The Avocado Controversy

(kimhowerton) #1

An issue that comes up OVER AND OVER in Keto groups is how the heck an avocado is so Keto when it’s so high in carbs. Now, if you do net carbs the answer to that is it’s got a lot of fiber. But for those of us that count total… I have info.
Use the avocado meat weight, not the generic size… the secret is most listings are wrong. I guess the example avocados they “large” avocados were bigger than a baby’s head.

Here is a picture of a small avocado. (Large egg for comparison) The meat weight was 3 oz. That is a total of 7 g of carbs TOTAL. (1 net) If I look up nutrition for a “small avocado” it tells me there’s 12 g total carbs in a small to medium avocado…

Do you weigh food cooked or raw?

Interesting perspective.

However, using weight of avocado pulp makes it a bit easier to measure amount consumed.

I think Kim’s post agrees with you Fiorella. I believe her point was that most nutrient panels list by the whole or 1/2 and that their sizes weren’t practical compared to what we actually buy in the store.

At least that was my take on it.

@kim, I think I screwed up and misread your post as @jfricke suggested? If so, my apologies.

By the way, I really like the way you used the egg as relative size - very interesting perspective!

All I can say is I love them and eat them regularly (whole and guac) without any problem.

No problem! Yes, you and I agree  But it’s easy to misread things sometimes. No harm, no foul.

I just came here to ask about this. I got a “Protein Keto” breakfast the other day and it had avocado and without thinking i was like “oh yeah, everyone says avocado is ok on keto” so i ate it and then when i went to log it in my app i was like “FIFTEEN CARBS???” and thought i threw my whole day off. i guess i’ll eventually have to upgrade my tracking to include fiber so i know about true net carbs… because that really throws my app off when aiming for low carbs haha
