(What The Fast?!) #1

Hi all!! So, I’ve been doing keto for about a month and I’ve finally got buy-in from my boyfriend. He works in the health and fitness space, so he’s aware of keto but he’s been very hesitant to start because he travels for work every week 3-5 days/week. He’s in multiple cities across the country every week and often has very few options on the road. A lot of times he’s in smaller cities on a tight schedule. He’s very good about making healthy choices (or what we had defined as healthy in the past), but is concerned about what he’ll be able to eat “on the go.”

Do you have any suggestions on grab and go keto foods that will get him enough fat? (Carrying around bags of meat and cheese snacks or anything that needs to be refrigerated won’t happen, so it’s got to be stuff he can buy or order.)

We try and eat the most high quality food so he doesn’t really do fast food restaurants unless he absolutely has to. His go to on the road (especially if he gets in late at night) is always pizza and/or eating on airplanes, but neither is really an option now. I’ve told him that his easiest option is always a burger with no bun, and of course it’s easy if he’s in a restaurant (steak salad for the win).

Help and suggestions appreciated!

I think you gave him good tips on burger no bun, as well as steak with veg combo. Another option is taking advantage of all day breakfast type restaurants where you can get eggs done anyway you like them, and with bacon and/or sausage.

Macadamia nuts have been my go to snack when I’m on the go. For restaurant meals I tend to stick to the steak, salmon, or chicken & veg type meals, though lately I’ve been digging Buffalo Wild Wings chipotle bbq wings. He could still eat pizza if he sticks to the toppings only.

I definitey do not trust him in front of a pizza… His willpower < pizza.

I travel for work too. My go to’s are:

  • Pepperoni - be careful of the fillers used (like wheat flour)
  • Jerky - be careful of sugars used in the jerky flavourings, but salt/pepper and plain jerky are fine.
  • Cheese - lots of Brie and Camembert don’t need to be refrigerated. Brie usually has higher fat content.
  • (Pickled) eggs.
  • Pickles (and their delicious juice!)
  • Macadamia nuts and almonds - not too many though!
  • Pork rinds
  • Oh, and a jar of mayo (made with olive oil, not vegetable oil) for dipping most of the above into…yum!

Thank you for that!!

Sorry…I added more as they came to mind…

Do you do airplane food? He usually gets upgraded and they feed him. I told him to stick to the nuts they serve along with cheeses, and to just eat the protein in the in-flight meal.

Not really…not anymore since going keto. I just don’t get hungry like I used to so skipping a meal for a few hours travel is usually not a problem. If they serve crackers and cheese, the it’s just the cheese, or a hot meal I might just nibble at the meat and veges only. Sometimes I buy a few mini babybel cheeses and throw them in my carry on in case of a mid-flight hunger crisis.

I still find fasting the best option when it comes to airline food. I fill up on eggs and butter the morning of my flight which keeps my mind off food anyway. 24hrs of flights tomorrow so a good day of fasting coming up. Will have a bag of pecans handy if I need them.

Whatever you do, don’t tell the airline you have a special diet request! You’ll be greeted with a meal that’s a kind of blandness you never experienced before. Steamed white rice and poached fish.

@keehan you probably already know this, but for other people reading this, most brands that proclaim “olive oil” on their label only have a bit of olive oil in the mix, and the primary ingredient is still soybean and/or canola oil.

High cocoa chocolate is good too - it tends to be satisfying and gives you an energy boost. I find having some of that and a bag of brazil’s or macadamias keeps me fine.
Avocados too - they don’t need kept cool and you can just eat them as a snack.
Also canned sardines and mackerel in olive oil - all you need for preparation is a fork and a wee wet wipe for after.

I do think this is where fast food places do come in handy, especially burger ones. It is easy to get something keto just by dropping the bun and fries.

Yep… something I’ve learned since going keto is to ALWAYS read the ingredient list carefully.

Certainly do!! 9hr stop over in Bangkok, 36hr day, bun less double cheeseburger enough to keep me going ready for the next flight. :grinning:

Yep. I picked up “garlic butter” in the supermarket, it was about 12% butter, the rest was fillers and garbage oils.

Bunless double cheeseburgers are the perfect snack-size quick eat. As much as I don’t like McD’s, it’s at least very consistent (and safe to eat) anywhere in the world.

I travel a fair amount.
Travel Prep:
-I usually cook bacon Sunday night.
-Trader Joes has small packs of green olives. 2 bags per week. (-If I am tempted by airplane snacks I open a bag. I bring 2 single serving packages)
-Marcona Almonds- are a personal fav as well
-Airplane food - just pick out the meat (sauces are dangerous)
-Soda water and a lime

Monday:
I keep 5-6 pieces of bacon in my carry on bag for lunch. That keeps me through dinner time.
-Grocery store- grab some guac packs, and celery, or meat/cheese from deli. Whatever I am in the mood for.

Tuesday:
-Chipolte for lunch
-BWW 1/2 off traditional wing Tuesday.

Wednesday-Thursday:
-Depending on the hotel, eggs/+meat
-Diners are good.I use yelp to find good ones. I have had some great meals this way.
-Go where ever the project team wants, ask for salad and meat. Places always will accommodate.
-Small steak/veggies - pretty much any mid-tier/small town steakhouse
