Survivor/Naked and Afraid-type TV shows and Keto

Her story is on dietdoctor.com with the name of the magazine edited out.

I know! AGREE! Except I would take morning sun

Just starting keto and when watching Survivor, I’ve been thinking exactly this. If you are fat adapted and then choose NOT to eat all that rice . . . you could ROCK it as far as strength/energy. You’d have to go into it undercover. If CBS knew, doubt they’d allow you on. I think Richard or Carl need to apply!!!

I was just going to start a new thread about this show with a few questions but did a search and found this thread so just bringing it back to life.

First, what is this rice you speak of? Do you mean the production crew is feeding the contestants when the cameras aren’t rolling?

Do these members go into ketosis quickly when they start their journey or would they need the adequate fat meals to go into ketosis? In other words, all that weight they lose… is that body fat or are they losing muscle and water and fat?

I don’t know, but you’ve kindled my interest. So to speak! :grinning:

I think it was Casey who talked about the rice. But I remember they usually get a sack of rice to keep them from starving. It is usually part of a challenge or something. I haven’t watched in a few years but I don’t think it’s a secret.
I’m not an expert but I’d think if they came in eating a SAD, it would take a bit to go into ketosis.

I’ve watched the show since the beginning. My understanding is that they are given a smaller bag of rice and left to forage/hunt on their own for other provisions. BUT, in rewards, they get food, but a lot of it is carbs/desserts. If one was used to IF and had enough body fat, and pushed water to keep hydrated, I think it could be done. (Don’t know if they have access to salt . . . other than ocean). Have to be savvy so people don’t catch on. That said, easy for me to say. The longest fast I’ve made thus far is 22 hrs. I’m a type 1 diabetic and still fiddling w/my insulin pump. Darn hypos keep breaking my fast. I think it is a good question/concept.

OK, maybe they give them rice on Survivor (never watched that) but Naked and Afraid there are no challenges or rewards and they show us what’s in the bag they get sent in with… never any food in there. Anyway, if I ever go in the show, I’ll be keto-ready!

Yes, on the first season of Survivor they didn’t feed them and it wrecked most of them. They had to feed them on the Africa one because they couldn’t really hunt without risk of being killed. Then they started the food rewards and eventually settled into giving them rice and maybe a chicken or two to subside.

On naked and afraid, they are only there for 21 days. No food and only one survival item per person is allowed (usually a machete and a firestarter are chosen).

And my recollection is they have constant access to clean water. So if you are used to IF, come in fat adapted and then only eat protein/fat, you could do well. But people would think you were weird for passing up the carbs. It is 39 days and I hope to see a keto person do it. I am lucky enough to have met and questioned Deena from Amazon show (season 6). They did give them malaria prophylaxis meds but they had a hard time keeping them down, and one person ended up w/malaria after the show.

On Naked & Afraid, you can predict who will do well and who will get fatigued and sick by their bodyfat % going in. I think maybe some of the participants want to look really good naked since they’ll be on TV so they lean out before the show, and then they clearly suffer greatly. Some of the participants have mentioned intentionally putting on 10-20 lbs prior to their 21 days and they do great! I remember one guy patting his visibly rounded belly and saying, proudly, ā€˜I packed my lunchbox!’

I’d do fine on N&A with the food situation but the bug bites… even covering myself in mud and ash every day only goes so far I suspect.

I’ve thought about this alsoā€¦ā€œwhy not go into ketosis a few days before the show?ā€. They seem to do everything else to prepare except maybe one of the most obvious things in my opinion. @Richard says he’d bring his Kindle, personally I would probably opt for a large bag of pink salt. But the sentiment is the same, secure a water source and chillax for 3-weeks. That sounds awesome to me!

One other thing, wouldn’t it be cool if they did a DEXA scan before and after to show the audience that these contestants are losing fat while fasting and not lean body mass like 95% of the population assumes they are? Of course we know they won’t do that because the Social Media ā€œScientificā€ community would start a war with the Discovery channel. But that happens to be something I think about every time I watch the show.

Honestly I can barely stand to watch those shows when another family member puts them on (was keeping my sick relative company after his recovery from bypass surgery this time last year and could not get him to change the channel). The idea of actually having anything to do with the production blech

The less sugar I eat (and the more garlic) the more the mosquitoes leave me alone. I was hardly bothered at all, this past summer, since I was keto.

(What The Fast?!) #36

I wish! Mosquitos love me no matter what I do or don’t eat.

(Jennifer Kleiman) #37

Mosquitoes leave me alone too but have you seen the effect of sand flies? NOPE NOPE NOPE

So I came to start a thread for this and here it is! I love Survivor! I would just love to go in fat-adapted and not eat a thing the whole time. I really think if I had water and could somehow learn how to drink the right amount of salt water not to get sick I could go the entire 39 days fasted and consume my 2000 calories a day from those Krispy Kreme’s I ate a decade ago! People would be amazed as I zipped through the challenges and their rice induced glucose comas prevented them from moving at full speed. I could also have energy to be useful around camp and donate my rations to my alliance. Fun idea and a great way to make Keto the talk to the season. Imagine Probst asking every challenge, ā€œMike, have you still not eaten?ā€ ā€œNope Jeff, and I feel fantastic.ā€

I like your thinking, there really is a keto/fasting/survival show connection to be made. It’s actually already being made just maybe without people really knowing or saying.

I forget if it was this thread it was mentioned or not but wouldn’t it be cool to see a dexa scan before and after? Watch people at home fall out of their recliners when they learn that these people who missed a few meals actually lost fat and not muscle mass? Someday…
