Thinking of going carnivore for Lent (40 days)

(Bob M) #1

Hi All,

I’m thinking of going carnivore for Lent. Starts Wednesday, March 6th, ends Thursday, April 18th.

A few questions. Can I continue to fast 36 hours twice per week (my goal, which I meet…sometimes)?

Can I get blood test results done for cholesterol in that period? I was going to use Dave Feldman’s six-day technique to ensure I got a good result. I assume I can do that with just meat, eggs, some dairy?

Is 40 days long enough to experience any supposed benefits of carnivore?

I’m currently about 90% carnivore, though I still eat some vegetables. I also eat some dairy. Typically, my lunches are all meat or meat with some olives. My dinners will have some vegetables, sometimes.

I don’t plan on quitting coffee or tea. Don’t think bad of me because of that.

Honestly you shouldn’t expect carnivore results if you’re eating vegetables. And it can take six months for numbers to be relevant, usually all over the place before then

I have been Carnivore going on 3 months after 1 year of Keto & IF. I am thinking of writing about my 3 months experience soon but I would just like to give you some quick advice on the diet from my perspective.

  1. Follow Dr. Shawn Baker’s advice to “Eat Meat Like it’s Your Job” in the first month of the diet, I think that goes a long way to help with the “Carni Flu” you get when transitioning into the diet.
  2. Unless you have 50lbs of fat to lose I would suggest avoid an extended fast on the diet. I went from being able to do 24hr or 36hr fast with no problems to only being able to complete a 14hr or 12hr fast.
  3. Carnivore diet is an elimination diet not a weight-loss diet, so I would suggest don’t focus on the scale if it would upset you to see the numbers trend up. I actually needed to regain weight back after Keto &IF and the Carnivore diet has helped me with that.

I hope that helps, I’m hoping to post about my experience in more detail on March 5th (the day before Lent).

I’d love to join you if you up for a lenten carnivore friend. I’m not sure I want to do it forever but I’d love to try. On the day of the superbowl we had a party to attend and I ate a bunch of raw veggies I hadn’t had in awhile. (now I eat celery and romaine lettuce that’s all) and I was bloated and felt like butt. I gained a ton of weight. I dont crave vegetables or even desire them. I would like to see how I feel on carnivore.

If you feel you need to. It’s generally recommended to continue nourishing yourself, but people do what they want anyway.

You can do this, but consult Dave’s site for exactly which foods to avoid, I think he specifically mentions no coconut oil, but I think dairy should work okay, and meat fat obviously.

Sometimes. Other times it can take a year or longer to fully adapt and heal. It varies from person to person. You’ll probably see SOME benefit if not all, however.

Not to go and tell people what to do, but if you’re planning on continuing plants while carnivore, you may not realize all of the benefits of cutting out plants.

No evidence, scientific or anectdotal points to a need to cut out plant-derived caffeine drinks. Black, of course.

Source: Been doing this for 1.5 years.
