Beginning week 8. The first two weeks I had the keto flu, and then lucked out and dealt with a month of bronchitis (I am still coughing). So, not a lot of physical activity for the last two months. That’s a long time to not be very active. I am usually very active. This morning I woke up, felt great, and inspired by the Ernestine Shepherd post, decided to turn my usual 2.5 mile walk into 5. Went like a breeze but then got Hungry. (At which point I was hungry, not hangry.) Ate huge- bacon, avocado, and felt better, until two hours later. Snacked on celery and cream cheese. Three hours later, lunch - cheeseburger. This was more than I have eaten on one day in the last eight weeks. On a hunch, peed on a stick. In eight weeks I have only been light pink four times, same time each day. Today, with the usual water intake, was the first reading of moderate. I know exercise increases appetite, by why the increase in wasted ketones? I felt off all day long. Also peed like the first week on Keto. Actually, the entire day felt like my first day on Keto. Now, when I get hangry, I tend to go on hunger strikes. I always assumed it was low blood sugar. Hungry, and becoming hangry after lunch, I found a coupon for some great burger at Carl’s Junior. I am aware of the no sauce, no bun thing. I was set on it. I felt like crap, so my husband promised when his work was done, he would bring me one. Ate a quarter block of cheddar in his absence. Zero relief. Not enough food in the world. By the time he showed up, I had morphed into a five year old. Did I still want a burger? NO. Did I want him to go to the store. NO. Did I want lobster at a restaurant. NO. (Patient man). I claimed I was not hungry. He rounded the corner to find me scarfing peanut butter like a closet addict. Just shook his head. Told me he would cook me pork chops later, and left (wise man). Came back with one of those gym bench things you can do crunches, etc. on. How sweet. Ernestine Sheperd, move over. This crazy 60 year old is aiming for a great shape, and lower triglycerides. (But only if one can simultaneously crunch and baconate.) There are so many variables…every day can be different. My body was speaking to me today - I didn’t know what she was trying to say - but hopefully I took care of some of her needs. I’m turning in early. Tomorrow is another day, and hopefully she will not be speaking in code.
The ups and downs of Keto - a weird day today
Breaking news from Liver: Regina - I really appreciate all the work you are doing, but today could have been so different. I appreciate the fact that the Lungs failed you in the last few weeks. But today was the day you woke up recovered. I have been trying my best, ketone-wise. Instead of having a hissy fit - this would have made everyone so much happier. “Hun, I have a craving for the Red Lobster tonight. My treat.” You, me, hubby, all would have scored. Please eat to satiety. No drama.
Well at eight weeks are you nearing that magic time of fat adaption. I can say though my hunger nearing it (5-6 weeks) was far worse than later on.
It sounded like you were looking for protein, if I want a hamburger or a peice of salmon that is what I eat.
With your increase in activity today though you may try some extra salt that tends to help my hunger early in the day esp once I started to IF and it was not quite to meal time.
I’m a salt fanatic. But hopefully now that my bronchitis is out of the way, I will eat what is needed. I have always been a meat person, so think I get enough protein. But the appetite is completely back. Thanks for replying so quickly!
Also the week of I figured out I was fat adapted I ate nothing but fish the whole week, and then I ate liverwurst for 2 days. I don’t know why but that is what I wanted.
Did you have a huge appetite when you became fat adapted? I thought appetite was supposed to decrease. I think I am making up for the last month.
When I realized it no not really. If anything it lessened, I was around 25% BF at the time.
But two things also happened that I have not been able to shake.
Before I could tell when it was time to eat, in the sense that I need to intake energy and I feeling a little low. After fat adaption my hunger signalling has been messed up, if I were to follow the advice of eat when I am hungry it could be a few days between meals. Or hours but mostly days. Its getting better but I have been caught with very low energy when I did not need to be like that. And since fat takes a little while to get you back up there is that delay in between. Ever since I carry spare coconut oil with. So to a certain extent I have gone back to cyclical eating esp in the last month as my shift changed at work for a temporary amount of time. That said when I am hungry I getting better at the subtle signals of what I want to eat via cravings. So often I shop hungry if possible even though I have a pretty rigid routine for what I buy and eat.
The other thing is I have really started to desire fat, to the point of not even sharing the bacon grease with the dog anymore. I have more than once come home and eaten a pat of butter or even a tablespoon of EVO once. I try and not snack, but if I do it is almost always heavy fat based if I can help it, lately esp I have gotten lazey but I am still loosing weight and BF despite having some really large intakes of fat several days in a row. Again I have been working long hours and abnormal eating windows so this does not help.
Have never tried coconut oil, but have always loved fatty meats.
I have up until this week had coconut oil everyday at least 1 tablespoon in hot water with lemon and salt. If you want to get your ketones up high that is an easy way to do it the MCT family is quickly absorbed by the gut and it pretty much goes direclty to energy production. That is why people often drink BPC in the morning, I hate coffee so its my form. I have gone through over 200 fluid oz of the stuff since I started in nov that is around 15 pounds.
So high ketones burn more fat? I am really leery of MCT oil since my body does not like extra fat. Adjust is a polite way of putting it. Won’t my body do it’s thing on it’s own? TMI already prone to dietary diahrrea.
I am a normal weight - just think I need to build muscle. Again, that involves listening to my body.
High ketones are a sign you burned fat, not indication of how much or were it came from.
Ketones themselves aid in a few of the processes in therapeutic manner so there is some advantages to having higher ketones. Animal fats have to take the long route to the liver and its a secnic journey. MCT’s and SCT’s(butter) go straight there once they get absorbed through the gut wall. Its a nice way to get some extra energy esp when fasting.
MCT oil and MCT’s are in the same family not the same thing. There are several MCT’s mainly coconut oil, but EVO is as well. I have MCT oil and that stuff is potent and you need to be careful with it basically its high test coconut oil that stays liquid at much lower temps. Cooking with coconut oil, or adding a small amount coffee or hot water should not effect you terribly.
