Taking ketones to get into ketosis - really?

My wife came across this “ketone supplement”: https://www.perfectketo.com/product/perfect-keto-base/ while looking for a keto-friendly shake.

The description says:

  • High-quality beta hydroxybutyrate (BHB)
  • Effective at raising blood ketone levels (up to 1.5 mmol)
  • Two delicious flavors (chocolate sea salt / peach & cream)
  • Affordable and straight forward, no MLM necessary
  • Gets you into ketosis anytime, anywhere

I have only been keto 8 weeks or so, but I don’t remember hearing about “eating ketones” to get you into ketosis faster. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the science here, but I don’t think taking ketones would put you into ketosis, would it??

Exogenous ketones are a crap product, IMO. They will actually hinder you from making ketones on your own. There’s an episode of 2 Keto Dudes all about them that helped confirm what I already suspected about them.

Thanks Ashley, I figured. I’ll check that episode.

Opinions vary. Other keto personalities like Jimmy Moore, Doc Muscles, Dr Dom D’Agostino and others push the exo keto products as something great. I found Dr Peter Attia’s post interesting…

From what I’ve heard from D’Agostino and discovered in my own reading, there are times and places where exogenous ketones may be of use, e.g. Inducing ketosis in a stroke victim (I’m basing that from animal models of stroke in which ketosis was shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress), preventing oxygen toxicity during hyperbaric treatment (from D’Agostino’s work and my own experience running chambers), and other situations that would require rapid induction into ketosis where the individual had not already been using a keto diet. For the average Joe or Josie, I don’t think they offer the gains that endogenous ketones do. Sure, they might help some but if you aren’t a super athlete, you won’t notice. Like just starting guitar and buying a Martin acoustic. Sure, it’s an amazing guitar, but it’d be aaaaaaaages before its capacity is fully actualized.

Exo-Ketones may have therapeutic benefits in medical treatments especially for patients with compliance issues. For weight loss and lifelong fitness I want burn my own. Richard’s analogy of splashing sweat on yourself and running across the finish line of a race was perfect. I use MCT oil for fat and the benefits additional ketones but it’s part of a low carb lifestyle.

Emphasis in @ZackF’s post is mine because I’ll add that I’m hearing in podcasts that beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is toxic to many forms of cancer, so raising blood ketones higher could be very therapeutic.

As for that, there are several:

  • Keto Chow
  • KetoOne
  • Keto Fuel
  • Ketolent
  • Primalkind

I’ve had the first 3, haven’t tried the last 2.
