What about alcohol ?! I mentioned going on Vacay to Vegas. And when I go it’s all I do, DRINK. Is there a way around it ? Should I just be sober?
Third day on Keto; don’t judge me
I Think someone posted something about Bourbon being sugar free… I Wouldn’t know honestly, as alcohol is just not something I have researched as far as carbs and ketosis… I am sure there are things like beer where you don’t want to do that… I would do some research… I can’t honestly say I would stay sober in Vegas lol… which if the bourbon whiskey thing is true… would be fine for me because that was my drink in the hay days… I would definitely do some research for yourself.
Liquors don’t have any sugar, they are all fully low carb friendly. Wine has a small amount of carbs, and beer had the most. Well I guess mixed drinks can have the most.
BTW, you’re going on vacation so I wouldn’t recommend asceticism. If you want to drink, drink.
Tequila, vodka, bourbon/whiskey, rum all carb free but be sure to mix them with sugar-free mixers. BUT they can kick you out of ketosis as your liver halts everything to clear the poisons out so keep that in mind as well. Also definitely be careful as you can become a lightweight on Keto! Also hangovers will kill you if you don’t load up on salt.
Once you get Fat Adapted… those go away, in fact your appetite possibly will subside almost completely and you will only be hungry when your body actually requires food.
Spot on, of course! Thanks for reaffirming, @FatHappyChris!
Chiming in here!
I also have my vain reasons as well - I want to look good in my engagement and wedding photos, and I am turning 30 in January and want to go into weight maintenance once and for all. This is a lifelong battle I want to end with this decade. I definitely want the health benefits, but my superficial reasons are also strong motivators for me.
I ate low carb while in Vegas when I tried it for the first time at age 21 and had no issue sticking with it. We cooked meals in our timeshare from time to time, but when we went out, we buffeted and there are PLENTY of options. I loaded up on steak, crab legs, and salad.
Alcohol is another story - I definitely didn’t stick to low carb because I was a gin bucket drinker at that age (gin, lemonade, & Sprite), but because of following LC, my alcohol tolerance was pretty low and I could only really handle 1 drink a night. It was also one of only two vacations where I came back weighing the same as I did when I left, so I think your chances are very good if you can stick to keto at least most of the time.
I do have a deadline…When I get in that coffin.
It’s a lifestyle for me. Dieting works until you stop dieting.
My problem with drinking was… I would have a good buzz and be like awww a few chips won’t hurt or maybe a few pieces of popcorn won’t either. Lol. Two months ago I decided to stop drinking and have lost an extra twelve pounds.
Yes I’ve seen that issue mentioned on these forums, it’s a real risk! Glad you figured it out and could stop. I don’t have that issue but I try to limit drinking to only very occasionally because it’s not really worth stalling out my keto lifestyle for.
You are lucky. And I agree, It’s not worth it. I just wished I would have realized that back in January when I started. Oh well KCKO!!!
Hey, at least you figured it out! We are all playing the long game, yeah? Tiny blip
You may THINK that you are only doing it to lose a few pounds, but the truth is …You’re going to end up loving it and improving your life. Fixing things that you never even realized were wrong. We are here to support you regardless. Best of luck!
Turns out, vodka and other hard liquors have 0 carbs (!). Beer more, esp IPA ( my fav !). Wine more than vodka less than beer. Then what you mix it with - that’s what to look out for (!). I’m liking a shot or 2 gray goose with squeezed lime juice just fine !
I used to try to explain this to people… but it always got so much retaliation from the ‘hardcore’
Glad to see others understand this.
well it doesnt ‘kick you out’ but it definitely prioritizes clearing out the alcohol over fat burning, etc.
I couldnt find much on the subject of keto diet and alcohol. I found this site, but the pure number of adds make me question its legitimacy.
This was the take away for me…
"The liver of a person on a high carbohydrate diet has a lot of glycogen stored. Glycogen is a by-product of glucose (sugar and carbs) and is the secondary long-term energy storage, with the primary energy stores being the fat cells held in adipose tissue. If you are eating a carbohydrate rich diet, the pathways for fat burning are busy breaking down sugars; the alcohol is metabolized slower because of this hold up. Conversely, a person on a low carb diet has depleted their liver’s glycogen stores and is now running on fats instead of carbs and glucose, and burning body fat more efficiently. Since their glycogen stores are low, the alcohol ingested will start to be metabolized by the liver right away.
This immediate metabolization will cause that sudden onset on feeling drunk. Your liver isn’t going to warn you when that alcohol has arrived for processing. Many keto-ers will experience lowered tolerance simply because their liver is ready to metabolize efficiently instead of feeling sluggish processing extra carbs and sugars."
Somewhere on that page they also called Alcohol the 4th macro.
This sounds like quite a misunderstanding of the stuff I’ve learned from Drs. Lustig and Attia about the metabolism of alcohol and fructose. Fat metabolism is a quite different metabolic pathway, from the lectures I’ve watched.
…and we all know that Doctors couldnt possible be getting anything wrong, or misunderstanding something [wink wink nudge nudge]
