating more carbs than you realize and medical conditions can all complicate weight loss goals.

If I were you, I would focus on the basics and take comfort in knowing that eating single item whole foods, while keeping your carbs low is doing lots of good things for your body even if the scale doesn’t confirm it.

And to be fair, you should realize that keto the second or third time around isn’t as easy as it was the first. It’s not impossible, but you really have to do it right to convince your body to give up fat in a healthy manner.
