Thanksgiving Invitation

My husband and I have been invited for Thanksgiving Dinner. My husband is not KETO and I am struggling with the Keto way of life. I need a strategy for this event. I would appreciate any suggestions.

First, why are you eating Keto? If it’s to control Type 2 Diabetes like a lot of us. Just be straight forward and warn them you might not be able to eat most of the food. Your life is more important than a holiday. But you can comprise just enough, to taste the food and give glowing compliments :cowboy_hat_face:

If you are not diabetic, and not eating Keto for other health reasons. The just enjoy all the food. The worst that can happen is you get kicked out of Ketosis, and you need to restart. Pfft. Easy peasy! Depending how long your body has been fat adapted, you might take just a few days to get back into Ketosis. But I would fast for at least the next day.

But no matter what, don’t pig out. Take it easy. You will recover. You will probably feel worse for worrying about than the short term inconvenience you get from all those carbs.

[what I would do is this… get as much of the non carb stuff on my plate as I can. Say, half the plate. And then get small servings of all the carbs stuff. Like a teaspoon, just don’t look obvious about doing it. That way it look like you tried everything, but you only eat the stuff you want to and can smear the rest around all over your plate, and make it look like you ate tons of it😎. ]

For some of us, cheating once starts down a slippery slope. There will be plenty of keto food, fill up on meat and salad and whatever veggies look safe, if you are taking a dish, make sure it’s keto friendly, cheesy cauliflower goes over well.

I agree. I think Thanksgiving is a keto holiday in many ways. There is turkey which may be a little high on protein but hopefully there is some fat or bring small packets of fat to add. There is always some type of vegetable. If you are concerned, offer to bring something that you know you can eat.

I am not entirely sure why you are concerned? Insulting the host? Pushy family that wants you to try Aunt Irma’s baked beans? I no longer worry or care what family thinks about what I eat. Are they going to be there to give me insulin shots if this diet fails at some point?

Eat some fat at home so you are not that hungry. I guess for me while Thanksgiving was a problem on other diets, there is nothing that people make on Thanksgiving that I find any more tempting that any other day.

There are recipes on keto pumpkin pie or cheesecake. Make one and bring it

Ooo… just had a thought. If you drink coffee, bring a thermos of coffee with coconut oil and butter. You can get a lot of fat in, and wont feel hungry sitting around all those carbs.

don’t eat carbs, eat a lot of the meats and veggies. If Like Bob Johnson states, you are not diabetic, if you want for a day like this have something that is your favorite in moderation. Do this for main meal, but not all day

Thanks Dan,
I am prediabetic. Blood glucose runs around 99-110.

I’m a visual eater. I will do my best to make healthy choices for myself.
