Hoping to visit some friends in Sweden this year, recommendations on food appreciated.
Swedish food?
Meatballs. Game meat (we eat both moose and reindeer). LCHF/Keto has been a thing in Sweden for quite a while, and when I go back to visit, I have never had any problems finding Keto food. I have heard that pizzerias do lchf pizzas, i.e. everything but the bread. If I eat in a restaurant, I go for meat, veggies/salad and bearnaise sauce.
What about lutefisk? (He asked, innocently. . . . )
Meatballs, Wild Game, and oily fish. What more could you want? I might avoid the Wasa…
As a swede I would recommend all the fatty fish such as pickled herring, smoked mackerel and salmon (hot smoked, cold smoked, etc).
Lots of different options with meat, and it’s really easy to replace carby sides with a salad al restaurants
And if you want burgers, there is a fast food restaurant called Max, where they serve one of their burgers in salad leaves by default ( but you can order any burger there with salad leaves instead of the bun)
But regardless, keto is really easy in Sweden, just tell them you’re LCHF and ask for the adjustments to your meal
And the butter is awesome, since most of our cows by default are mostly grass-fed
I have some rollmop herring in the fridge and was going to eat with cauliflower mash, fennel and apple salad (just a tiny half apple!). Could you suggest other accompaniments, by any chance?
I’ve never had rollmop herring, but I like pickled herring with boiled eggs, steamed cauliflower and sour cream, creme fraiche or mayonnaise. Maybe som salad and radishes as well
A traditional Swedish dish is pickled herring, ‘new’ potatoes and sour cream (and boiled eggs). So I would switch out the potatoes and add a fattier option to sour cream
Thanks all, my only real worry is they live out in sticks and always complain about the food, they’ve given me a list of care package stuff they want bringning over, just assumed LCHF would be difficult.
You gotta know how to cook the “nasty” out of it and then bury it in cream.
Long ago, I used to make “Swedish cabbage” which was basically cabbage cooked with caraway seeds and then mixed with sour cream to serve. I make something similar now on keto, but fry the cabbage in butter, and then add some cream cheese as well as the sour cream to amp up the fat.
