Tamari Almonds -- carbs legit?

(Stephen Smith) #1

Carb light nuts and seeds have become a big part of my keto diet. Great source of healthy fats that suit the keto macros. Macadamias, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, etc. But I left almonds mostly out until I found this:

At both Whole Foods and another local health food store (Rainbow Acres), 28g of bulk Tamari almonds are listed as 4 total carbs w/3 fiber (ie, net 1 carb). I find this hard to believe b/c every other type of bulk or packaged almonds are like 7 total carbs w/2 or 3 fiber. That’s lot when your targeting 20 net grams of carbs/day.

Tamari is just a soy type source on the almonds, as far as I know so this makes no sense. What’s going on here? Is it really possible the Tamari almonds are truly 1 net carb per 28g/serving??

Thanks,
Steve

If it seems to good to be true …

Maybe the packaging has non-US labelling on? In Europe our labels already minus out the fiber so the carbs shown are net carbs.

Here’s a pic. It’s a U. S. label. Seen the same specs at a couple different stores. Maybe it’s just a mistake by same manufacturer. Not sure if this pic zooms, but if so, You can see both tamari and stud almonds on either side. Tamari one net carb while regular 5 net carbs. Make no sense.

Almonds are legit. Tamari is wheat free soy sauce. Pure fermented soy juice. I don’t eat unfermented soy but the fermented stuff is not detrimental to health.

I used to do tamari almonds as a change up from marconas, which are my go to nut.

Almonds have higher protein than most of the more regularly cited keto nuts.

Serving size. Slivered almonds fit tighter into a cup.

Should be by weight, not by volume.
