Guys, this isn’t about keto, but for anyone who is wrestling with kidney issues this news sounds very promising so I hope it’s okay to post it here.

This Israeli doctor’s revolutionary discovery could end the need for kidney dialysis

Interesting. This is definitely worth keeping an eye on. It could mean a huge quality of life improvement for a whole lot of people.

Dialysis is such a massive profit center there is bound to be substantial resistance though. Cue the medical industrial complex counter-offensive in 3…2…1…

It is certainly true that a well-formulated ketogenic diet can take a great strain off the kidneys.

In that light, my suspicion is that this new technique will probably turn out to be just as profitable . . .

Unfortunately there is no profit in simply telling people how to eat right.

I suspect it’ll be very expensive. When you consider that dialysis costs $90,000/year and persists indefinitely though, the net present value of the cash flows could easily be $2,000,000 per patient, because the cost of the treatment is actually rising at double the rate of inflation. From an insurers perspective, if the surgery costs $500,000, it would still be an absolute bargain.

Where the resistance will come from is established dialysis behemoths. They will not take kindly to a threat to a $24 billion dollar cash cow. Even if it cost the industry’s lobbying group $100,000,000 to delay the FDA approval process by a decade or two it would be peanuts.

Ain’t that the truth. I just wish they’d invest less time and energy into telling people how to eat wrong!
