Hmmm have you tried dropping dairy?
K
Absolutely. Actually, you can lose weight while barely being low carb if you just restrict your feeding time to a slim window in the day. That keeps your insulin levels low, and opens up the adipose tissues to dole out the ancient krispy kremes throughout the rest of the day.
It’s more complicated for women, starting with the monthly hormonal cycle, and also the fact that many women have restricted calories for so long that when they finally go keto their bodies respond to the solid energy intake by putting on lean muscle mass as well as by metabolizing stored fat. This can confuse your scale readings no end. We usually advise women to concentrate on what their dress size is doing, rather than on what their scale is saying.
Deb, some people suggest artificial sweetness as a culprit. I haven’t given them up yet, but switching to monk fruit soon.
K
Hey Karen. My diet is super clean and has been for almost 2 decades. I don’t use artificial sweeteners or out them in anything, and only drink water, tea and coffee. Thanks for the suggestuom though !
Oh wow your a night own , and if your body only eats one meal a day that’s fine , it’s called OMAD and this is what I do everyday . And it’s amazing how better you feel, I’m glade your going to try and give it another go. As much as I would never recommend not listening to your wife
I would have to agree just on this one occasion. And well done for the weight loss. Your doing great just listen to your body .
The main culprit in not losing weight is insulin. When I went in to Diabetes consultation (I was recently diagnosed) the nutritionist wanted me to give 5 small meals a day a try. I’m glad I didn’t. That’s a recipe for gaining weight. Your body needs a break from insulin for you to lose fat.
If you can get all your daily calories in just one meal, do that. If you can’t manage that, then think of a six hour window. Like noon to 6 pm. Only eat in that window. No snacking, nada, outside that specific window. Thisbgives your body some down time from insulin. You will begin to lose weight.
Hi, Robert! New here, just starting keto. Also a T2 diabetic (since 2010). My A1C hovers around 7.0%.
I’m curious how you can manage one meal a day without your BG numbers going wonky on you. Everything I read about diabetes indicates that going long periods of time without food will make your liver panic and take over, and will thereby send your BG numbers skyrocketing. That’s mostly been my experience, though I admit I haven’t really been on any sort of “diet” besides trying to eat low-carb. I am, though, finally coming off a long period of what I call carb denial, and it’s time to get serious. But I’m curious about diabetics doing long periods of fasting all the time…
Hidee Ho! Neighbor!
If you get that reference, you are showing your age🤠.
I suppose my BG does get wonky from time to time. But I don’t think it’s from eating just one meal a day. I think it was from too much protein.
I’ve never “measured” my macros. Not with any scientific accuracy. I just look at the nutrition label, and guesstimate how much I should eat. The problem with that is the obvious, guessing wrongly, or assuming I knew how much fat/protein was in a serving.
I learned the hard way once that too much protein can cause my BG to spike hard. One particular day, before the meal, BG was 80. One our after the meal it was 158. I about had a panic attack. I had eaten a meatloaf I had made. I used a lot of pork rinds. I always assumed they were mostly fat. These were mostly protein. I jumped on my stationary bike for an hour and brought my BG way back down. I don’t remember what it was, but I believe I posted about it here somewhere. I do remember it was a substantial amount. Back down close to 100.
I’m a newly diagnosed T2D. I had no information other than the most basic knowledge on the subject. I just realized a few weeks in that something wasn’t right with the treatment. To me, it seemed the treatment wasn’t to cure my diabetes, but to sustain it. That just rubbed me the wrong way. So I went full blown cold turkey on carbs. Turns out that worked best for me. When I get the few incidental carbs, my BG does shoot up. My insulin sensitivity is pretty bad (I assume).
[edit: my HBa1c was 11.7% back at the end of Aug 2017. Currently it’s 5.5% (7 Jan 2018)]
Two weeks after starting Keto I had lost 40 pounds (yep, that’s right, and I never get tired of mentioning it. Just look through my posts here, I mention it a lot😎.) My BG also went from being way wacky on the ADA type diet, average BG of about 200 every day (and I was measuring about 4 or 5 times a day for the first few weeks) to <100. Its a little higher now. Averaging 110 now for the past week.
I’m pretty sure a diabetic fasting is one of the best things to do. I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me that fasting is going to allow insulin to get as low as possible, and allow the body to begin healing, and reversing the efffects of diabetes. As far as I know the only problem from Diabetes I currently have was the weight gain. No vision problems, no neuropathy. Matter fact, I tested my BG a lot when fasting a few weeks ago. My lowest reading was 78 and the highest was 90ish. If that’s wonky, I’ll take it🤠.
You’ve come to a fantastic resource to help you discover what you otherwise might never hear of. Especially from the main stream medical. In my opinion, main stream medical doesn’t care to find a cure for diabetes, just developed medication to help manage it. I’m sorry, I don’t want to manage mine. I want to kick it’s ass.
Oh, you are INSPIRING, sir! And yes, I’m not sure my GP really says much more than the party line about nutrition. (Doctors aren’t necessarily nutrition experts.)
Okay, I’m going to wing it a little and just cut carbs, exercise a little (I got a COOL bike-desk combo where I can read and exercise at the same time – or check Facebook or whatever), and make sure to NOT CUT THE FAT. (That part I was already pretty good at.) Going cold turkey here, too, I think. It’s time.
Your numbers are amazing, BTW. That A1C drop is crazy! NICE WORK!
Along those lines, when I was test driving cars last year, one sport model did not even make it out of the parking lot before I told the guy to put it back, ride was too rough
I have not read all the comments so this may be said. First, when I am deep into ketosis I have trouble sleeping. Pre Keto I was a night person, I like being a night person. I would have some trouble falling asleep but once asleep could sleep as late as I wanted assuming I had no reason to get up due to obligations. Since keto, when I am in ketosis, especially fasting, I do not have trouble falling asleep and tend to want to sleep earlier but then I have trouble staying asleep or sleeping in in the morning, which does annoy me. Since I rarely otherwise have trouble staying asleep, I think this is the diet. However, when I add a little bit of carbs, such as too many nuts or berries, I find I am able to sleep in and my sleep is better. So that would be my suggestion, maybe add a serving of fruit or other healthy carb at night
Give it a chance. What is a few weeks out of the rest of your life to try something new? I never thought I could do it either but now I can’t imagine anything else.
