I am having difficulties with asthma/sinusitis six months after beginning a keto lifestyle. At one point, I had stalled and was informed I should think about reducing my protein intake, which worked very well for me. However, now I am trying to figure out what is the cause of my asthma and sinus problems resurfacing after many, many years. Could it be the reduced protein intake? Has anyone experienced this?
Too Little Protein causing issues?
Do you eat a lot of dairy?
I love my cheese and cream but if I have any kind of a cold or throat bug, dairy will make the (forgive me) snot, much worse. So I reduce my intake of it if that happens.
Worth considering.
Yup, totally agree with Clare. I had chronic stuffy nose, blocked ears pretty much all my life. My doc suggested that I give up all dairy and see what happens. It was a miracle! I was clear-headed and was able to get off my Claritin D, Flonase, and Afrin. Dairy was the culprit.
Now that I’m eating keto I have added dairy back in and I’m back to being congested. At some point when I’ve been doing keto longer I will fine-tune my food choices and try to cut back on the dairy, but I’m still in the beginning, learning stages so I can’t be too hard on myself. One step at a time.

I don’t suffer all the time fortunately but if something triggers the (again, forgive me) snot, then I really have to watch out. Or it’s prolonged periods over a facial sauna and my only perfume is vicks vapour rub. #sexy
Wheat caused a lot of my congestion.
I think Dairy does too but I can’t seem to wean off cheese and cream.
Yeah, we can only give up so much and still sustain this way of eating. We have to choose our battles.

Thanks, guys. I do not consume any more dairy than prior to going keto. A half cup kefir, a slice of cream cheese and/or cheddar. That’s the extent of my dairy intake. No wheat at all on keto.
Wheat did it to me before keto. Dairy not as bad but I can tell a difference when I have had too much Dairy now.
Maybe now we tend to feel well in general, we’ve become more sensitive to the odd issue here and there - whereas before the signal was lost in the noise of how shite we felt in so many ways…
Could be totally unrelated to diet. My chronic cold / respiratory symptoms are caused by my cat allergy but these guys are my family and going nowhere.
I think my problem is dairy as well …but I really struggle with giving it up …I may try after I have been keto a bit longer
Makes me sad as when I started keto I was convinced inflammation would be down and the last thing I expected was to have my asthma and sinus problems resurfacing as they had basically been under control for many years. Which means I now have to go on meds, again the least thing I expected to do whilst doing keto. Yikes.
Have you tried total elimination of all grains, beans, and dairy?
If you’re really serious about finding out what is nutritionally discordant for you, it’s necessary. It can take up to a month or two for alleviation, but it can also happen within a week or so. After a couple of months after symptoms go away, you can selectively add them back in to find out which one caused the problem.
Ken, I don’t eat beans and grains on Keto. Dairy yes, but very little, as in cream in coffee.
If you think too little protein might be causing trouble try more protein. It is nearly impossible to isolate just that one factor and be certain, but with time and focus you ought to be able to get a sense of it. If the effect is so subtle that you don’t see a connection then it doesn’t much matter.
High levels of protein intake might affect ketones, blood sugar and possibly weight loss and if you are going keto for a medical condition such as diabetes or obesity then track those things important to your condition and if needed adjust your protein to a level that allows continuing progress perhaps at a slower rate.
@Troy001 you don’t mention how much protein you are getting that you think is too low. Any idea on the amount?
This food list may be helpful for asthma.
Many people with autoimmune issues struggle with a lot of dairy. Dairy can also be easy to overeat.
This food list is brutal but effective if you have autoimmune issues. It can also be good to go back to basics and then build things back in to see what you can tolerate.
