The 2 Keto Dudes Big Worldwide Restaurant Review Thread

(carl) #1

We need a place where we can give kudos to keto-friendly restaurants and raspberries to those that don’t cut it. I’m not talking ice cream shops and candy stores. Stick to restaurants that SHOULD have LCHF food but fail miserably. Use the star :star: emoji to rate it, tell your story, and include pictures! Make sure you give the name and address of the restaurant, and a link to their website if one exists.

Let the reviews begin!

I’ll start. Last night I went to a place called Kul in Copenhagen, Denmark. http://restaurantkul.dk/en

:star: :star: :star: :star:
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This place was great. In the meat-packing district of Copenhagen, it was a small-plate restaurant. They recommend 3 to 5 small plates each. I got the cauliflower soup, grilled shrimp, jamon Iberico, and we split a 600g bone-in rib eye. I stupidly didn’t take pictures.

Cauliflower Soup
Rich, smooth, thick, and buttery with florets of pickled cauli, pine nuts, some oil (truffle oil, perhaps) and a big hunk of braised pork belly on a skewer. The pork had a sticky semi-sweet sauce on it, but I ate it anyway. Delicious.

Jamon Iberico
This is my favorite incarnation (pun intended) of ham. However, what I got was a few shavings of dry lean ham covered in very tough squid deep fried in what they called a tempura batter. It was not. It was hard, crusty, and anything but light. I peeled off the breading. Thankfully it came with a tasy squid-ink aoli that rocked! The squid itself was rubbery. The chef could learn a few tips from @richard as to cooking squid.

Grilled Shrimp
These were delicious but there were only 3 of them! No complaints!

Rib Eye
This was the highlight. Bone-in. Pre-cut into slices, served with a rich bone marrow (in a half bone) that was even too rich for me. The bordelaise sauce was exquisite! I picked up the bone and knawed it down while nobody was watching.

Overall extremely tasty. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because they tempted me with the most amazing rolls, and of course - the Jamon and rubber squid.

I would go back again and again!

Hinterland (Milwaukee and Green Bay, WI, USA) http://hinterlandbeer.com

:star: :star: :star: :star: Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Contemporary American cuisine with menus created daily with fresh produce, meat, and seafood… they deliver on “… create bold flavors and uncommon pairings.”

Staff understand the menus and have graciously accommodated all request, even suggesting the chef add duck fat on top of an elk steak I was fussing may be too lean (it was amazing). The staff do not bat an eyelash when I ask for gluten-free, fattier entrées, no root or high starch veggies or sauces. They have all asked questions, talked with the chef, and delivered meals that were outstanding.

Brodo, New York City: East and West Village locations www.brodo.com

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This place does BONE BROTH!

I know, I know - how hard is it to make bone broth?

Well, as you may know, New Yorkers are notorious for not cooking - and I myself am not even ALLOWED to cook where I live, because I live with a woman who makes figure skating dresses for a living, and the fabric shouldn’t end up smelling like bacon… or so some people think.

Brodo offers 3 basic types of bone broth: chicken, gingered beef, and “hearth” (which is a mixture of chicken, turkey and beef bones / carcasses).

They’re served in fancy coffee shop type cups, and there are a variety of add-ins you can choose from to build your own broth, or choose from a particular suggested recipe. Me, I like the “Spicy Nonna” (hearth broth + chili oil and garlic puree).

Brodo also offers 30 oz frozen containers of broth to take home and reheat. (Which is what I do.)

I have only so far been to the East Village location, which is just a walk-up window, but Brodo recently opened a second location in the West Village that is roomier and where they are doing fancier, fattier additions to the broth, like grass-fed butter, marrow, and more.

If you live in New York and can’t cook, or if you’re visiting, check out Brodo to get some of that broth goodness.

Yikes…am I going to be the data nerd to ask the criteria behind 1 to 5 star ratings, to harmonize our scoring?

Sorry…I know…I’m a geek.

This is a great idea Carl. Thanks! I plan my vacations around eating so I’ll be taking notes.

LOL @Fiorella

It IS a good question!

For instance, what if only 1-2 items on a menu are keto, but they’re REALLY GOOD, while the rest of the food is “carbage”? What if the whole restaurant is trying to be paleo/keto but the results are mediocre?

I gave a 4.5 because everything I’ve eaten (@ least 10 visits) has been amazing and unique, they accommodate readily, but they are not keto/LC/carnivore focused so I couldn’t go a full 5 stars

Grand pacific hotel Lorne VIC Australia

:star::star::star::star:

This is located on the great ocean road, a very popular tourist destination.

We decided to have the squid salad and the porterhouse steak. We asked for the potato to be replaced with some green veg.

Link to menu http://www.grandpacific.com.au/data/deposit/site.document.27632.documents/Restaurant_menu_v2.pdf

The squid was amazing. Possibly the best squid I have had. It did have some chilli praline bits in it that we didn’t eat, the dressing was a little sweet.

The steak was asked to be cooked medium. It definitely wasn’t medium. More like well done. It had a Parmesan salad on top and they did a good job of subbing out the potato with green veg.

They gain points with me for the willingness to sub and change the dish to suit us. Staff were super friendly and helpful. They lost points on the cooking of the steak.

OMG!! Love, love, love Brodo!! My (hopefully soon to be ex) husband brings me home broth from there every now and then as he works in the city (it’s a 2.5 hour commute each way) and it is one of his last remaining good qualities that I will miss. Lol.

New World Bistro and Bar, Albany, NY
http://newworldbistrobar.com/

5/5*

All grass-fed beef, pastured poultry and pork, wild fish, and organic veggies from as local as possible. Amazing chefs and very happy to accommodate as needed. (Owner and head chef Ric Orlando won an episode of Chopped.) Awesome specials every day, and seasonally changing menu. I often get the roasted bone marrow, pork belly, or wild salmon on fresh Caesar salad, or one of the specials. They list next to each item if it is GF, Vegan, or dairy free, and wait staff is knowledgeable of ingredients so I can avoid things like sugar. Can’t recommend it highly enough if your ever in the area.

If you find yourself in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand or the Signature (where I stayed) you have some options.

We stayed in Tower 1 in a room with a kitchenette. The first day we went to Whole Foods and got the basics: bacon (Applegate uncured Sunday Bacon), eggs, cheese.

I went to the hot food counter in the back and got a pound of brisket with extra fat

After cooking bacon for breakfast, I crisped up slices of brisket in the bacon fat. With eggs and guacamole, that was an awesome breakfast

Now, here’s what I DON’T have a picture of. I apologize for not having pictures. I truly suck. Sorry. Still, I have to share.

Kelly and I went to Hecho, the Mexican Restaurant in the MGM Grand. We got Queso Fundido - I got mine with mushrooms and sausage. Normally you have to ask if it has flour or starch. Many places add it. Not Hecho. It’s just cheese. Melty cheese. Comes in a small cast iron pan.

I also got table-side guacamole. After that we were both full, and didn’t need an entree. Very very good.
