The CEO of Coca-Cola Europe surprised at how much sugar is in a Coke

coke

(Sascha Heid) #21

Fuck him and everyone who works for him.
Shall they all burn in hell, fucking assholes.

(Ian Stavert) #22

Well it’s not original because that would have cocaine in it.

(Nigel Williams) #23

Ahh I thought it tasted different:grin:

yes you are correct that a sin tax is paid by the consumer not the producer of a product … but that will reduce their market. A pack of 25 cigarettes in Australia is currently almost $40, when I last smoked in Australia in 1997 the price was $5. That difference is all taxes. Profit on a pack is still around $0.15

In that time prevalence of smoking in Australia has gone from 24% to under 15%

But also education campaigns and packaging laws have some effect too. This for example is what cigarette packets look like in Australia

Can you imagine those two images on a pack of sugar (Diabetes causes both of those diseases too)

(Arlene) #25

With those packages, I’m quite surprised anyone is able to smoke them at all.

(chris) #26

Canada does very blunt warning labels on cigarettes as well. I saw one that said “cigarettes will kill you”

(ianrobo) #27

how much a pack @richard ??? jeez …

OK I am a smoker but low level at around 5-7 a day but price is a determent. check out Mexico and what has happened after their sugar tax. Coke when their sugar tax combat papers were released showed they they think a tax works. Remeber Coke works because it is so cheap and whilst would be price insensitive for a while if a tax is say indexed to inflation plus 2% then I think over a number of years it would help.

#28

Well, i think in this case, that’s the point. We tax that industry because we want to reduce the amount of coke people drink, because the price will go up due to the tax.

(Patrick B.) #29

I don’t disagree with you but that’s not a tax on the corporation which is what I was replying about. Sin taxes are always paid by the consumer, not the corporation.

Although I will tell you that addicts don’t necessarily quit because of price. My co-worker has talked for years about quitting because of the price of smokes… And yet she still does, even though it’s costing her $60 a carton a week.

(ianrobo) #30

then that is her choice, you will never stop them all but if you hit the right price point you can make a significant difference. If you (as I do) accept that Sugar is as bad as alcohol, fags etc and why they have sin taxes then sugar should be.

#31

I am adamantly opposed to sin taxes of any stripe. They serve as an attempt to legislate morality, and result in a diminished sense of personal responsibility. Also the definition of “bad” is subjective and risks the tyranny of the many. I’m sure Ancel Keys would’ve loved to have a tax on bacon back in the day.

(Siobhan) #32

I disapprove of sin taxes as well. I didn’t need (or want) a sin tax on sugar to avoid it. I needed to know what it did to me, inside and out. Not only weight gain, but possibly leading me down a road to heart disease.
Now there are plenty of people who smoke and know it causes damage to them, and that’s their choice. But there are a lot of people who drink coke, or eat tons of carbs every day and DON’T realize how it damages them. I’d rather focus on the second than the first. Have people make informed decisions on their health and let them go from there.
