Thank you for that reply. I’m somewhat of an expert at self flagellation. But that’s another issue I have tried to work out.

Thank you!

If that’s how you’re thinking then this is hog heaven. Lots of folks here who are in the same boat. Just be prepared for cannibalism - eating bacon😂

30 days Keto is fantastic! I’m excited for you because things are about to get REALLY good

(Jennifer ) #26

Please keep us updated - I can’t wait to hear all about you kicking booty using keto as your new way of eating. Rest assured - you aren’t just trying to treat symptoms anymore (weight gain), you’re actually treating the problem (insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia).

Keto: come for the weight loss, stay for the health benefits.

Proud of you girlfriend - keep kicking butt.

Ok thx I want my mom to try Keto she’s in insulin 2 tines a day and over 55 and she can’t family exercise so I was wondering if it could still work and if it would cause trouble with her insulin intake
Any input u have is appreciated are u exercising

(Perpetua) #30

Be very careful about testing her fasting levels daily! I test anywhere from 8 to 12 times a day but I’ve always been a bit of a fanatic about keeping my numbers perfect. I have stopped taking my fast acting insulin for the most part. If I have to take any it is 2 units. My basal (Lantus) which I take 12 hours apart due to better coverage, has been reduced by more than 30% now! I also take Metformin because they say it’s good for your heart.

As for exercising, I really don’t do any. I do keep my home clean and so I vacuum, wash floors, and all the other things one does daily. I have dogs and cats. Our garden is fenced in so the dogs just get let outside to do their business and then back in. I mostly try to keep moving because when I sit too long I am in pain!

So yes, I think Keto will work for your mum. Please check on her though to make certain she watches her glucose levels. I was falling very low which can be frightening even though I was expecting it to happen.

I am 60 and need a wheelchair to get around, so little exercise. As a T2, I used to take nearly a vial of insulin a day. On a restricted calorie version of Keto:

  • I no longer use insulin or metformin or any other diabetes medication
  • My A1C dropped from 7.3 to 5.2
  • My typical blood sugar is less than 100
  • I’m no longer hungry all the time

Because of that last item, it’s the most sustainable “diet” I’ve ever been on. I’ve never lasted on any other diet for more than 6 months. Usually, the intense cravings gave way to binge eating. I’ve been on lazy Keto for three years and calorie restricted Keto for 16 months, and it’s my new WOE.

Hi
Thx so so much I’ll definitely share this with her ASAP
Happy Saturday

Can I ask how much you lost? A vial of insulin is 1000 units. I’m not sure anyone needs that much insulin a day. Did you mean a month or week even?

#36

I’ve lost over 180 pounds so far.

Whenever I was getting something to eat, I would check my blood sugar. If it was over 200, I would take two 100-unit syringes of insulin. At 160 or so, I would just do one syringe full. I was almost never under 120 (in which case I wouldn’t take any insulin).

(Perpetua) #37

That’s an impressive weight loss!!!

I’m confused about the insulin though. Sorry to seem nosy  I’m guessing you are talking about a bolus injection since you used it to correct your numbers. Is this an American insulin? Basal or bolus 200 units would be an extremely dangerous dose. Typical sliding scale, which is for people who don’t quite understand how to dose, would be 10 units of fast acting at 150 on a test.

#38

I started out with 10 units, increased to 15, then 25, …, until I got to the higher level. Both my medications and insulin dosages increased slowly over time as blood sugars would stay level for a while and then start to rise again. I always based my dosage on the blood sugar reading I would have before eating.

I used to get the cheap stuff from Walmart. I found the fast acting worked best for me.

(Perpetua) #39

So you only used a fast acting like say Novolog? I’m pretty much off of that now. But I still have to take Lantus which I do in a split dose every 12 hours. Did you ever take a basal insulin?

You are awesome! Welcome!
