The CEO of Coca-Cola Europe surprised at how much sugar is in a Coke

From James Quincy’s view coke is all about Calories In / Calories Out, and if we idiots just understood this and got off our lazy asses and went for a run … he’d be able to sell more of those sugar water thingys.

On the other hand, Coca-Cola is one of the major companies I hear about investigating alternatives for sweetening their soda. They had/have their experiment with some stevia in the Coca-Cola Life product, but it tastes pretty terrible, so I hear they may have been investigating that type of fungus which is said to be able to eliminate bitter tastes or after-tastes, potentially in things like the stevia extracts commonly used. If they do figure out making a soda with stevia without the terrible after taste, that could be pretty good for all.

Or we might figure out after a few years there are other problems with the sweet model or one or the other component after all.

I have no doubt they are spending the GDP of several small nations in discovering how they can sell more product with their brand on it.

I hope they choke on it.

They were responsible for the energy balance furphy … namely that people just need to eat less and move more to cure diabesity. And indirectly that caused a much bigger problem that is going to bankrupt our health systems.

Yea, I’m not saying they are a great, benevolent company. I’m just saying they may soon (relatively) be able to drop some of the crap and still sell their stevia water. It’s just in their best interests (regardless of ours), and they seem to be pursuing it.

Wow. Artificially sweetened fungus Coke…mmmmmm…delish. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Keto in Katy) #6

I hope that comes in a 12 pack

(JennyBelle ) #7

WOW!! I need to get that fizzy soda water maker you have! I grow stevia year round (even in Alaska) and add perhaps some stevia flavored drops:)!

All joking aside carbonating water with a Soda Stream and adding a little apple cider vinegar isn’t too bad. A little like a not quite ready kombucha!

I hope some dictator comes to power, er, some other dictator comes to power that the US democratic process throws up some enlightened leader who will tax them out of existence.

(Dustin Cade) #10

I still wonder what our grocery stores would look like if Keto was the mainstream dominate way of eating… what boundaries would food companies cross to provide keto products to replace those that made them what they are?

#11

Isn’t that what Bloomberg is doing with his soda taxes? Basically adding a “sin” tax to soda the way it is added to cigarettes.

(Dustin Cade) #12

in a way, though it’s the wrong way to go about it, people will fight tooth and nail against that, it’s an infringement on freedom… everyone knows smoking is bad, people see drinking soda as a normal everyday part of life… it took decades of smear campaigns and cancer, and lots of deaths linked to smoking to really show a decline in smoking… people on the whole do not like giving up what they like, even if they know it will be cause of early death…

(ianrobo) #13

problem is that coke is ver price elastic. Watching a video of a Robert Lustig talk today and he said in studies need to double the price to make a significant impact, that would never happen.

#14

Sure, but the revenue could be used to educate and also help treat the issues. That’s basically the goal of most “sin” taxes.

(ianrobo) #15

Except they don’t andvthey just go into a general taxation pot. I want a tax on sugar but only works if education alongside it.

(Nigel Williams) #16

Watching that clip I remember 20+ years ago a new coke was introduced and there was a backlash and the original was brought back.

But are coke saying that the original, created 100 years ago, had this amount of sugar or is the original actually not original.

I’d argue that Coca-Cola had more than just an indirect effect on our health system. They can absolutely choke on it.

(chris) #19

Problem with that is taxes don’t work on any company. When you increase taxes they just bump up the price of the product/service. The consumer is really the one who pays taxes for them

(Patrick B.) #20

I keep telling that to anyone who argues for more corporate taxes… Nobody listens. Consumers pay corporate taxes.
