Tired and cranky

(Cody) #1

I’ve been on the Keto diet now for about 18 days, I started off with a 4 day fast. During the fast and about 5 days after I experienced some insomnia which this week has turned into extreme fatigue and many naps. I find when I’m not napping I’m extremely annoyed with everyone and everything around me which is pretty unusual for me as I’m a pretty easy going and fun person. Basically I’ve had to quarantine myself from friends and family due to the fact we all seem to enjoy pushing each other’s buttons from time to time and they seem to really be successful these last 3 days. I’m headed to the store now to score some vitamins and hoping that will help since I know it’s not a lack of water, I’m currently drinking about a gallon a day. I’ve lost 20 pounds so far so I’m very happy with that and know I just gotta get over this hill. Well it’s pretty early here so I’m going to the store now for vitamins as to avoid other drivers on the road and possibility of road rage… nobody needs to be honked at or flipped off at 5am😊

Two things that spring to mind are salt and magnesium.
Magnesium has a certain chill factor that might be beneficial! I would opt for malate, glycinate or citrate not oxide.
Salt should also helming balance you out and I would shoot for 1-2 teaspoons a day of a good quality rock salt. I have little baggies of 1/2 tsps that I take with water during the day.
Other than that, take it easy and rest up when you need to. Eat well and don’t go hungry. KCKO. x

Thank you very much I will be giving that a try

Hi Cody, be sure to get your 5g of sodium as well, and the magnesium citrate supplement, according to what I have seen here on the forums that is. I’m not a doctor and just know that this advice has helped me. I think you may want some bone broth as well for all of the minerals and perhaps increase your potassium too? They’re worth a try, but KCKO and you are doing great…20lbs gone, whew!

Just be careful with potassium re supplementation. It is not like magnesium which just flushes out any excess and can be problematic. The best way by far to up potassium is by eating foods rich in it like avocado.

(Cody) #6

Perfect cause I do enjoy avocados. Thanks again

So with the salt are you just mixing it with a cup of water or are you adding it to food? And should I go rock salt or is Himalayan rock salt the way to go?

#8

You can go with your rock salt of choice! I like the pink Himalayan because it is pretty and is less harsh on the tastebuds IMO. I don’t mix it with water no, I just put it on my tongue and then chase it down with some water. So I do kind of mix it just not pre drinking! Some people just let some sit on or under their tongue until it dissolves. I do add to food too as and when for seasoning.

Sugar withdrawal. …

Haha I like the idea of the pink salt since it’s pretty I’ll go with that, and I’ve heard it’s supposed to be a little better for you.

Yeah - I would say the better for you thing is inconclusive. It is certainly better than a refined table salt though and it is pretty so…

@Codyha44 I can attest to the fact that crankiness is common early on with this. I’m in the same situation right now. You just need to KCKO. It will pass! I personally like to drink beef broth. I think the lack of salt might contribute to the crankiness as it also does with headaches. We’re just out of whack right now but once we get adapted to this WOE the improvements are just amazing. You will feel so much better than ever before.

Hi Cody,
I’m pretty new sticking to the diet but I don’t have any sleep problem - it might just because I’m lucky or it might have something to do with the lots of green leaves I intake every day.
I think you might be experiencing the keto-flu. Here’s an article which I believe could give you some hints, also it provides some natural food which can provide the minerals.

Crankyness, irritability and bad sleep are classic symptoms of a brain that’s not getting enough energy, which is what’s happening if you go from a high carb diet to no carbs at all. Keto flu hits us all differently and you might have gotten the short end of the stick in this regard to still be struggling with it after more than two weeks. As others have said, sodium and magnesium and drink lots of water (although at a gallon a day you should definitely be getting enough, and it may even exacerbate the loss of electrolytes). Another thing that might help is just to eat more calories (in the form of fat) as long as you don’t have to stuff yourself. Eventually you’ll adapt, it shouldn’t be too long now, and I’m sure the lack of sleep also plays a part in this.

IF was the only thing that broke through the wall for me. Have you tried that?

(Cody) #16

What is IF?

Intermittent Fasting. :grinning:
