Survivor/Naked and Afraid-type TV shows and Keto

(Laurie) #1

So I haven’t watched this show in a few years but the contestants always seemed to really get fatigued and so worn out because of the lack of food. I’m wondering if anyone has every gone on the show who was keto and didn’t mind -and even thrived- while fasting.
If I were younger and crazier, I would totally try this approach.
How about it, anyone on the forum want to start applying?

Survival TV shows

I was thinking about this the last time I watched it. How they stay hungry the whole time because they keep feeding them carbs or rice.

They should have a keto vs. SAD team!

I would so rock at Naked and Afraid

I’m keto adapted and have enough body fat to fast easily. I’d find a source of water, and some shade and just stay fasted for 21 days.

You know how they let you take one item from home - I’d take my kindle and catch up on my reading. It’d be boring TV, tho

Sign up! Think of all the camera time you would have to talk about keto.
See, that’s what I’m thinking - why has nobody that makes it on one of those shows used fasting as a strategy? I wonder if the producers keep them out to create drama and angst. I think you better go in undercover :spy:

The “naked” part, or the “afraid” part.

He’d be naked, we’d be afraid! :scream:

My boyfriend can attest that at least once during every episode I say, “This would be easy if they were fat-adapted.” I think he really appreciates it.

I guess the kindle would serve two purposes, reading material and cover up for the “naked part”.

I read an article yesterday on Twitter by Dr. Fung about one of the women (Gina) in the latest People magazine article featuring people who’ve lost half their weight. She follows Keto and fasts and they never mentioned it. I tried to find the link but it’s gone. Weird

One of the issues to consider is the fact that you’re exposed and likely working to get water and provide shelter. The energy expenditure would be much more than just a normal 21 day fast. A fat adapted person would do better in the early part of the show, but you’d still want to get some food along the way.

I’m super into wilderness survival type stuff, like do quite a bit of backpacking. I would love to go on one of these shows! I hadn’t thought of the fat adaption angle. That could be good! The only problem would be if you ended up in an area with a lot of fruit, like desert island style. I’d bring some kind of electrolyte mix for my one item.

Would be interesting to see…

I’d love to do one of those shows!
I agree that Keto could have a big impact in the beginning. It would also be situational. Priority is water. The physical demand will takes its toll on you as I doubt that your one item could be a food item. Likely it’s targeted as a survival tool. I think mine would have to be a sharp axe with a paracord wrapped grip.

Think of the vegetarian contestants who are thrown into an environment with lots of game and little vegetation, or a meat eater where the opposite is true. I’d bet if they had Keto Dude (or gal) on they’d likely put them on a tropical area with lots of fruit available to challenge the eating style!

I think the strategy would be to not let on you are keto  and hope you can get to water easily. It would be great to see a SAD vs KETO matchup. Maybe 2017 will bring a brighter spotlight on keto and some smart TV producer will pick up on the idea of showcasing it in some reality-based show kind of way.

It is gone. But I was able to read a cached version

My luck would be that they’d put me someplace that gets like 25 degrees at night and I’d freeze to death before I’d starve :joy::joy::joy:

Update.

Which size screen do you suppose would be required?

I will let richard answer that question…it’s his kindle idea.

He took the article down as Gina was getting heat from the magazine. Dr Fung didn’t want to cause Gina any trouble. Her story is on diet doctor with the name of the magazine edited out
