Terrified Newbie 😮 -- 9/25/17 No More!

(Cailyn Mc Cauley) #1

UPDATE- 9/25/17- I’m on vacation in Ireland and have hit “fat-adapted” Finally! I’m a nonstop, energizer bunny and achieved:
crossing my legs for the 1st time in 7 years,
walked to the highest point in the Cliffs of Mohrer (300’ elevation climb),
went for a 1/2 pint of Guinness,
two airports and two security lines,
grocery shopping,
cooked two meals and hand washed dishes. I’m not tired, AT ALL!

Yep, I’m fat adapted all right:raised_hands:t2::open_mouth::blush:

-----original post August 2017-///

I’m scared, that’s me in the picture.

Everything else has failed me.

This seems too easy and too tasty!
3 weeks in and I still consume around 100 carbs per day from my protein shake, almond milk and veg.

I’ve had KEto rash and I think the flu. Have not weighed or measured since I started at 377 on 7/31/17.

Thanks for everyone in the community! I’ve been enjoying reading posts and getting more brave each day.

Hey, I even posted!

Congratulations on taking the first steps and I hope it turns out to be as smooth a ride as you think. But if not, just use the forum to get over the bumps. A great bunch of helpful and intelligent people out here.

I’d say cut out the protein shake and I bet you will notice more weight loss. I stay under 50 carbs a day. My fitness pal is a great free app to keep track of your macros and keep you on track. I also weigh in everyday but I understand why most don’t wanna do that.

Thanks. I’ll give it a try for a week. I’m on the Lose It app where I can plug in my desired target macros.

Thanks! I’ve been going through them a bunch. Very helpful!

Hi Cailyn, nice start, I hope you will lose the fear!
As for the carbs, you need to likely get much lower on your carbs, 20g is ideal to really get yourself into ketosis. Don’t fear the fat, plenty of fat, not too much protein (beware this is easy to overdo) and lots of salt and water, tea, coffee!
There are loads of recipes here if you need to be creative, but you can rely on butter, coconut oil, bacon and eggs, steak and burgers, some cheeses and sour cream, cream cheese and maybe some cabbage, spinach and other green leafy veggies.
Enjoy and let go of your fear, you are beginning an amazing ride!

Thanks🌟
I’ve definitely been relying on the protein and freaking out over seeing 60% of my diet (or higher) be fat.

I will drop the protein shake per the recommendation and see how it flies this week.
Cheers!

Yeah, the biggest hurdle for me at first was getting over fat phobia.

Embrace the fat, lower the carbs and you’ll feel that ketosis kicking in! Keep us posted on your progress this week. Part of this is experimenting on what works for us, so you’ve got the right attitude.

Also, yeah… it is. In a very good way!

My doctor also has me eating below 50 net per day, however, I normally stay around 25.

(Crystal Tilley) #11

Hey when i started i was eating tons of carbs i have no idea so for like 2 weeks i slowly started dropping carbs and suger and eating more clean then one day i took the plunge i started under 30 then made it a goal to stay under 20. I found striving for a gallon of water a day is very helpful. Night is the hardest for me so if i feel i will break i got to bed or find a very keto form of snack. The first month will be the oughest but you also start feeling great results physically the weight loss is great to. Eventually you can try Interval Fasting. Keep up the good work.

Sounds like too many carbs to be anywhere near ketogenic. Dive all the way in! You have got this!

Hi! You can feel good knowing that you are on a path to health and wellness! I actually think it’s kind of good to ease into keto - jumping from 300+ carbs a day to 20 carbs a day can result in major keto flu. At 3 weeks, though, you should be able to start easing down to a goal of 20 net carbs per day (total carb grams minus fiber grams). Also, be sure that you are getting enough electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, and potassium). Did you know that you need at least 2 teaspoons of salt per day once you are fully keto? You also need to supplement magnesium and be sure you are getting enough potassium through food. Avocados are a great source of potassium and fiber along with a good dose of healthy fat. The reason you need to really watch your electrolytes is that you tend not to retain water on keto, so with all the extra bathroom trips, you are flushing out most of your electrolytes.

I agree with the others that the protein shake should probably go. What I like about keto is that it focuses on fresh, whole foods rather than processed food. Do you have a list of foods that are okay, foods that you can eat in moderation, and foods to avoid completely?

Good luck and hang in there - you won’t regret it!

Welcome @Cailynq. I vascillate between obsession on intake, macros and weighing bordering on orthorexia, and “lazy keto.” One thing I’ve learned in my whopping 3 months with this WOL is that this stuff takes time and I’ll find my balance. KCKO is probably the best piece of advice I’ve consistently applied. Glad you’re here. Kiss that terror on the nose and pat its forehead. :japanese_ogre:

Thank Gatita! I am enjoying the fat a bit more each.

Just got my first 3 weeks under my belt, and fat loss is 2.4 lbs so easy and slow, which helps me to work on my psychology of eating.

Thank you everyone!

Well one of the upsides to being a newbie this day and age is the wonderful ability to find like-minded people going through the same trials and tribulations as yourself.

I’ve been doing very very well on keto, lost 80 pounds since just after Christmas 2016, feel better than I can remember feeling since I was a kid.

It’s a hard thing to wrap your head around at first, but don’t be shy to ask questions, for advice or just for a sympathetic ear because there’s bound to be someone else here that has either been through it or known someone who has.

KCKO and congratulations on starting your journey! The first steps are always the hardest.

(Cailyn Mc Cauley) #17

whew, thanks. I get obsessed about “doing it right” and then have a melt-down over the responsibility. So glad I am not the only one who vasicillates! Started the podcast yesterday and it helps a bunch. The constant reiteration of the science behind consuming the fat really helps me when I start to make “back room deals” with myself

(Cailyn Mc Cauley) #18

Agreed, after what I am learning it is too high in the carbs. So my dietician has me easing into the carb lowering so I don’t springboard. Thanks for the cheers and support!

Being determined is good, Cailyn, but we ain’t robots. Certainly not saying that “cheating” (if we even call it that) is okay, but the overall direction of our diet - and with keto it’s often toward less insulin resistance and blood sugar, and toward weight loss - trumps the errors and fluctuations we have along the way. If I’m in a charitable mood, I’ll give myself a 75% rating on being really good with keto, and perhaps fasting bumps that up to 80 or 85. So, degrees of “doing it right,” perhaps. Yet compared to doing nothing, to doing all the things that got me overweight and insulin resistant in the first place, well, ain’t no comparison.

Only three animals were harmed in the making of this post.

Thanks Doug, the percentages helps me to settle down and be human.
