The ‘Eat This Not That’ Guide to the Keto Diet

No carbs, no sugars, no fruits. And all proteins aren’t created equal. Confused? Read on.

THE KETOGENIC DIET can be dizzyingly complicated. You want to load up on fats and protein and keep your carb intake low— but all fats and proteins aren’t alike, and there are some veggies higher in carbohydrates than others. Oh, and fruit (fruit!) is pretty much banned. But don’t worry: We’ve put together the best and worst of each category so you can go Keto with confidence.

I should read before commenting!

Thanks @DBatting for sharing.

I know there’s no hard and fast list that suits all people, but I thought it came off as fairly well-informed for a hard-line “this not that” list from a major publication that isn’t made up of doctors. I’m interested in what is it you found so wrong with it.

(Karen Fricke) #4

Looks like a simple, straight forward list for a newbie.

(Jenn W) #5

The list seems fine. While considering this is for a popular magazine, I just dislike the lead in stating it’s complicated. Really it’s not.

(Steven Cook) #6

Well I’m glad I did read it. Hadn’t realised potato starch was used in shredded cheese!

(Jenn W) #7

Isn’t that crazy?!? I learned that awhile back for soup recipes. If you want lump free and smooth always use block cheese and a shredder.

(Steven Cook) #8

Currently looking at cheese graters on Amazon! :joy:

Great arm exercise!
If you get an old school one careful with those knuckles!

Good list thanks for taking the time to share it with the forum, would make a great reminder list to put on the refrigerator, to help you remember the essentials you need from the store, the more tools we have in our toolbox the better, although my wife doesn’t agree with that philosophy and won’t let me go to Home Depot by myself anymore,in my defense the jackhammer was on sale, but I’m not allowed to say anything about her shoe and purse collection, sorry about that, needed to vent a little,Keep posting and Keto on,with all the different people posting this will become an awesome clearinghouse of information, I’m excited to see where this forum goes in the next year

Ruled.me also has a good food replacement section.

I suggest eliminating even the “safe” artificial sweeteners. Studies show that your brain interprets these as sugar thus insulin response. I also think it’s easier to control cravings in general by cutting all the “sweet” tasting items.

That’s the sort of article that was written by someone who had never done it, just surfed the web and put it together from bits and pieces.

Better to get info from veterans. Volek, Phinney, Attia. Maybe Jimmy Moore although he is starting to bother me (self appointed expert but a poor physical example). Don’t take investment advice from poor people, don’t take diet advice from fat guys…

(ds) #14

What about you? May I take advice from you?

(Nathan Hall) #15

Dude. Don’t go there. Just because someone doesn’t meet your standard of thin or fit, doesn’t mean their advice/opinion is worthless. Mr. Moore has made plenty of progress over the years to include many non-scale victories. There are plenty of people in this forum that still qualify as “fat”, overweight, “plus sized”, etc. I’d still take advice from them over throwaway lines like the last one you offered.

For another example, look at Jillian Michaels, really fit, but dolling out CICO that’s not going to help me. I’ll take advice from a guy who’s made progress, is open to science, and has given advice that has actually worked for me.

As for advice from a “poor person”, you can learn valuable advice from both ends of the spectrum. My grandfather lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s and passed on many valuable lessons about what is truly important in life. Many of those lessons were learned while he was dirt poor.
There are plenty of times in my life that his advice fit my situation better than tips from a billionaire that are out of touch with where I am in life.
